Darla Drakenfur

This poorly aged building sits in a forest clearing at the base of the Mount Oromocto, at such an angle that if one walked out the door, turned left and went straight southeast, they would inevitably arrive at the Grand Lake. The House is square, of a single story and was once white, but the years left it a dull grey with patches of sickly yellow. It has no glass in its four windows, instead, roughly cut, uneven boards cover them and protect the inhabitants from the elements. At night, if they hadn't been covered by skin curtains, one can see candlelight poking trough the sizeable gaps between the boards, and it is a way to tempt travelers into approaching. A chestnut tree grows by the House's southern wall, leaning slightly over it in an almost protective manner, and in October its nuts pellet the roof and scatter along the ground. In the vicinity is a shoddily made pen, where a single, underweight brown cow can be observed grazing. At the back of the house is a small garden marked by a "fence" of rocks, where a variety of pungent plants grows with little tending from the resident witch.

The house's only door, creaky, heavy and luperci-made, is marked with an X in ash. A ruined bear skull is nailed above the doorframe. The interior of the House-in-the-woods is in heavy darkness even during brightest days. A new canine arrival would be overwhelmed by the stench of stale air, dust, candlesmoke, unclean fur, chickens and their excrements. To the left from the entrance are seldom-washed counters of what was once a kitchen and is still used for such purposes, although the sink is packed with dirt out of which something green has begun to sprout. Between the north side windows is a makeshift altar to an unknown deity, adorned with offerings. Into the back wall and slightly to the left is a fireplace, and off the mantel board hang pots and pans. In the southeast corner is the living place of the Witch-in-the-woods, a pile of mattress, cushions, furs and blankets, from which most of the odor emanates. The Witch's great, static form can be found there at almost all times. The walls are full of shelves of hanged items, and five lean chickens amble around the place.
