OOC Information

Assumptions

  • Todd is frequently found hunting, cutting wood, maintaining trails, scouting, and assisting Holly in the Lancaster Stockyard. He visits the Ugly Coyote at night for food, but rarely drinks.
  • Del Cenerens can know that Todd is a transplant from Palisade and is a ward underneath Josiah Courtright.
  • Todd is not much of a talker, but he is friendly company if you can get past his intimidating aura. He will assist with tasks when asked of him.

Plot Opportunities

  • Need an awkward woodsman for your outdoor needs or social obligations? Todd is always eager to help, even if he's a little strange.
  • His raccoon companion Ringtail is something of a troublemaker. Sticking his nose into things he shouldn't and taking things he has no right to, Todd will apologetically pick up after him.
  • Todd is currently nursing a wild mare back to health. He doesn't know much about horsemanship—teach him a thing or two about a cornerstone of Del Cenere.

Introduction

Todd Langley is Las Piras of the Del Cenere Gang. He holds the occupations of Cazador (hunter) and Caballisto (horseman), and is an Apprentice of the Drunken Tusk Syndicate.

Born in the Vermont hinterlands, Todd grew in an isolation that encouraged his survivalist talents, showing promise with archery, scouting, hunting, and forestry. However, his family's seclusion notably stunted his sociability; in spite of his eagerness to form bonds, his eerie calm (masking nervousness) lends well to accidental intimidation and he often fumbles conversations with fellow canines. Alternatively, he finds companionship easy with woodland creatures, having a certain charisma with small predators and gleaning information from the unassuming beasts in exchange for food.

He struggled to find his place in his hometown of Rutland and, desiring adventure since boyhood, took to the road. He ventured to Palisade, where he settled in as a ward under the tutelage of the Courtright family to refine his skills. As he mastered his talents and picked up new ones, his sociability did not improve and he continued to stumble his way through interactions. Upon Josiah Courtright's suggestion, Todd joined the Gang to expand his horizons, gain more worldly experiences, and branch out.

Appearance

Basics

Todd, undoubtedly, is a hybrid, a physical enigma and a well-blended balance of his many parts. His coat's colors are undeniably that of a dog: a brilliant fox red, the fur sleek and brindled with rippling stripes, and a distinctive white blaze and chest. His muzzle is boxy, but proportioned into a taper similarly to a coyote's. However, the balance of his ears harkens perhaps more so towards his wolfish blood. He has a short tail that rests in a crescent sickle shape. His eyes are a pale rose-amber in coloration.

His expression is generally placid and calm, and difficult to read, making him appear much more intimidating than he really is. His broad structure and solid bulk emphasizes his imposing presence; his mongrel blood suggests hardiness and his laborious activities only build upon this. He is well-kept with hygiene, though it is not unusual to find him dirtied with earth after a long day's work, which suits him fine. His auburn mane is cut short and minimally stylized; tousled and absentmindedly pushed away of the way.

Todd is most often found in his Optime form, but frequently occupies his other forms as well. He dresses in a modest and muted fashion, leaning more on practicality than aesthetics.

  • Quirks, Gestures, Etc.: Generally still, akin to a deer caught in the headlights. He pauses his motions often when observed, or otherwise keeps his movements constrained in social situations as though to make himself less imposing.
  • Posture and Body Language: At ease when in woodlands or smaller social gatherings, but otherwise tense, rigid, and awkward. Unintentionally appears frightening or stern, despite his best efforts otherwise.
  • Scent: Earth, black currant, fir, petrichor, cut wood
  • Scars:
    • Nondescript knicks on his fingers from woodworking
  • Gear
    • Clothing: Practical wear befitting a ranger or woodsman, neutral and earthy tones; hooded cloaks, canvas shirts, linen trousers, all somewhat tattered with wear.
    • Accessories: Minimal, but predominantly things with utility; excess leather cording braided into a temporary bracelet to be utilized in trap building, kerchiefs that can be used as trailmarkers and tied to branches, flint on a necklace to start a campfire.

Personality

Basics

One of Todd's most prevailing characteristics is his quiet. A man of few words, he is reserved with his thoughts and emotions, his expression calm and subtle, often leaving others to wonder what's on his mind. He is difficult to read at the best of times, and his still and rigid posture gives off a severe and imposing aura. His silent intensity can be discomforting and mistaken for unfriendliness.

Underneath the veneer of his stoicism, Todd is a gentle and good-natured soul. His quiet belies his nervousness and anxiety; earnest and sociable in actuality, he suffers from a bit of foot-in-mouth troubles. He struggles to communicate beyond the simple exchange of information, often saying strange things in an attempt to connect with others. His ineptitude frustrates him, and when he does form friendships, he can be overbearing as a form of compensation. He falls easily into peer pressure and is eager to please, holding others' opinions of him in high regard. However, this can come into conflict with his desire to hold true to his integrity and identity.

Todd is something of a romantic; unbeknownst to most, he has a creative imagination that shies away from any limelight. He idealizes the nature of the world, hungry to see its sights and talk to its woodland inhabitants. He's quite nosy and a gossip—or at least he would be, if it weren't for his cottonmouth around canines. He tends to learn things through his quiet observation and letting people reveal information to fill in the void of conversation.

Todd isn't of the malicious sort, being rather soft-hearted; he wants to support his peers and can be quite generous with acts of service. His nurturing side especially crops up with animals, having an unintentional Disney Princess-esque affinity for them. He cannot stand for the harm of innocents.

Information Details Ringtail
by Despi
  • Nicknames: Ringo, Butterball
  • Date of Birth: 14 Jul 2021
  • Sex: Male
  • Coat: Tawny and Gray
  • Size: Slightly Overweight

Description

  • Distinctive Appearance: Only subtly more cream than the average raccoon, and definitely rounder.
  • Personality: Confident with canines, and a bit of a schmooze if beneficial. He is every bit an opportunist and perhaps a bit too comfortable with making himself at home where ever he wanders. For the most part, however, he rarely strays from Todd's side. He can be mouthy and has a bit of an attitude with strangers.

Abilities

  • High Speech: Ringtail, thanks to being largely hand-reared by Todd, can speak conversational high-speech, though at times it may be broken due to a lack of total comprehension. He speaks in the third person.
  • Thievery: As with all clever raccoons, Ringtail has sticky fingers. And, if confronted with his snatching, he has very sharp teeth.
  • Spying: Despite his husky exterior, Ringtail is very good at hiding and relaying information to Todd with surprising accuracy.

History

  • 2021:
    • Born, and separated from his litter after being knocked out of a tree in a storm
    • Found, and subsequently raised by Todd Langley

History

Prelude

Todd Langley was born alongside siblings Verity, Hamish and Edwin to parents Gethin Langley and Niamh O'Doherty just outside town limits of Rutland, Vermont, where they grew up in relative ease and comfort in the surrounding woods.

From a relatively young age, Todd was gripped with insatiable curiosity for the world around him. Much of his childhood was spent romping around his family's property sticking his nose into every hole and burrow in search of adventure. This led to many run-in’s with the local wildlife and, as a lonely boy with only pesky and annoying siblings for company, he learned how to befriend them. Todd grew familiar with woodland animals (particularly small predators like foxes, raccoons, and corvids), and discerned quickly that unassuming creatures would divulge information in exchange for offerings of food. His horizons were broadened by the broken words of his forest companions, relying on their travels and insights to color his ideals.

As he came into early adulthood, Todd shaped up to be a gifted survivalist. Independent as they were, the Langleys relied only on the land and themselves; traps and bows provided for what they needed to live in comfort, and Todd showed talent for these arts. When he was not fraternizing with animals, he attended to chores around his homestead and developed a fondness for woodcutting; simple as it was on the surface, hands-on labor and quantifiable results made Todd proud. And he was quite good at it, having a sharp and critical eye for the land.

However, thanks to a sheltered and unsocialized upbringing, Todd grew up with all the makings of a recluse. It impacted his sociability, and taking trips into Rutland as a yearling to establish himself made him aware of his oddness that his family tolerated. While eager to make companions, he struggled with it; canines were either off-put by his eerie calm (masking nervousness) or impatient with his fumbling. Often Todd was left with embarrassment and awkward silences instead of friends.

When he reached two years of age, Todd's desire to find his place was still burning and decided he wouldn't find it in Rutland. Promising to keep in touch with his family, he set out from Vermont with only a bow and the rotund raccoon Ringtail to his name. Initially he visited Portland, figuring to cast his net wide. However, he underestimated the crowds and was overwhelmed by the bustle and other worldliness. He craved the new, the exciting, but it was too much. He splintered off from the port town and ventured to Palisade, a settlement that was more his speed.

Todd managed to settled in as a ward under the tutelage of the Courtright family to refine his skills, the faction taking interest in his talents. He fell under the wing of the patriarch Josiah Courtright and the two formed an amiable but stern bond. The head of the house nurtured Todd's ability with archery, trapping, and forestry, even teaching him how to handle a short blade, and the young Langley strived to meet the man's expectations and to glean what he could from his mentor. Josiah wasn't as gentle with Todd as his family was, but that made the Courtright's praise all the more meaningful when he earned it.

After nearly a year spent with the Courtrights, Josiah suggested for Todd to expand his skillset in Del Cenere, kindly (in Josiah's roundabout and tough way) hinting that Todd should branch out more. Even as he found his place in Palisade, Todd's sociability left a lot to be desired. Perhaps spending time in New Brunswick would crack that awkward shell of his. Not wanting to disappoint his mentor, Todd agreed with the notion and organized his transplant to the Ganglands.

Miscellaneous

Triva
  • Todd’s title “Stick Season” is in reference to the song Stick Season by Noah Kahan. The hover text “time’s not what I belong to” is a lyric from the song I’m Not My Season by Fleet Foxes. I feel that both sides reflect different prominent aspects of Todd; the first song relates to his romanticism and his tendency to linger on the past, and the second song shows his desire to not be defined by what has already happened or by his circumstances. I also really enjoy how Stick Season references Vermont, which is where Todd was born and raised.
