Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, Switchback is a small community of like-minded livestock herders and craftsmen that carve out a living on their own. They operate a basic trading post and hospitality for any travelers that happen to pass by. Their lifestyles are similar to human pioneer settlers from a couple hundred years ago: simple and self-sufficient, as long as one puts in the hard work.

Switchback is populated primarily by dogs, with some very minor coyote influence. One family in particular has mixed coyote blood, but still low-content. There is a coyote prejudice amongst the people of Switchback but is not based in anything aggressive, it's simply a remnant of instincts bred into them by humans that they haven't been able to shake.

1.  Essentials

1.1  Geography & Climate

Mountainous and forested, the land had long been cleared out for farmland by humans. Local families kept it maintained for a few generations before Switchback was officially formed and settled. Large fields of grass and low mountain shrubs populate the hilly area, dotted with repurposed wooden structures that house the various families and their livestock.

Summers are mild and humid, and winters are cold and snowy. Snowfall begins the middle of autumn, and general precipitation is year-round save for occasional dry spells. There are almost always plenty of resources and prey to go around.

2.  Culture

The folks of Switchback are self-sufficient, family-oriented, and loyal.

They prioritize hard work over worldly knowledge. Most are illiterate, but their survival, basic crafting, and animal handling skills are unmatched.

Generally, they are lightly humanized and go on four legs just as much as two. It's easier to herd animals and hunt on four legs, after all.

The Pastor family in particular has a prejudice against coyotes that's primarily perpetuated by the older members. There is no real basis for it other than it's in their blood; their mix of breeds were created by humans to protect livestock from coyotes.
