1.  Synopsis

Sterling (stur-lehng) Howle is a young man haunted by circumstance. Armed with precious little but a survival pack on his back and a utility knife on a necklace, he set out from where he had come from, though a subsequent head injury robbed him of direction, sense, and memory - leaving him with great, gaping holes in his mind and a litany of questions and dread. He pressed onward through the wilderness, driven purely by the instinctive desire for self-preservation, and to escape whatever it was that he had left behind.

It wasn't until he was taken in by Page Whitesage, and brought to the safety of Palisade, that he was given the much-needed reprieve to heal and recover. With Page's patience, he has taken up new skills in literacy, and found himself inexplicably fond of her, and otherwise finds himself often busy as a ward beneath the Winthrop household fulfilling the niche of a handyman and stable boy.

However, while his wound has healed, and hair has taken its place and hidden whatever it was that had happened, remnants and specters still tug the threads of his consciousness, and his injury has impacted much of his ability to learn and retain information. Left with questions, and a lack of closure, his efforts to rebuild are often undercut by currents of misplaced emotion that compel him.

2.  Appearance

Basics

Sterling is undeniably, whole-heartedly dog in appearance. Thanks to the blend of breeds which comprise him, he favors a blocky, blunted build, with strong, squared shoulders and only the most mild of a tuck at his waist. He is powerfully muscled, and sinewy. His face is robust, and his muzzle a blocky shape, though thanks to some of his lither genetic make up, there is a leanness and subtle narrowing in his cheeks and snout. His ears, which would have naturally laid folded, have been cropped to remain upright, though he does not know the reason behind this. His markings, too, reflect his domesticated heritage - he is solidly black and tan, and the pattern reflects more in-line with a rich bicolor with its minimal coppery tones.

His coat is ill-equipped for extended exposure to cold weather due to its short growth.

  • Quirks, Gestures, Etc.: Deliberate and slow with his movements. Has difficulty disguising his emotions, and as such, it's plainly visible to see his thought processes play across his features.
  • Posture and Body Language: Meek. Despite his rather imposing stature, he exudes a gentle air about him.
  • Scent: What do they smell like?
  • Scars: While healed over, and covered in hair, he has an invisible scar on the back of his head. It aches in cold and rain.

    • Clothing: He owns nothing by way of clothing (yet, at least!)
    • Accessories: A survival backpack, a utility knife and sheath worn as a necklace, and a worn leather collar with a horseshoe stamped onto it.

Description

  • Distinctive Appearance: A black, clearcoated mare of Percheron grade decent. She's broad, and strong, and possesses a powerful, muscular build. Her hooves are lightly feathered, and her tail's hair is cropped shorter, belying the intentioned appearance of a disciplined workhorse.
  • Personality: Docile and easy going, while unflappably calm and confident. Difficult to spook, and is seemingly blasé, if not lazy in her approach to most things.

Abilities

  • Pull Trained: This horse has been trained to help pull carts or loads of luggage and is capable of pulling 10% in dead weight (210 lbs - 95 kg), and 150% of her body weight in cart + load (3150 lbs - 1428.8 kg).
