bNPC Quests

Summary

In June 2021, bNPC Quests were introduced. These are single-use quests allowing players to interact with specifically created board NPCs under quest-like parameters. Some quests are relatively straightforward, while others allow for a variety of options depending on how players want to approach it. Some quests may unlock or prompt certain other quests or quest lines...

Quest Claim & Fulfillment

Quests are claimed on a first come, first serve basis by PMing the administration. Only one player should PM to claim a quest, but quest threads can involve any number of played characters and their NPCs.

To count as complete:

  • A played thread MUST have a minimum of 6 posts, and an RO thread must be a minimum of 1200 words.
  • Quest threads must be started in the calendar month in which they are claimed.
  • Quest threads that are incomplete 30 days after they are started will be considered a failed quest (e.g. did not manage to do what the character asked) and the quest will be available to claim again the next month.

Quest Rewards

Most quests reward items or goods of some sort, including raw materials of a certain rarity or complex objects difficult to create from scratch.

Prompt:
While Tim can handle a surprising amount on her own, sometimes setting slabs of wood in place is a multi-person job, especially when Roadway won't help but wants everything just so. Lend a hand hauling long wooden boards and setting them in place. It'll be a full day's hard work! The pieces of wood slot together without adhesives (like Lincoln logs). What are y'all building? Roadway says "come back later if you want to know." The building is two stories and looks complicated though!

Prompt:
Dawnsong seems to be the only one concerned about Finn's disappearance and fears the worst. She thinks he may have been left on the peninsula, but hasn't gotten permission to go out and all the way around to go look (and she'd be too nervous to make that trip alone, anyway). Will someone please go look for him?

Options:
No conclusive evidence of Finn's fate can be found, but other possible clues are up to you! Is the trail totally dead? No evidence whatsoever? Or is there a sneaky scent trail that stops? Some traces of his belongings? A testimony from someone who thinks they saw him...?

bNPC(s) Appearance:
Black wispy sighthound with drooped ears; black or very dark brown eyes; iris often seems to crowd out sclera, but it's dark out, after all...

Prompt:
Sammy is trying to locate his missing twin sister "Sally" Nox, though at some point it becomes apparent that the sister's full name is Salamander. Sally is described as being identical to Sammy, easily frightened, and downright helpless. Sammy cannot seem to recall when he last saw his sister, but it "wasn't that long ago," and he insists she must be nearby, even if he can't find a scent trail. The pair have been traveling together, apparently without aim.

Or Sam's condition is actually way more serious than hiccups and he does die??? Then you can take his stuff. :V

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Sammy blends in very easily with the night and moves in a slow, languid manner, and is apparently very good at startling people, though it's unclear if it's on purpose. He speaks in a weirdly formal manner with a slow, deliberate drawl -- but he doesn't actually seem very formal. He seems to have no concept of personal space, for example, and goes off on random tangents about death and dying. Weird? He doesn't seem to be concerned that his sister could have been killed or befallen some accident though. Is this a trap? Is Sammy delusional? Is Sally even real?

Is this really the work of some supernatural being, or is there something more earthly to the strange sightings? The choice is yours!

Though he doesn't tend to come on strong to anyone, he is attracted to all genders and happy to take the lead as soon as he thinks he has a willing partner. Gray and white, with what appears to be sheepdog heritage. His shaggy hair hides his eyes.

Prompt:
Mickey has lost an item of significance among the weeds and wildflowers that grow in the old cemetery. Unfortunately for him, it's been several months and he can't remember where he hid -- err, lost -- his goods!

Options:
You don't care about helping Mickey, you just want the loot! Kill or run him off and discover what he's hiding!

Unwilling to describe exactly what was lost, Mickey just wants help finding his stuff. He'll be defensive about the whole thing.

Prompt:
Petyr is looking for a powerful sleeping draught that will help his daughter Elana sleep. He has tested many substances but none seem to work. Elana always wakes in the middle of the night screaming as if possessed. (Elana is, in fact, possessed by her late mother Katarina, who only has the strength to take partial control when Elana is asleep.)

Why Katarina is here and how you can get rid of her is up to you!

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Traveling on horseback, Petyr and Elana are both exhausted and somewhat short-tempered and impatient. They speak quickly and in punctuated sentences. Elana is insistent that nothing will work, but Petyr is insistent they should keep trying. Petyr will not pay for any medication until he sees that it works.

Tall and elegant, Darkness has a long nose, floppy ears, and a particularly luxurious collar of neck fluff, harkening back to collie heritage, but her coat is pure black and her eyes are red. She wears a modest assortment of silver jewelry and a black cloak.

Prompt:
Darkness has been having a series of increasingly disturbing dreams about natural disasters. She is seeking advice, dream interpretation, and help with anxiety and sleep paralysis.

What began as impossible memories of the red star (fallen before she was born) have evolved to include earthquakes, tsunamis, plague, and fire. She does not want to believe these are prophetic, but knows the area has had earthquakes recently and is unsure if she should begin warning people of worser dangers. Darkness is quiet and reluctant, but also desperate for advice and direction. Darkness's dreams don't need to stop, per se; she just wants some reassurance.

Haddon Castle (Male, 5 years old, dog)

bNPC(s) Appearance:
An extremely large, mostly gray dog with a white chin, throat, and tail tip. His eyes are very dark. While Haddon does not wear clothing, he carries an old kitchen butcher knife and a long length of rope.

Prompt:
A violent, cold-blooded killer, Haddon lurks in the shadows and attacks lone travelers at night, brutally killing them in a variety of ways in defense of "his territory". Most recently, a corpse has been found strung up from a tree. These actions have as of yet gone unsolved and unpunished, but the Oglethorpe Loner Band is growing wary of this threat and have asked for help in either running the stranger off or killing him.

Haddon does not speak and is very good at hiding his presence. He will attempt to use his impressive strength to subdue a target, and either stab or strangle them. It is recommended that more than one character attempt to track him down. In addition, bNPC Finn McGuff will lead the party to the killer's last known location (and confirm competition of the task).

bNPC(s) Appearance:
Large tawny hybrid with dark brown markings and short, wavy brown hair. Green eyes. Stern expression.

Prompt:
Cannonball is looking for his younger sister Trebuchet Buchanan (very pretty hybrid who looks similar to him), who's brutalized body recently washed up on a riverbank. A few of her belongings are scattered near the water across the area. Someone has to break the news to Cannonball... and also convince him that they definitely weren't the culprit!

Cannonball is well-spoken and personable, but quick to get down to business and relatively suspicious of well-meaning or overly helpful individuals. He will ask a lot of questions, prod for details, and ask for evidence. (You are welcome to make up whatever answers/evidence you wish, but no actual, specific culprit should be named or hinted at for the crime.)

bNPC(s) Appearance:
A medium-size tabby with pale yellow eyes.

Prompt:
Kempt got separated from his traveling companion, a young Luperci named Seymour, and thinks his friend may be lost or hurt. He is afraid to travel too far out of the city by himself.

Options:
An injury slowed Seymour down, and is serious enough that he requires medical attention. Patch him up or take advantage of his state to rob him for all of his goods -- this includes his traveling pack and some trail rations.

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Skittish and uncertain about strangers, Kempt is more likely to approach someone with an animal companion of their own. The tomcat believes Seymour may have headed towards Fort Cumberland.

Birkdale Crescent (Male, 5 years old, wolfdog)

bNPC(s) Appearance:
Scruffy, grayish brown, and nondescript, Birkdale's most notable features are his eyes, which are a bright blue. He has several scars and carries a large spear.

Prompt:
The heat of the summer has made things in Halifax rowdier than usual, and Birkdale is fed up with it. A small group has moved in near his home and refuses to leave -- Birkdale wants some backup to run them out of the area.

Options:
Making enemies is easier than making friends, and the gang of young Luperci may try to "even the score" by following Birkdale's helper(s) out of the city...

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Birkdale has lived in Halifax his whole life and been able to fend off most trouble on his own. This "gang of hoodlums", as he calls them, have set up camp in one of the city's large alleyways and outnumber him four to one. The group is made up of young Luperci who recently arrived in the area. They will put up resistance, though will run away if things look like they're going poorly.

Rocco (Male, 3 years old, hybrid)

bNPC(s) Appearance:
A skinny, scruffy looking Luperci with reddish brown fur and dark eyes.

Prompt:
Things haven't been going well for Rocco. After leaving his home last spring, Rocco has run into all sorts of trouble – theft and fights among them – and most recently been dumped by the lady he was courting. Despondent, Rocco has become convinced he was cursed. He is looking for any means to break this, and willing to put his faith in just about anything that might work.

Options:
Become part of Rocco's curse and see to it that misfortune befalls him during his travels! Rob him and take all of his stuff, or have something equally terrible happen. Who knows though -- maybe curses are real.

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Rocco is rather jumpy, and on the lookout for danger. He really wants to be able to "live a normal life" and blames his supposed-curse for leading to his troubles. Large groups make him nervous. Right now, he's questing for a "rare stone" that he was told would help him, but maybe your character has a better solution.

A big, snow-white wolfdog with half-pricked ears and yellow eyes.

Prompt:
A traveling herdsman, Ji-Su and his family are transporting their modest flock of a dozen sheep cross country – but a pair of their ewes has wandered off! Help Ji-Su track down the errant sheep so he can return them to the flock.

Options:
Sheep can manage to get into all sorts of trouble, from tight corners to hungry predators. If your character tries to hunt or capture the sheep through violent means, Ji-Su will take great offense to this!

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Though he tends to be gruff and short-spoken, Ji-Su is very concerned about the livestock. He considers himself their guardian, and will fiercely defend his sheep from any perceived threat.

Brownish tan mutt with wiry fur, a dark saddle, and red eyes

Prompt:
A self-proclaimed plant expert, Donovan is looking to learn more about the hybridized flora (which he calls "starflowers") through a series of experiments, but he needs guinea pig(s)! The tests are harmless probably! Who wants to volunteer???

Options:
Most experiments probably involve ingesting a specific portion of the plant prepared in a specific way (dried, cooked, mashed) and seeing what effects, if any, occur over the next few hours to a day. Details are up to you, but remember that all parts of the "starflowers" are toxic in large quantities.

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Charismatic and confident, Donovan may not fit the typical stereotype of an herbologist or medicine man, but he does seem to know his stuff! Will often interrupt himself when he catches himself rambling or going into difficult-to-understand details so's not to bore those in his company.

Very pretty tawny hybrid with dark brown markings and long, brown wavy hair tied up in a bun. Yellow-green eyes.

Prompt:
Trebuchet wants to get off the peninsula and towards Portland, but she's very bad at directions and keeps getting turned around instead. She's sure she can orient herself once she gets to Freetown though. Help her get there!

Options:
Steal from and/or brutalize her instead! In addition to the sundress, your character can also obtain several necklaces made of shiny rock and twine, and a small knife. There will be consequences however...

bNPC(s)/Other Notes:
Well-spoken and generally polite. Sometimes makes blunt observations, but quickly apologises. Seems to have had a relatively privileged upbringing, but she doesn't want to talk about her family or history, or why she's going to Portland. She's just "tired" of the peninsula. Prefers Optime form and carries both a backpack and a satchel with her personal effects.

bNPC(s) Appearance:
Similar to her sister but with longer, black hair, and gold eyes.

Prompt:
Sassafras is looking for her sister, Bluebonnet! Tell her what you know and help lead her to Oglethorpe. Sassafras landed in Portland in March and was dismayed to find that her sister and her crew had never arrived there.

Sassafras is loud, open, and has a southern accent. She isn't great at picking up subtle social cues and will ask blunt questions if she doesn't understand. Comes off as a little rude, but very genuine. Sassafras is large for a dog and faster than she looks. Can take of herself and won't take kindly to conniving types.

Prompt:
Marco is looking for his wife Matilda, who went missing after a recent quake. He's certain that she's still alive and in the area, perhaps on a newly formed island. Help him find his answers!

Options:
Matilda can be alive or dead. Maybe she abandoned him for another reason. Your choice! Marco just needs to be sure!!

Marco is solemn, serious, and a little self-deprecating. He thinks he's failed his wife in numerous ways. They've failed to have children over the years and have little in the way of family or friends. He describes Matilda as quiet and a little sickly.

A big, scarred wolfdog with black fur and dark brown eyes.

Prompt:
A man calling himself "The Ox" has set up a camp on the eastern side of a bridge that crosses the St. John river, and is using his intimidating appearance and muscle to demand payment for those who cross. After a particularly nasty encounter, a traveler has requested help in getting their goods back. Things might get physical!

The Ox will try and intimidate all who approach him. He is eager to fight, and will first attack with his thick wooden club before going in with his teeth and claws.
