Palisade

➵ The Palisade Outpost

Approximately sixteen miles from busy Portland and near the approximate location of the defunct Buxton exists a thriving, and ever-growing, settlement predominantly coyote traders. The wild land has been seemingly tamed for crops or livestock, but serves largely as a trade hub and rest point for travelers throughout the area. Outsiders are treated mildly frigidly, but not unkindly, provided they do not disrupt the status quo of the duo of factions coexisting within the outpost.

Within Palisade exist two harmonious groups: the Four Families, which founded the settlement several generations back, and Del Cenere Gang members who have relocated to Palisade. Both operate with only mild overlap and Del Cenere acts and operates as its own house within Palisade, extending help where it is beneficial but otherwise adhering to their own hierarchy carried over from the Gang. Each faction, however, is under direct jurisdiction of Palisade's Proprietor.

With Del Cenere's influence, Palisade (while not having a high opinion of wolves to begin with), has grown somewhat more prejudiced about allowing wolves to stay extended periods of time.

» The Highstreet

Otherwise referred to as the mainstreet of Palisade, The Highstreet is a hard-pack, wide road lined with buildings through the center of the outpost. Throughout here is where most business is done - tradesmen of the four houses have set up spacious workshops to conduct their vocations and trade filters in and out of small shopfronts that operate solely during weekends. The Highstreet is something of a point of pride in Palisade - decorated with planters come spring and summer and kept clean throughout the winter: Outsiders are expected to act properly and with refinement on the thoroughfare and it's monitored almost as closely as it's maintained.

» The Shunpikes

The Shunpikes are more or less adopted by local vernacular for any side road spidering through Palisade's pastures or the backstreets through Palisade's Highstreet. These are quieter spots in the area - scouted regularly but otherwise less traveled than the main routes. The most notable Shunpike doglegs around the Northwest corner of Palisade's thoroughfare, where it edges a canal overlooked by a weathered watchtower, framed in palisades with woven fencing which gave the locality its name.

The watchtower most commonly houses the wards of the Courtright household, and serves as both the barracks and the area's armory. Despite the subtle sagging look of its stairs, the building has stood the test of time, and is surprisingly stable.

» Ranges

Quaint little cottages, lodges, or cabins all pepper the landscaping around Palisade, where much of the settlement's agriculture is carried out, where it's closest to Palisade's denizens when they are not at the Highstreet. What little livestock that actually lingers in Palisade stays here, further from the hustle and bustle of the main outpost in small, personal paddocks. A main hall, larger than any of the neighboring houses, sits as close to central as it can on the outskirts on the Northern side of Palisade, called the Landsmeet. It's here the Houses meet up to discuss business for the locality on a whole or settle disputes.

While uncommon, it's not unheard of for folks to conduct trade (mostly involving livestock) out of their homes in the Ranges.

The Ranges are set up by district per house: Braithwaites and their wards claim Northeastern District, Ardoix and their wards claim the Southeastern District, Courtright and their wards claim the Southwestern District, and the Northwestern District is claimed by the Winthrops and their wards. Del Cenere has its own housing division lining the south of Palisade.

2.  The Four Families

Palisade is an amalgamate of several families, each with particular skillsets and ambitions of their own, who have come together from a single common goal: manipulate the land to produce goods that can be bartered for future success. While there are smaller families scattered within and around Palisade, these four hold the most sway over their diplomatic ties and what is bred, grown, made, and traded to and from the area.

3.  Del Cenere Station Residents

Members of Del Cenere, acting partly as ambassadors, may come to Palisade in order to help bolster trade communications and train up beneath the teaching of the Four Houses at their will.

While the families operate separately from Del Cenere's hierarchy, the groups work towards mutual benefit. The Del Cenere Gang is it's own standing, unofficial house, culturally, and is exempt from having Wards. Del Ceneren individuals are expected to be respectful and unobtrusive towards Palisade's pre-existing hierarchy.
