Shards in the Mirror

Shards in the Mirror was a personal plot involving Kamari Kaiser and Argive Hemlock that Songbird began initial groundwork for in 2018. They pre-wrote most of the actual story from March-May 2021 before it went "live" with the first chapter on May 26th, 2021. Beginning at Chapter 5, chapters were released on Tuesdays and Thursdays-Sundays during the month of June.

Due to it being a personal plot (and in an effort to maximize the overall element of surprise), the story was limited to four players total; Songbird, Alaine, Gen, and Mel. Limitations regarding NPCs, required that the plot be primarily run off-board in LASKY to allow for the villain group to be sizable enough to carry what Songbird had in mind for the plot and its flow. The plot itself is heavy on combat/action, violence, death, and darker themes, such as torture. It was written to provide a pivotal character growth for Kamari, as well as a "redemption" arc for Argive, while also delving into his mysterious past. The plot showcases and explores weaknesses and close-to-heart matters not typically seen or expressed in the involved characters.

The plot itself resulted in the deaths of personal cNPCs, Velimir Voronin and Larunda Mellon, who had both been specifically created for the plot. Blah blah blah.

1.  Plot

Kamari’s father has mysterious men hunting him down, and Kamari decides to do what she does best: removing threats to Salsola’s people. When her long-standing mentor and friend, Velimir, is killed after taking a fatal blow meant for her though, Kamari finds her emotions compromising her judgement. A task to gather more intel puts the Thistle Kingdom’s elusive Shadow in a position she never thought she’d be in: captured.

Having lied about her intentions in an effort to keep her allies and loved ones safe from harm, Kamari finds herself alone and with dangerous company that wants answers. Too bad the Shadow is as loyal and stubborn as her eyes are blue.

But...what will it cost her?

Plot.

Kamari, Krios, O'Riley, Morrow, Argive, Duncan, and Igor returned to Salsola proper on June 18th, 2021.

2.  Characters

Main Cast
  • Kamari Kaiser, also known as the Shadow, is the Spymaster and Emissary of Salsola. Driven to protect her loved ones, Kamari makes it her mission to see to the Mireblade threat alone. She is the main protagonist.
  • Raivo Kader is the boss and leader of the Mireblades, and obsessed with a long-overdue revenge for the deaths of his older brothers, Agilmar and Jihan Kader. He is the main antagonist.
  • Argive Hemlock is one of Salsola's Arbiters, and an individual with a carefully hidden and dark past. He delves in medicine and poisons, and has a secretive business relationship with Kamari. He is also the Sponsor of Larunda. Having a close bond to Kamari, as well as previous knowledge of the Mireblades, Argive joins the Salsolan rescue party mid-way through their journey for both noble and personal reasons.
  • Krios Revlis is the Elite Scout and Striker of Salsola, and is Kamari’s husband. Still recovering from a serious injury caused back in early March, Kamari lies about her true reasons for leaving for Portland in an effort to protect him and out of fear of losing him for good. When Kamari is captured, he is part of the group that sets out for her rescue.
  • O'Riley Eternity is the Erilaz of Salsola, and is Kamari's espionage partner. When leaving for Portland, Kamari purposely omits informing him of her true intentions with the venture for multiple reasons; out of her pride and family honor, because of O'Riley having a more-recent injury, and because of her lack of information at the time. When Kamari is captured, he is part of the group that sets out for her rescue, and acts as the group's leader.
  • Morrow Larue is a member of Salsola's Family. He is a young hound who is close to and has worked under both Kamari and O'Riley. His loyalty to Kamari drives him to be brave, and his talented nose makes him a valuable member of the rescue group that sets off to find Kamari after she is captured by the Mireblades.
The Mireblades (Lackeys)

The Mireblades are a group of bandits and thieves led by Raivo Kader. They originate out of the New England region, and had sister groups led by Raivo's older brothers before their untimely demises many years past. They are comprised of individuals skilled in stealth, fighting, and thievery. They are all blade users, and all of them carry at least one knife on their person. Their emblem is a wolf skull with a knife going through it.

  • Cirino is Raivo's second-in-command. He helps run the operation of bandits, typically overseeing the men so that Raivo can focus on the bigger picture on heists. Aside from using knives, he is highly skilled with the whip; his, of which, is specially customized to cut when the cracker hits its intended target. Cirino is present for two of Kamari's interrogation sessions, and is the primary whip-user for both; he whipped Kamari 21 times total. He meets his demise at the hands of a vengeful Kamari during her escape.
  • Giannino is one of the Mireblades' better fighters. He is sent to follow and capture Velimir after Velimir escapes the Mireblades in Portland. The group initially loses Velimir, and, upon stumbling upon him on his return trek to Portland, Giannino is ambushed by Kamari and killed, but not before warning the other Mireblades that they had been found out.
  • Marcial is one of the Mireblades' better fighters. However, he is also hot-blooded, easily angered, and prone to taking things too far when fighting. He is sent to follow and capture Velimir, however, he accidentally kills Velimir during the skirmish to capture him. Knowing Raivo would be angry with him, he eagerly volunteered to aide Hayden and Tibby, who were still at large. Upon his return to the bandit's hideout, he was angered when he was told to sit out on Kamari's third interrogation session. He remedied this by trying to take matters into his own hands during a guard shift to watch Kamari, however, he met his end by her hands, and was the first Mireblade to die during her escape.
  • Willihard is one of the Mireblades' better fighters. He is sent to follow and capture Velimir, and is one of the individuals that skirmished with both Kamari and Velimir. Upon losing both of them, Willihard returned to report the unfortunate news of Velimir's demise to the Mireblade boss. During Kamari's second interrogation, he was allowed to whip Kamari 4 times in payment for Giannino's death and Willihard's close brush with it. Willihard and Nevan encountered Kamari during her escape, and gave chase before briefly fighting with her alongside Nino. When Kamari fatally wounded Nino, Willihard stayed behind to help get Nino help, only to run into O'Riley during the Salsolans' infiltration of the bandit hideout. He died as a combination of his injuries, blood loss, though, most notably, from being stabbed through the gut with O'Riley sword.
  • Shamus is one of the Mireblades' better fighters. He is also one of the greater antagonists, being present and playing an active role for all three of Kamari's interrogations, and was one of the Mireblades that went out of his way to harass and verbally, physically, and sexually assault Kamari during the times in-between and thereafter. He was tasked with collecting the "proof" of Kamari's capture. During Kamari's escape and the Salsolans' infiltration of the bandit hideout, Shamus engages in combat with Krios. He is killed when Krios bludgeons him to death with a piece of pipe.
  • Hayden is one of the Mireblades' older and more experienced members. He is sent to follow and capture Velimir, however, after loosing him, he and Tibby split up from the rest of the group to travel further northeast. They eventually find Velimir's scent again, and follow it to where it disappears behind a pack border. Tibby and Hayden end up kidnapping Larunda—who had left from those same borders—in hopes of extracting information about the pack. Hayden helped provide support during Kamari's third interrogation, and nearly discovered her when she hid during her later escape. Hayden and Heath were the first to discover the Salsolans when they infiltrated the hideout, and they both died during the fight against Duncan and Igor.
  • Tibby is one of the Mireblades' better trackers. He is sent to follow and capture Velimir, however, after loosing him, he and Hayden split up from the rest of the group to travel further northeast. They eventually find Velimir's scent again, and follow it to where it disappears behind a pack border. Tibby and Hayden end up kidnapping Larunda—who had left from those same borders—in hopes of extracting information about the pack. Tibby helped provide support during Kamari's third interrogation, was tasked with collecting the "proof" of Kamari's capture, before he was eventually given orders to deliver a ransom note to Salsola. On his way to Salsola, he was confronted by the Salsolan rescue party just outside Freetown, where he was questioned before eventually being killed and tossed off a bridge.
  • Nevan is one of the Mireblades' newer members. Nevan is the one to initially discover Kamari's presence at the hideout, and is part of the group thereafter that ambush and capture her. Willihard and Nevan encountered Kamari during her escape, and gave chase before briefly fighting with her alongside Nino. When Kamari fatally wounded Nino, Nevan was tasked with pursuing her, only to lose her within the building. When he finally catches up with her again, Kamari had already escaped the building, and Nevan was tasked, again, to pursue her. He manages to catch up to Kamari when she makes a critical mistake, and engages in a fight with her that ends with Kamari escaping a third time, and Nevan being left with a lame leg. Determined to not come back empty-handed, Nevan searches for Kamari into the following day, where he is found by the Salsolan rescue party. After confirming that he has no information on Kamari, the party allows him to "flee." He is killed when Krios puts three arrows into his back.
  • Heath acts as the group's medic when not in the thick of things. He tended to Willihard's wounds on the first night of Kamari's capture, and tended to Marcial's when he, later, returned to base as well. He worked alongside Shamus during Kamari's first and second interrogation. Hayden and Heath were the first to discover the Salsolans when they infiltrated the hideout, and they both died during the fight against Duncan and Igor.
  • Nino is one of the Mireblades' younger members. He was present during Kamari's third interrogation, and worked alongside Shamus. During her escape, he encountered Kamari while she was running from Willihard and Nevan. In the brief fight that followed, he was fatally injured when Kamari stabbed him three times in the stomach before he was, later, finished off by O'Riley when he and Willihard ran into the infiltrating Salsolans.
Supporting Cast
  • Velimir Voronin is a Warden of Salsola. He is Kamari's old mentor and long-standing friend. He acts as an advisor and voice of reason for Kamari. After taking a knife that was meant for her, Velimir was later killed by accident by Mireblade Marcial.
  • Larunda Mellon is a merchant and Associate of Salsola. She is the upbeat, talented ward of Argive. When she wandered outside of the Kingdom's territory to gather herbs, she was kidnapped by Mireblades Hayden and Tibby. She was taken back to the bandit's base, where she was eventually brought before an injured Kamari. Using her compassion against her, Raivo extracted vital information about Salsola and Kamari herself. When angered by an act of defiance by Kamari, Raivo swiftly and suddenly killed Larunda with a well-aimed, thrown knife.
  • Mirko Morandi is a boy Kamari rescued in Portland nearly two months before the events of Shards in the Mirror. In a case of being in the right place at the right time, he happens upon Kamari (who he knows as "Kaid") clinging to a rock in the aftermath of her drastic escape from the Mireblades. Remembering her kindness and indebted to her, Mirko rescues her and keeps her hidden when he discovers "bad men" (Mireblades) are looking for her. When he discovers Argive trying to take Kamari away, he confronts him, and follows him and the Salsolans back to Portland to ensure they are, in fact, allies of Kamari. Once in Portland, however, he is barred from accompanying the group to Fort Preble.
  • Heine Kaiser is Kamari's father that lives in Salsola's Portland location, Fort Preble. In his previous life as a slave, Heine's master, Jihan Kader, was killed by two Salsolans. His life changed for the better under the new ownership of Salsolan, Bane D'Angelo, and he never thought to look back. Six years later, he didn't expect his past to come back to haunt him in the form of a vengeful Raivo Kader. He is largely absent from the story, though, makes a brief appearance at the very end, where he apologizes and expresses a terrible guilt for what happened to Kamari because of him.
  • Igor Kotovo is a Warden of Salsola. He is a cousin of O'Riley, and a close ally to him as well. Known best for his rotund build, Igor is not the fastest Luperci. However, what he lacks in speed, he makes up for in the use of his homemade mace. When Kamari is captured, he is part of the group that sets out for her rescue.
  • Duncan de le Poer is a Confidant of Salsola. He is one of the Kingdom's main guards that man the Garrison, and noticed suspicious activities early on. His veteran experience and fighting prowess made him an ideal, last-minute candidate to join the Salsolan rescue party as they made their way out of the Kingdom's territory. His primary weapon is a spear, however, he is also talented in archery and horsemanship.

4.  Trivia

  • The main story of Shards in the Mirror had 72,287 words that were written by Songbird alone.
  • When Velimir Voronin was brought on-board as Kamari's cNPC in 2018, his death had already been roughly planned out. He had been intended to play the typical "mentor" role, and his death was supposed to be a tragic, character-growth moment for Kamari. Initially, he had been slotted to die with the introduction of CHARACTER in 2019, who was actually supposed to play the role as the plot's main villain. Many aspects of [YO] were created and written with this in mind. [REASONS FOR NAMES AND CONCEPT DESIGNS]. Storyboard issues and conflictions, along with Songbird growing to like [YO], led to the plot being put on hold until Songbird could come up with a likeable story that could still make use of everything they'd set up for leading up to that point. The plot was revisited again in late 2020 before finally taking a stronger form in January 2021. By March 2021, the first chapters of Shards in the Mirror had already been underway, and additional, pre-written chapters continued until the plot's launch in late-May 2021.
  • For those that were counting, Kamari received a total of 25 lashes.
