One of many orphans adopted into the Whiteheart family, Gilmore is one of few remaining after the majority of the family was brought down from the inside. Suffering misfortune after misfortune, Gilmore eventually decided to start completely anew, and figure out how to live without the people he leaned upon, and the damage he carries.

When Gilmore was a year old, a severe ear infection caused him to lose his sense of hearing. Although he has recovered from the worst of the infection, parts of it still remain to cause his ears soreness and causes the skin in his ears to scab frequently.

1.  Appearance

1.1  Basics

Essentials

  • Species: Gilmore takes much from his Dog heritage, especially in the texture of his fur and its colours. However it clear that Gilmore carries some wolf heritage in the structure of his face, ears and body.
  • Fur: Gilmore has a thick coat of wavy fur, made up of loosely packed curls all over the wolfdog's body. His curly fur is most prominent around his neck, body, tail and upper parts of his legs. His head and lower legs have shorter, less wavy fur however.
    • Optime Hair: Gilmore has a short mop of curly hair in his Optime form, with the rest of his curly mane cut away.
  • Facial Features: Gilmore has a wolf-like face, with a pointed muzzle and fairly large, inverted V shaped ears.
  • Build and Size: Gilmore certainly rests on the small side. His thick and curly coat hides a small and meek body that hasn't seen much work, and thanks to his dog heritage he lacks the typical height of a wolf.
    • Lupus: Essentially made of fluff, Gilmore seems much larger than he is in his Lupus and Secui forms.
    • Optime: As his body stretches out, more of Gilmore's small frame is revealed, covered by a thinner layer of his curly coat.

Adornments

Gilmore is as well kept as a boy can be when he spends his days on the road. Smudges of dirt cover his clothes, but he keeps them in good condition, fixing and wears and tears, especially on his green cloak. He likes to wear his green cloak, along with a white shirt and simple, elasticated trousers, with a large leather satchel over his shoulder. Gilmore keeps simple in his clothes, and doesn't care for extravagant fashion. In Gilmore's eyes, he'd rather wear something that is personal to him.

Gilmore uses his Optime form most often. It is the most practical when travelling with all his items and, due to his love of reading, allows him to easily hold and read.

Interaction

  • Speech: Gilmore has an honest and friendly tone. He can stumble over his words on occasion, and has a lot of difficulty pronouncing words he doesn't already know. He doesn't like to let his condition stop him from talking.
  • Scent: Ink, fresh grass, mint, close up Gilmore smells of infection especially around his ears.
  • Quirks, Gestures, Etc.: Gestures a lot with his hands, tends to stare a lot though not out of offence but merely so he can focus on another's body language and signals, smiles a lot.

OPTIMISTIC, FRIENDLY, OUTGOING

Gilmore has always been a positive soul, even when life seemed impossible to enjoy, Gilmore remained somewhat hopeful and optimistic about life. He doesn't let the fact that he lives in a silent world stop him from trying out everything, and even when Gilmore fails he tries his hardest to improve and get better. He's willing to help others in anyway that he can, and isn't against leaving others alone if he thinks he might start to become a liability on them. Gilmore takes no offence when others don't want to talk with him because he can't understand their speech, he does well to put himself in the metaphorical shoes of others and accepts their reasons for leaving the boy alone. That being said, Gilmore is thrilled to make friends, especially those willing to be patient with him.

DAYDREAMER, HONEST, BRAVE

Gilmore has a big imagination, that gets bigger with every book he reads or day he spends daydreaming. Gilmore's imagination is so strong that it helps him cope with a lot of things. The act of pretending to be something different than what is real helps Gilmore act like a brave hero, even when he's scared. It becomes far easier to accept his own little world of wonder when he can't fully focus on the real world. It's not like anyone can tell Gilmore his imaginary world is wrong, after all. One thing Gilmore finds hard to do is lie, he's very honest, and believes the truth always helps the outcome. However, that doesn't mean he's against adding a flavour of creativity to the truth, to bend it to fit a certain need.

SMART, APOLOGETIC, CAREFUL

An issue Gilmore faces is others than don't understand that he's deaf, not stupid. Many who talk to Gilmore notice his lack of understanding and think that he must not be of the right mind. Usually Gilmore leaves those people be, or tries to prove to them that he's smarter than he seems to be. Gilmore's vocabulary is rather extensive, although new words he learns aren't always pronounced quite right, anything written down is understood. Gilmore can read in three different languages, he knows he's clever, it's just a matter of proving it to others. Gilmore's not all about proving himself though, he takes care in interacting with others, and apologises for the inconvenience he causes them. Having almost died to an infection that was passed off as being nothing dangerous, Gilmore takes care in everything he does. He keeps his coat clean and especially clears out his ears as often as possible. He also travels with his eyes and nose working constantly, unable to help but think of what might be sneaking up on him.

He's a shy romantic, wishing to win over someone he loves by caring for them and proving that he deserves to love them rather than try and force anything.

Because of his incredibly open and creative mind, Gilmore believes in a range of higher powers. He's open to listen to how others choose to believe, and is never one to reject a belief or find it impossible to follow. He strongly believes in spirits and luck, and believes that he must have been cursed with a spirit of misfortune as a pup.

4.  Skills and Inventory

4.1  Abilities

Reading and Writing

  • Education and Learning: Gilmore was too young and traumatised to remember the short period of learning he received in his first home. But upon being brought into Whiteheart and showing his love of the written world, he was found a suitable teacher in Portland who was more than happy to teach Gilmore everything they could on reading and writing and anything else about the world of paper.
  • Reading (Master): Gilmore can happily spend days reading a single book in one sitting. If the story is good enough he'll most likely be lost in the pages. He can read rather fast and still take in all the information he needs to understand the content of a book. He understands English fluently, and has a good understanding on French and German text.
  • Writing (Master): Gilmore can write fluently in English and partly in French and German.
  • Sketching and Drawing (Journeyman): He's no master in Art but Gilmore does find joy in sketching landscapes of pictures of the fictional characters or creatures he makes up in his head, or ones he'd read about in his books.
  • Gilmore is easily lost to his love of the fictional world. Books can steal his attention very quickly, and due to his disability it can be hard to regain his attention without physically removing the book from his sight.

Combat

  • Education and Learning: Due to the adventurous nature of the Whiteheart group, it was in everyone's interest to at least know the basics of using weapons or knowing how to defend oneself from harm. Gilmore has the mindset and physique of a pacifist, and hated learning to do harm to others. He did find enough interest in a bow to at least be motivated to improve upon that skill. Or perhaps Gilmore just liked the idea of using a bow because it was the favoured weapon of one of his favourite fictional characters.
  • Archery (Journeyman): One of the only weapons Gilmore cared to learn how to use, he enjoys hunting with his bow. His ability in archery is slowly improving as he is forced to hunt for himself.
  • Hand to Hand (Novice): Gilmore doesn't like hitting things, even when defending himself. He reluctantly knows a few tricks about how to fight with his teeth and claws, but certainly not much.
  • Daggers (Novice): Another weapon that feels wrong to use, Gilmore knows a few manoeuvres with a dagger, and how to properly throw one, but nothing more.
  • Gilmore isn't a physically strong individual, and tends to shy away from fights fairly quickly. He can fight well from a distance, but typically that only happens during a hunt.

Survival

  • Education and Learning: Living on the outskirts of a popular trading city, Gilmore was taught a few things about survival, either by his family in Whiteheart, or by friendly traders willing to share a trick or two on how to get around. Of course, many of the skills Gilmore picked up were quickly handicapped by his deafness, although needless to say Gilmore tries his best to work around his condition.
  • Hunting (Apprentice): Gilmore used to be a great hunter. He would pretend to be inside of one of his favourite stories and use it to guide him and help him track, relying on all senses to find prey. But with his loss of hearing, locating prey has become harder. Although Gilmore is beginning to learn to rely heavily on tracking scents, and feeling for movement on the ground as he hunts.
  • Medical/Herbal Knowledge (Journeyman): During his time stuck inside suffering from severe infections, Gilmore learnt a lot from his carer, from what they were willing to teach the boy. Gilmore has memorised the looks, smells and functions of particular herbs from a medical stand point, and can treat simple wounds or broken bones. He has almost expert knowledge on infected ears, after realising in the worst way possible just how dangerous they can be.
  • Navigation (Novice): Gilmore was never the decision maker of his family, he relied heavily on the older ones to decide directions. He can vaguely follow directions or locate suitable paths.
  • Being deaf makes it harder to do the essential things needed to survive alone. Although Gilmore is gradually learning how to cope, he is still young and untrained in most things. Thankfully his positive attitude helps to fight the worries and fears that come with trying to survive.

4.2  Inventory

Trade

Gilmore knows a little bit about trade. His family made deals often, but Gilmore didn't typically take part. Most of his items are sentimental, and Gilmore couldn't even begin to think of parting with them. Things he finds on his travels are open to be traded however, and Gilmore doesn't have much he'd ask for in return other than his favourite things.

Items

Book Collection

  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Gilmore's prized possession and favourite books. They have a lot of wear and tear, and a few pages have sustained too much damage to be read, but they have aged surprisingly well, and Gilmore takes great care with them.
  • The Catcher in the Rye: The book remains in good condition apart from a small segment missing, seemingly ripped out at some stage of the books life.
  • Lord of the Flies: Fairly good condition, there seems to be a lot of stains on the pages from either wine or blood, but Gilmore believes they just add to the book's history.
  • Prince Caspian: Missing quite a few pages and hasn't aged as well as other books, less of a coherent story and more just collections of scenes that can be put together by someone with a good enough imagination.
  • Where the Wild Things Are: Fairly good quality, some pages are torn or missing but the book as a whole is fairly well kept.
  • A Wizard of Earthsea: Good quality, some pages have faded but is mostly readable.
  • The Last Unicorn: The pages of the book are coming out, but is otherwise in a fairly good condition.
  • Dragonflight: Segments of the book are missing, but it is in good condition otherwise, and makes a good read despite being impossible to finish.
  • Spare papers: Gilmore has stuffed as much spare pieces of paper as possible into his bag, some are still attached to old notebooks, whilst others are just crumpled up.

Clothes and Other items

  • Clothes: Gilmore doesn't own much, only what he wears. He has a white shirt that isn't kept very clean, simply because of how much time Gilmore spends lying on the ground reading. He also wears dark trousers, and his favourite item of clothing, a deep green cloak given to him from one of his older brothers, Thorn. He also wears a small silver necklace with a heart shape on the end, another gift from his family.
  • Bags: Gilmore has two bags he uses when travelling to hold his books and items. He has a small leather back that hangs over his shoulder, which usually contains a few jars and whatever food Gilmore keeps on him. He also has a large leather satchel to carry all his books and other precious items in.
  • Other items: Gilmore keeps a few jars on him to store herbs he might find when travelling, or anything else he might need to store safely. He also has various charcoal pencils, a single ink well and quiver, and some candles.

Weapons

  • Bow and arrows: Gilmore has a rather special bow, the second gift his older brother, Thorn gave him. The older man said the bow had been passed through his family for generations, and now belonged to Gilmore. It comes with a small quiver with a few arrows that Gilmore uses sparingly since he isn't very skilled in mamaking more.
  • A dagger: Gilmore keeps a simple dagger in the front pouch of his satchel, to be used to carve meat or in emergencies.

Gilmore was born to a small family struggling to survive in Freetown. The recent destruction caused by the falling star made life hard, but they stubbornly chose to remain in the drowned lands rather than leave like many others had chosen to do. Gilmore never got a chance to remember his time in Freetown or have a memory of his parents. Their stubborn decision cost them dearly when bandits found them, and took their chances to attack whilst Freetown was so damaged and lawless. Less then a month old, Gilmore was carried away from Freetown by his mother in a desperate attempt to escape. His mother met her fate during that evening, succumbing to her wounds, leaving the helpless pup orphaned and alone.

But he was not alone for long. Gilmore's fate put the pup in the caring hands of the Whiteheart's, a group of caring individuals that for generations had been making a habit of adopting or otherwise rescuing those in trouble and giving them a safe home. They discovered the newly orphaned pup on their way home to Portland, and chose to take him with them. The older members of the group took care of the delicate pup, and gave him his name.

Whiteheart occupied a small area just outside of Portland, with huts they'd built and a good reputation with a few traders set up in the city, through good trade and willingness to assist, to help supply the necessities they needed for the orphans they took in. Gilmore grew up happy, knowing that he wasn't related to anyone around him, but content in knowing in his heart that they were his family nonetheless. One of the older members, Lilia Whiteheart, took Gilmore under her wing as his guardian. She made sure Gilmore was happy, and that he could pursue whatever hobbies he wanted to as he grew a little older. Lilia found him a willing teacher in Portland to teach the boy how to read and write, in the three different languages the tutor knew. When the boy wasn't staring into a book, he was taught by his older siblings how to hunt and protect himself, although with his easily distracted mind it was hard to get Gilmore to focus on anything. Outside of reading, Gilmore's favourite past-time was to make up stories, and play pretend with the other youngsters in Whiteheart. He would race around Portland or the areas around it pretending to be legendary hero, brave and strong, protecting the weak from terrible monsters or villains. Often Lilia or the other older members would join in the imaginary adventures, using the opportunity to encourage the pups to also learn as they played.

There were times as Gilmore got older that he began to feel a tingling pain in his ears, like someone was dripping hot candle wax into them. It wasn't considered very serious at first, just a small infection Gilmore must had picked up when swimming in mud with the other pups, and the older members of Whiteheart treated it with simple herbal remedies that they knew of. But the pain didn't die down, and Gilmore got used to ignoring it. Until it got much worse. From a simple irritation to a searing pain to both his ears and head, the infection spread deep into the boy's ear, often causing Gilmore to grow dizzy. Seeing the serious change to the infection, Gilmore's family sought help from a healer outside of their group. An old Coyote woman named Mathilda, cruel in her opinion of the world but determined and skilled in her trade. She explained the severity of Gilmore's infection, and spoke of the little chance of recovery. At that point, Gilmore lost consciousness often, trapped in feverish dreams that separated him from the world. He was wake up at random points, just in time to hear Mathilda talk about him dying, or Lilia asking him to be brave and be a hero like he always wanted to be. One day, Gilmore woke up and heard nothing at all.

The infection began to fade, as Gilmore's body finally fought back against it, but the damage had been done. For a while, Gilmore couldn't truly accept that he'd lost his ability to hear, refusing to believe it was permanent, and believing that one day he'd be back to sharing stories with his friends. But weeks passed and there was no change. Gilmore grew restless in the company of the old Coyote woman who, although far kinder to him now then when he was first given over to her, did little to fix the boy's unease and hopelessness. It wasn't her wise words, or his family's kindness that got Gilmore to finally go and live again, but the books he was brought as a gift from Lilia. The books inspired Gilmore, the brave heroes in the adventures demonstrated to Gilmore what determination looked like.

So Gilmore bid farewell to Mathilda, thanking her immensely for keeping him alive, and travelled back to the Whiteheart residence. Mathilda had tried talking to the boy as he left, seemingly troubled about something, but Gilmore couldn't understand what she said, only assuming the old woman was expressing how she'd miss his company. He didn't begin to think that she might be warning him about something. Gilmore only realised that when he reached home, only to find it buried under a field of ruthless flames. Gilmore had called out into the flames, desperately calling to his family. But if they cried out, Gilmore couldn't hear it. He tried his best to find someone, pretending to be a brave hero and venture into the fires to rescue his family, but found only dead bodies. Gilmore fled his home before the flames claimed him as well, unable to find any living trace of his family in the fiery tomb.

Grief took Gilmore for quite some time, and for the first time he felt truly lost. The only people who would be able to accept Gilmore for who he was were gone. Even as Gilmore tried to find friends amongst those living in Portland, none were patient enough with the deaf boy to tolerate him for very long. He became shut of from the world around him, lost in his own mind as he pretended to be like the characters in the books he'd been given. Like before, Gilmore's books helped him cope, and eventually the boy made a decision to leave Portland behind and travel north. He recalled one of the oldest members of Whiteheart would often talk of their life further north, how they had once served as a knight for a courageous and caring king. When he was younger, Gilmore had assumed they had made up that part of their story but now Gilmore clinged on to the hope that it might just be true and that maybe he could find a place there as well.
