Dale's Adoptable #6

This character is open to adoption under a Relaxed Permanent Contract. You have free reign to choose, edit and modify any of the traits listed here, or even the design of the character itself. Once you claim the character as yours, it's yours, and you are free to put them up for adoption to someone else at any time. If not, you may drop, kill them off, or NPC them as you please. All I ask for is a vague outline of what you plan to do with this character so I can pick a good first fit. A Kiritar template has been provided as inspiration for a face to this character, but it's up to you whether you color the template or use something else.

If interested, please contact Dale via PM on their OOC Dale account.

OOC Information

General

Personality

This character keeps to themselves and is neutral in most affairs. They do not feel strongly about concepts like goodness or law, but don't like seeing others get hurt. They have a bleeding heart they don't like to acknowledge, and take oaths and promises as seriously as their own survival. There is a great deal of respect and love for the world around them, but past experiences have made them world-weary and cautious to an extent. Still, this character would take an arrow for another, and could probably find themselves in the position of being a reluctant hero or bringer of change.

This character, if they had a D&D alignment, would be True Neutral (with Lawful Good tendencies). From to least importantly, they believe that they:

  • Shall honor legitimate authority that promotes goodness, because those that try to create good in the world are worth supporting
  • Shall avoid lies, because the truth is almost always the better option
  • Shall aid those who aid you and harm those who harm you, because others should expect the same treatment they give unto others
  • Shall help the needy, because sometimes a survival situation calls for one to look out for themselves
  • Shall not betray others unless your life is in jeopardy, because betrayal is a terrible thing and oaths are taken seriously

In regards to their alignment and their behavior, they are, from most to least likely, to:

  • Not aid family members in need if personal discomfort is required because of past negative experiences with family
  • Value his family (but will not heed their requests necessarily), as they are their own person and feel that blood ties shouldn't bias their choices
  • Provide for friends and expect to be repaid in some manner, because resources can be scarce and they feel guilty about putting others in a debt
  • Not be concerned with those less fortunate, because they genuinely hate seeing people in trouble or pain even if they don't always reach out to help
  • Not betray a family member unless the circumstances are dire, because no one deserves betrayal and they'd die for another person

Adopters are free to retcon, completely rewrite, or disregard any of this in favor of their own ideas.

Possible Character Names

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. They're simply ideas for an adopter to look at if they can't think of a name they like for this character.

Male

  • Beaufort: The name of a marginal sea in the Arctic and the name of its discoverer, Francis Beaufort, it is a French-based name that roughly means "beautiful fortress" or "strong and beautiful place".
  • Lasairian: An Irish name meaning "of the flames" or "little flame", based on the Irish word lasair (a flame) plus a genitive suffix. It's the name of of four different Irish saints, one of whom is the patron of the Diocese of Leighlin.
  • Tiriaq: An Inuktitut name meaning "ermine".

Female

  • Épinette: A French word for "spruce" or "tamarack", and also meaning "spinet".
  • Lasairfhíona: An Irish name meaning "flame wine", "wine of flames", or "wine made from flames".
  • Miali: An Inuktitut form of the name Mary, which is either derived from Hebrew or Egyptian and means "bitterness", "rebelliousness", "wished for child", "love", or "beloved". This wasn't found in name dictionaries, but incidentally in a PDF on Inuit grammar.

Gender-Neutral

  • Feidlimid: An Irish name possibly meaning "ever good", though its etymology is uncertain. It was the name of a king of Munster, a saint, and a father in Irish mythology.
  • Nagojut: An Inuit name meaning "friendly". This name was found using an Inuit name generator.
  • Wisawék: A Mi'kmaq word meaning "yellow".

Talents and Faults

To help flesh out a potential path for this character, a selection of randomized strengths and weaknesses has been made using Joe Larsen's Character Faults and Talents system. These are only suggestions for this character, and you are free to use, retcon, modify, or disregard these ideas as you please.

Talents:

  • Mathematical: This character is good with mathematical equations, problems, and solutions. They can quickly calculate answers in their head, figuring out complex problems in a few minutes. They have a natural sense for angles, width, height and geometry, and can easily divide a whole into even pieces.
  • Natural Composure: This character functions well in a crisis or difficult scenario. When faced with fear or horror, their nerves are steeled and their composure remains intact. They are able to make rapid decisions in life-or-death situation, and they won't immediately break down, panic, or lash out when tested or cornered.

Faults:

  • Greedy: Despite this character's generous nature, they are full of wants. They want more food, they want more appreciation, and they want to live as comfortably as possible. In times of weakness, they will eat more than their fill, crave more attention than they need, and hoard what could be given away. They have never betrayed someone by acting on their greedy urges, but there have been times when they've been tempted to do so. They also have - despite being casual about their own repayment - sometimes borrow more than they need, with all the trouble that might entail.
  • Painfully Blunt: This character is blunt to the point of lacking tact. They can't tell a white lie without feeling uncomfortable. Even if there are diplomatic consequences, even if they were trusted with a secret, they will almost always speak their mind or the truth. They may even do this when the situation doesn't call for it, such as comparing a dry chicken to sandpaper in front of its long-suffering cook.

History

This character was raised in a very female-oriented environment. If not raised by their birth parents, they were likely raised (or spent a lot of time around) female relatives and friends. If they didn't have a lot of siblings, their family would make up for it with several cousins and extended kin living in a close-quarters environment. They may have been raised in a polyamorous household, or spent varying amounts of time being raised by extended family. They themselves may have been a "little parent" to either younger siblings or cousins, watching over them while the adults went about their day.

There are a number of open territories you can use as a place of origin for this character, or create backstory and ties to. Good examples for this particular character include Mer Bleue, Rivière-aux-Graines, Portland and Tuktoyaktuk. The on-board settlement of Freetown may also be a good option.
