August "Gus" Cormier was one of four puppies: three boys and one girl. His family was very close despite how much traveling they did apart as traders. He grew up learning to fish, sail on rivers, and trade, but found that exploring was really his favorite thing to do. During his travels, he met his mate, Lucille.

1.  Appearance

1.1  Basics

by Nat

Essentials

  • Species: Gus looks mainly like a mix between a German Shorthaired Pointer and a Dutch Shepherd, although his large size comes from the Bernese Mountain Dog.
  • Fur: The texture is wiry from the pointer blood, but he is brindled like a Dutch Shepherd.
    • Optime Hair: His hair is still a bit wiry, and very dark. It is somewhat long, although it does not come down to his shoulders.
  • Facial Features: It is not uncommon for Gus to be frowning. He has a short muzzle, one floppy ear, and one ear that was bitten off. The missing ear stood up. The brindle stripes do not appear on his face.
    • Lupus: Gus is a large dog, but he is not overly bulky, nor would he be considered wiry.
    • Secui: For a dog, Gus is rather impressive, but no bigger than a large sized wolf in his secui form. He has broader shoulders in this form, but is not bulky.
    • Optime: Gus has a solid body that has been muscled through active and hard labor. He is tall for a dog, but just as agile and fast in this form as any of his others.

Coloration

  • Fur: Gus's fur is a mixture of greys and tans.
  • Markings:
    • Brindle striping with a mixture of all the colors listed except brown.
    • Due to the fur texture, the stripes are not as defined as shorthaired brindle dogs.
  • Eyes: Woody Brown
  • Optime Hair: dark gray
  • Nose and Paw Pads: dark grey

1.2  Forms

105lbs (48kg)
27 in (69 cm)

Lupus

It is very clear that Gus is a dog. He looks mostly German Wirehaired Pointer, but with some added bulk of a Bernese Mountain Dog.

145lbs (66kg)
39 in (99 cm)

Secui

Gus does not often find himself in this form; if he does, it's mainly if he's hunting something large, or getting in a fight. He gains bulk, but loses dexterity.

190 lbs (86 kg)
6 ft, 1 in (73 in | 185 cm)

Optime (Preferred)

This is Gus's most common form. His hair grows to just above his shoulder, and looks a bit wild.

2.  Personality

Gus is stubborn, grumpy, and a bit crude. However, he’s also intelligent and loyal. When in the right mood or dealing with puppies and Lucille (sometimes), he can be very kind. Otherwise, he tends to be more no-nonsense. This doesn't mean he never jokes around or does things just for fun. He simply likes to make sure everything else is in order before letting loose.

Public displays of affection are usually small, and few and far between, again except with puppies, however he truly does love Lucille and as much as they butt heads, when push comes to shove he will stand by her side no matter what. Although Gus is not exactly a ‘people-person,’ he is organized and likes making sure everything is where it should be. It’s not uncommon for him to let Lucille do a fair amount of the talking.

Along with sailing, Gus is skilled in spear-fishing as well as fighting with the spear.

3.  Relationships

Family: Cormier

Key Relations

  • Lucille: the two met when Gus found Lucille washed up on the shore after her shipwreck. He thought she was dead and intended to see if she had anything valuable on her. After helping her heal, the two are practically inseparable. They are mates.

Minor Relations

  • None yet.

Former Relations

  • None yet.

4.  Skills and Inventory

Abilities

Reading and Writing

Gus is able to read and write at a decent skill level. While he couldn't read an entire novel (and wouldn't want to) he can read basic directions and letters.

Fishing

Before Gus's first shift, he was already helping his pack fish by pulling the nets. He is now also skilled at fishing with a rod and with a spear.

Inventory

Personal Items

These are the tools Gus uses regularly, like his spear and fishing supplies. And a lot of fish.

5.  History

Overview

Gus was born to a family of fishermen. Like the rest of the group, he learned to sail on a river at a young age, having been in a canoe before he could shift. He was the third puppy born in a litter of four, and he still butts heads with his siblings at times. As a result, he enjoys traveling a lot. As he grew up, he became more and more independent, choosing mainly to explore and find new lands. During these explorations, he lost a chunk of his left ear during a fight over alcohol.

It was on one of these trips that he came across what looked like a dead canine washed up against some rocks. He decided to investigate anyway - maybe there was something he could pilfer for his pack to trade, but as it turned out, the sheepdog mix named Lucille was certainly not dead. In fact, while she was sick and injured, she was just as cranky as he was.

Against his better judgement, as he likes to say, he decided to nurse her back to health, if one could even call it that. His first aid skills were minimal, as was her willingness to let him help her, but eventually he found someone who could heal her, and the two have been together ever since. Sometimes they travel for trade across land using a horse and wagon Lucille traded for, and sometimes they travel by water. Either way, they bicker the whole time.
