1.  Description

A "brightly-colored orchid that has one or sometimes two blossoms on a single stem. White petals sit on top of a white pouch (slipper) streaked with pink. Hairy oval leaves clasp the stem." [1]

It flowers in early to midsummer, usually with 1 to 2 flowers per stalk, less commonly 3 or 4.

1.1  Growth

Terrestrial temperate growth -- prefers wet lands, open wooded swamps, with Tamarack? and Black Spruce?. It has proven to be a difficult plant to cultivate, due to their natural growing habits.

2.  Obtainment

Very Rare. Although never common, this rare plant has vanished from much of its historical range due to habitat loss.

  • Attractive fodder for white-tailed deer.
  • The Cypripedium species has been used in native remedies for dermatitis, tooth aches, anxiety, headaches, as an antispasmodic, stimulant and sedative, depression.
