1.  Possible Character Names

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. They're simply ideas for an adopter to look at if they can't think of a name they like for this character.

Male:

  • Aradesh: The name of a community leader and founder of the New California Republic in the Fallout series. Though the origin of his name is unclear, it may be meant to be South Asian, and possibly derived from Sanskrit. Potential meanings include "saw-land", "land of tools", or "he who works the land".
  • Jolyon: Medieval variant of the name Julian, which is derived from a Greek word meaning "downy-bearded".
  • Mihalis: Greek form of the Hebrew-based name Michael, and meaning "who is like God?".

Female:

  • Giselle: A French name meaning "bright pledge", it is derived from the Germanic Gisil.
  • Maedalyn: Stylized variant of the name Magdalene, which is a Hebrew-based name meaning "of Magda" or "of the tower".
  • Ruperta: Feminine Spanish form of Rupert, a Germanic-based name meaning "bright fame".

Gender-Neutral:

  • Azar: A Persian name meaning "fire".
  • Caron: A Welsh name meaning "to love".
  • Sláine: An Irish Gaelic name meaning "health", and also the name of a legendary king.

3.  Personality

This character is generous and warm-hearted, charitable to the point of struggling with balancing giving and receiving. A good listener and a quiet, calming presence, this character can act as a grounding point in a more chaotic group. All they want in life is to a happy and stable existence, and will work to create success and balance in whatever pack or home they establish themselves in. They are motivated by accomplishment and see harmony as such, feeling inadequate or frustrated when their efforts to maintain such struggle or are in vain. They would do well as a diplomat or right-hand helper, but hate being thrust into a position of authority. They work behind the scenes, and remain there unless someone drags them out or they're absolutely forced to leave the shadows. In both cases, they can become very displeased and annoyed with their group, losing faith in their leadership or competency.

This character, if they had a D&D alignment, would be Neutral Good with Lawful Neutral leanings. From most to least importantly, they believe that they:

  • Shall follow the law, for it's what any good citizen should do
  • Shall help the needy, as everyone deserves a helping hand
  • Shall seek unlimited good for others, for one should love their neighbor as they love themselves
  • Shall steal only to promote goodness, but there are much better ways to promote goodness than petty theft
  • Shall not aid criminals, but knows the term "criminal" can be applied loosely and will help those they don't feel are a criminal

In regards to their behavior and their alignment, they will, from most to least likely:

  • Will not want to disappoint their family, as their family means everything to them
  • Seek secure employment, believing hard work pays off in the end
  • Believes everyone deserves fair and kind treatment, and tries their best to overcome biases and stereotypes they might have been taught
  • Supports their nation, but realizes its faults and shortcomings and has their own opinions on the matter
  • Considers public service in a leadership role an honor, but will do everything to support others with the idea rather than be appointed themselves

4.  Talents and Faults

To help flesh out a potential path for this character, a selection of randomized strengths and weaknesses has been made using Joe Larsen's Character Faults and Talents system. These are only suggestions for this character, and you are free to use, retcon, modify, or disregard these ideas as you please.

Talents:

  • Good Balance: This character has a well-developed sense of balance. They don't get sick on sea or cart voyages, and heights and high places are easy for them to navigate. A tightrope or narrow strip of land wouldn't be hard for them to navigate, and rarely do they fall or trip as they move.
  • Silver Tongue: This character has a knack for lying and presenting facts eloquently and persuasively. They can make a bad idea sound good even if they're not the most diplomatic of people. Whatever they say they present in a way that people want to believe is true and trustworthy.
  • Social Butterfly: This character feels at home in a crowd. They mix and mingle with other characters of all occupations, shapes and sizes. They're a talker at parties and know how to become the life of it. They have a knack for finding contacts and allies in different groups, and may end up with a few favors from them.

Faults:

  • Sensitive to Cold: This character reacts poorly to cold environments. They often will have to bundle up or seek a warm place to hold out until the warmest parts of the year. They are more likely to suffer frostbite, sluggishness, poor circulation and hypothermia when exposed to the cold long enough. They also have an increased metabolism in the colder months, consuming more food than usual in an attempt to keep their weight up and body going.
  • Weak In Battle: This character is easily spooked and confused by battle. The chaos of a fight will cause them to either freeze up or lash out wildly in an attempt to survive. They will often mix up aggressor and defender, and their reflexes are slow in a fight to survive. The longer a fight and the more participants there are, the more disoriented and terrified the character will become.

5.  Relationships

This character was very close to their mother or another female relative in the family, such as an aunt or sister. They are the only surviving member of their litter, though they may have adopted siblings or siblings from other litters. They were born into very harsh or unusually-tough conditions, and as a result, are very close to their blood ties. They also have a great deal of empathy and compassion for fellow living beings, but this hides a resentful and fatalistic streak that ill fortune is just around the corner. They are painfully aware of the fragility of life, and though they are kind and helpful to as many as possible, they feel they can do little in a leadership position and that leading isn't worth the trouble it causes. They also can be distant with friends due to fears of losing them, and have either never had a mate or various failed relationships for fear of getting to close to someone and losing them. Despite all this, they try to never let their inner struggles show and do their best to be a Good Samaritan to all.

There are a number of open territories you can use as a place of origin for this character, or create backstory and ties to. Good examples for this particular character include Algiers, Dublin, Paris, or Yváypa. The on-board settlement of Freetown may also be a good option.
