Griffin Winsor was the Captain of the trade ship The Dancing Courtesan. Prior to meeting Tiamat Amaranthe, he was the first mate under his father, Declan Winsor, of the same vessel. He left his ship in the hands of his capable second and joined Tiamat in her journey in 2018, and has been landlocked ever since.

After some bouncing around here and there (at one point, he was a member of the the Troupe), Griffin eventually returned to Portland, where he was reunited with Tiamat. He and Tiamat took up residence in an old home on the outskirts of Portland in late 2019, where he would spend his days fishing at the river, playing cards with area friends, and pushing Tiamat's buttons. The following summer, they had three children: Landon, Owen, and Rosemary.

After the disappearance of his mate mid-winter of 2020-2021, Griffin was left the sole caretaker of his kids. He fell into a depressive spiral and relied on the help of old friend Rahab de le Poer and his neighbor, the elderly Simo (a Finnish immigrant), to take care of him and his family. In order to make ends meet, he went into debt with some unsavory Portland types. His children subsequently became embroiled in a conflict with these debt-collectors and con men, and the fallout resulted in the death of their neighbor Simo. Despite his best efforts, the children left shortly thereafter.

Tiamat was returned badly wounded at the end of summer 2021, brought home by her brother Lotan, Pazuzu Lykoi, and Rahab de le Poer. At present, Griffin remains with her and is assisting with her recovery. As far as she knows, the kids are "helping Simo move up north" and will return.

1.  Personality

1.1  Overview

Summary

Griffin is a reformed jerk. Arrogant, flippant, and coarse by nature, with age and experience he has mellowed into a better friend and listener. Not one to hold reservations, Griffin speaks honestly despite the consequences, although he has better learned how to deliver the truth so that it doesn't hurt too bad. At his best, he has a good sense of humor and something like a moral compass, however much he must fight a lifetime of bad habits. Of these, the most apparent are his alcoholism and chain-smoking, symptoms that mask the underlying issues of his destructive self-loathing and weak willpower. He is like most others, which is to say, he's trying his best with the cards he's been dealt.

Traits

  • Demeanor: Laid-back, sarcastic, observant
  • Speech: Mostly swears and a noticeable lack of formality
  • Scent: Woodsmoke, sea, Tiamat
  • Outlook: Pessimistic
  • Alignment: True Neutral
Concerned with their own well-being and that of their group
Remains nonjudgmental and uncommitted to any moral, legal, or philosophical system
Will keep their word if in their best interest

1.2  Detail

Interests

  • Likes: Sea, ships, sailing, fishing, napping, gambling, drinking, smoking, cooking, Tiamat
  • Dislikes: Cardio, storms at sea, winter

Biases

Griffin doesn't care enough about most things to be biased for or against them. As long as it's not bothering him, his mate, or their friends, he doesn't see a point in trying to form an opinion about it. His reaction to most people being overly concerned or nosy is get a life.

Motivations & Fears

Griffin is motivated by his fears, which are many. Most of them used to revolve around becoming like his father, giving in to his worst impulses, and hurting the ones he loves (and thus losing them). Now they revolve around his children, and giving them the right kind of life they deserve.

Sexuality

Griffin is mostly heterosexual, but to be honest, if an attractive guy tried to kiss him, who is he to say no? He thinks it'd probably be fun. Used to being noncommittal because he was afraid of becoming his father, Griffin was greatly surprised when he fell in love. He is drawn to women who can kick his ass and challenge him to grow.

Substances

Griffin has done pretty much everything under the sun. He struggles with his addiction to alcohol and smoking, but he thinks as long as he keeps it under control it'll be ok. Yikes.

Spirituality

Griffin isn't religious, and he doesn't care if anyone else is religious either. He is superstitious, however. Who knows what's out there? He sure doesn't.

2.  Appearance

2.1  Basics

Overview

Griffin has a casual, relaxed air that would not separate him in a crowd. At a glance he seems self-assured and unconcerned with how others perceive him, but whether that's due to confidence or depression is hard to say.

  • Structure & Fur
Once trim and hardy, he has softened a lot in places (namely, his stomach). He very much has a dad-bod. At one point he had very defined arm musculature, although now it's only evident when he exerts himself. His coat is short and sleek, and seems to protect him well from water. His short hair is dark and shaggy, and has an effortless bedhead appeal
  • Humanization
Born and raised on a boat, Griffin has a high degree of humanization and is very dexterous with his hands and feet. He is comfortable wearing clothing and using tools.
  • Modifications
While he has plenty of scars around his arms and legs, a notable scar is one on his right palm.

3.  Relationships

3.1  Family

Immediate Family (Winsor)

Relationships

Parents

  • Griffin's father Declan was the infamous Captain of the ship, the Dancing Courtesan, and was both a well known sailor and abuser. With his mother Luciana dying shortly after giving birth, Griffin was the main target of his father's abuse for the entirety of his young life, leading him to eventually plot a mutiny against his father. It was Tiamat who ended up providing that moment for him, however at the cost of her trust. Griffin presumes his father is dead, and feels no guilt or shame about that.

Siblings

  • Griffin was the only one of his litter to survive. He knows he has half-siblings through his father's side, but their names and status are completely unknown to him. He doesn't really care to seek them out.

3.2  Relationships

Family Relationships

Landon, Rosemary, Owen

  • Griffin loves his children to the moon and back. Equal parts terrified and proud, he wanted to give them everything he could. Unfortunately, this turned out to be not much. Everything spiraled out of control in the winter of 2020-2021 when Tiamat disappeared, leaving Griffin as the sole parent. Griffin was unable to fight his depression and be there for them in the ways that mattered, leading to their detachment and eventual parting of ways. The children are his greatest accomplishment and greatest failure, and while it seems that his mistakes may be irredeemable, he plans to seek them out and make it up to them as soon as Tiamat recovers.

Tiamat

  • The love of his life and the bane of his existence, Tiamat stole his heart when they met on his father's ship in 2017. More here when I feel like writing.

4.  Residence

Location

Portland

Occupants

Griffin, Tiamat

Description

Following her return from Erie, Tiamat settled into the ruins of a stone church. Most of the area has been reclaimed by the wilderness, providing ample shade during the summer months and plenty of seclusion from curious travelers. It is uphill from a small river and the field and stable of a local farmer, with whom she has an arrangement to keep her horse.

The structure lacks a roof but is otherwise sound. Tiamat has amended this by fastening wood and canvas taken from an old ship sail over the gaping ceiling. It remains drafty and needs constant maintenance, but this solution keeps the snow off during the winter. Additionally, the gaps allow the smoke from the fire to escape. Over the doorway and windows are a patchwork of deer and various animal pelts. Around the corner is a small overhang covering firewood, a chopping block, and a rope used to hang dressed kills.

The interior consists of a bed of pelts and packed hay (and when the season allows, flowers and soft grasses), a lop-sided wooden table, a stone hearth where a fire is kept going, and antler hangers from which various clothes, belts, and other accoutrements are stored. There are flowers growing from the walls, filling the home with a naturally perfumed air. A large patterned textile hangs over the back entrance, one of the few remaining keepsakes from Tiamat's time in Bedaya. The space itself is not very large, accommodating around four to five others, but the high "ceiling" makes it feel bigger.

Tiamat doesn't keep a tidy house and will leave her belongings scattered all around (much to Griffin's chagrin). Despite this, she never seems to lose anything and claims to "know where everything is."

5.  History

5.1  Summary

Griffin was born to Captain Declan Winsor and Luciana in the summer of 2105, on his father's ship the Dancing Courtesan. His mother died when he was young, an experience Griffin can't recall at all. He lived most of his life aboard the boat learning from his father, an experience most would consider a privilege as Declan is said to be one of the best sailors in the Atlantic. However, his exploitative and abusive nature made Griffin contemptuous of him.

Despite the abuse of his father, Griffin had a lot of other male role models on the ship. He grew close to the crew, who helped to fill in where his father fell short, and it was their influence that allowed Griffin to look back on his childhood with any fondness. As the crew was of different species and backgrounds, Griffin enjoyed learning about their rituals and cultures, and they would take him inland whenever they made port at one of their homes.

Griffin was well on his way to becoming a skilled sailor in his own right by the time he reached adulthood. He got into plenty of trouble when they made port, as one does as a youthful scamp, and these experiences mostly taught him how to lie and cheat and steal.

When he was a year old, Griffin met a woman named Mina Hark while his ship was at port in Pointe-Noire. She was then the first mate of the ship the Albatross, which was undergoing repairs, and had been living there for some time. Although she was committed to another, they had a torrid affair. When Griffin tried to break it off, she told her lover of the affair which led to Griffin getting his ass kicked. They met again a month later in Lisbon, and then Dublin, and then Algiers, repeating this type of pattern until Mina put an end to it when she became Captain.

Everything changed for Griffin when he encountered a strange young passenger in January of 2017. Initially, he meant only to humor her furtive antics (and lied about his identity to see what she might tell him), but soon became infatuated with her wide-eyed idealism and desire for justice. When she insisted on helping him take the Captaincy in exchange for his help freeing her godmother, Griffin agreed. He thought this could be his moment to finally overthrow his terrible father.
