1.  Appearance

Atreyu is a hybrid of three different subspecies of Canis, all of them exotic: as such, he possess an exotic appearance, himself. The breeds contributing to Atreyu's appearance are all more adapted for desert conditions: therefore, Atreyu's fur lacks the thick double undercoat of most northerly wolves. It does, however, possess a unique silken sheen. His fur is very soft to the touch.

He is light, quick on his feet, and built for endurance. Atreyu is capable of running what might pass for Luperci marathons: feats of running endurance surpassing that of the average Luperci, that is. He has walked and ran most of his life, only recently acquiring a horse with his arrival in Freetown. His figure is lithe and lean in all forms. He is not particularly large or strong, but he is devilishly fast of movement.

Brown rust makes up most of his coat. Deep coffee bean styles a spot between his eyes, his ears, the saddle of his back, most of his forelegs, his rear legs, as well as the lower part of his tail. Indian Khaki colors the insides of his ears, most of his face, his forepaws, and the underside of the upper part of his tail.

His claws, paw pads, nose, and any other areas of exposed skin are a warm espresso brown. His eyes are a particularly striking shade of old gold, frequently appearing nearly Apache gold in bright sunlight or direct light.

He has a single long scar above his spine; beneath this longer scar, a shorter one sits. These scars were earned fighting a fellow trader who sought to rob Atreyu of his wares; Atreyu was scarred and spent some time recovering from his injury, but his adversary is beneath the dirt somewhere in eastern Europe.

A scarification mark, his trade brand, marks his left shoulder. This scarification mark was given to him by a brief trading partner (and possible lover) along the road, who traveled with Atreyu for some time and then, as travelers are wont to do, parted ways with him. The marking was rubbed with red dyes and coloring agents to produce an end result that is strikingly carmine in coloration, standing out against the flaxen gold of Atreyu's shoulder quite prominently regardless of form.

2.  Personality

Pack rat, abhors throwing things away -- Atreyu potential to develop hoarding issues, given the chance. He is capable of parting with his things for the moment, although trading Sakinah and his possessions in Europe may affect him in the future with regards to this. Additionally, the loss of his mother and anyone else he could have considered family has had a considerable impact; Atreyu has, for years, used "stuff" to replace "people." Up until this point, he has kept it under control -- the future may be different for Atreyu, however.

Generally outgoing; somewhat optimistic in that he hopes for the "best end" for his father and Sakinah the slave. He may be considered gloomy, though his manner is not; this is primarily due to his proclivity speak frankly about subjects such as death, slavery, and other subjects the more light of heart consider "morbid."

Atreyu is cordial and pleasant to most of those he meets, though not particularly generous or gregarious -- he is quite shrewd and accustomed to dealing with others in a business setting rather than a personal setting; he is therefore easily misconstrued as cold or indifferent by those he meets. His desires for companionship and a place "of his own" are primarily subconscious motivations, not fully realized by Atreyu himself -- if he were to realize he really wants something of his own and friendship.

4.  Skills and Inventory

Speaks Gulf Arabic, English, and the trader's pidgin found around the Mediterranean coastal areas.

Scavenging and repairing human artifacts, knowledge of human tools and items, etc. General trading knowledge: he can gauge the value of things within a given market and is very shrewd (and generally correct) with these estimates, having extensive experience throughout Eurasia and northern Africa.

Atreyu is build for speed, running, and endurance. He is very quick on his feet and his endurance is virtually unmatched.

He has experience with sailing, though no experience with maintenance or the building of boats. Atreyu could easily master the sailor's skill set, if he chose, but sailing does not interest him nearly as much as running, walking, and riding.

Atreyu enjoys horses primarily for their companionship and is capable of speaking with many horses in low-speech, though he sometimes encounters one he cannot understand and vice versa. He will sometimes ride, but rather prefers to use them for driving purposes or to laden them and lead them by rope so he himself can walk.

5.  Weaknesses

Atreyu has a light coat and requires some kind of clothing through the winter months. He endures cold very well and without complaint, but he prefers comfort, and thus usually dons some kind of protection.

6.  Horse

ARTAX

6.1  Appearance

Artax is a grade horse of unknown pedigree. His likely ancestry involves Arabian or Oriental blood, however, as he has the small, fierce-looking head typical of these horses, as well as their finely muscled, arched neck. He is not an exceptionally large horse, standing at approximately 15.7 hands (63 inches / 160 cm). Despite his size, he is capable of carrying a Luperci rider of up to about 200 pounds.

Most of his short fur is barley corn in appearance, gradually deepening to english walnut on his legs and face, in the typical style of bay horses. His mane and tail are long and luxurious, possessing a lovely silver shade of blue-gray abbey. Artax has a star, stocking on his right forehoof, and coronet marking around his left rearhoof are swirl. Artax's left forehoof and right rearhoof are taupe, where his right forehoof and left rearhoof are paler sandal.

Artax has a brand on his hindquarter. Atreyu commissioned this brand in the likeness of his own tattoo -- his trade symbol, as it were -- in order to mark Artax as his property and prevent any thievery of the stallion.

Demeanor

Artax is a stallion. He possesses a feisty temperament around new Luperci, other stallions, and mares in heat; otherwise, however, he is generally rather docile, and somewhat prankish, as far as horses go. He accepts Atreyu's dominance, however, and behaves very well enough around his hybrid master.

Atreyu has learned some of Artax's particular flavor of low-speech, picking it up primarily through watching Artax's former owner in Freetown interact with Artax. Atreyu established similar rapport with his cart horses Amit and Zaki.

7.  History

7.1  Achievements

Catacombs

go get yo' catacombs template, son

Atreyu was born to an Arabian Wolf mother. Farizah was disowned by her own family when it was discovered she was pregnant; as such, she was young and entirely uneducated when she birthed Atreyu and his sister Mali. Atreyu's only sister died of somewhat preventable circumstances; Farizah was bringing the children to her friend to show them, and a stranger jostled Farizah in the street, knocking Mali from her grasp. The fall cracked the puppy's skull, lethally injuring her. Rather than lament the loss of her child or even lambast the stranger for his carelessness, Farizah simply shrugged and walked away from the dying puppy, continuing to her friend's home as if nothing happened.

This incident set the standard for Farizah's parenting style: she was mostly indifferent to her son, preferring to spend her time with friends or obtaining what food she could through prostitution and other nefarious means. Atreyu was spared most of these grittier details of his mother's life, as he was left to roam the streets of Jeddah, procuring food and sustenance by his own means. This existence, harsh as it was, instilled a strong desire for betterment within Atreyu, and he avowed himself to avoid his mother's situation.

Although Atreyu did not know his father, an Ethopian Wolf-Variegated Jackal hybrid, his mother related a few tales of the traveling trader: a man of incredible stamina (both of the kind relevant to physical exertion and of the more erotic kind); a rich man, with wares beyond his simple mother's imagination; a divinely handsome man, with a countenance to rival that of a god. Atreyu always thought these stories were rather exaggerated, although they did pique his interest just enough to inspire him to grow up and establish himself along the trade routes. Atreyu was, in truth, hopeful to encounter this mythical man, supposedly his father. The hybrid bid good-bye to his mother at the tender age of eight months, just six weeks after his first shift, and set out into the wide world.

Atreyu then walked and ran the traveling roads of eastern Africa, southeastern Europe, and southwestern Asia for some years. He occasionally returned to visit his mother, driven by some half-hearted homing instinct; her treatment of the boy soured with each visit until Atreyu was compelled to avoid her altogether. Some months after their final visit, a fellow trader brought news of her death from an illness which had infected her mind, the true cause of her ill treatment toward Atreyu. Atreyu himself knows nothing of this illness; it was likely non-inherited, and in any case, Atreyu himself has long since passed the age at which his mother died.

Atreyu never did find his father, although tales of a hybrid trader with insatiable appetite for women, drink, and food caught his ear every now and then. Atreyu once thought he came close to finding this mythic figure: for some weeks, he followed the scent of a stranger with an impossibly familiar scent. Of course, Atreyu has no idea the canine bearing the scent was a half-brother embarking on much the same quest as Atreyu himself. Tales of his father, frequent and loudly retold in the early years of Atreyu's travel, became quieter and less frequent, stopping altogether. Atreyu assumes his father died quietly somewhere along the road.

Atreyu experienced great success as a trader, partially due to his shrewd appraiser's eye and partially due to his endurance. Atreyu was, simply put, able to outwalk and outrun the competition. He sometimes took ships across the Mediterranean, earning his wage as a sailor, but these ventures were less frequent than his land-bound trades, which he conducted year-round and no matter the weather. His preferred area of trade was, of course, the coastal areas of the Arabian peninsula, though he ventured further into Asia, Europe, and Africa on occasion.

Eventually, he acquired a pair of cart horses, as well as a wagon and slave to drive it. Still, Atreyu preferred to walk or run beside it, shouting his purpose gleefully to all. This cart gradually became more and more ornate through Atreyu's efforts, until it was something of a covered wagon, brilliantly adorned with hundreds of trailing leather strips. These strips were each decorated with several feathers, beads, bones, and any other imaginable trinket, from bottle caps to cogs to bolts and washers.

The slave, Sakinah, was a once-beautiful collie dog mix; she had been scarred, both physically and mentally, by cruel masters prior to Atreyu. It was, in fact, these scars and the most forlorn look upon the tawny dog's face which inspired Atreyu to purchase her specifically in spite of the slave-trader's cautions regarding her demeanor. Atreyu was well-rewarded for his choice, however, for Sakinah quickly developed affections for her kindest master and served him devoutly in all things. His happiness was hers, and his slightest displeasure inspired quailing and quavering on her part, to the point that Atreyu dared not criticize her performance. Thankfully, her performance rarely required criticizing, and Atreyu was able to avoid Sakinah's terrible flaw which had afforded him to purchase her so cheaply.

Atreyu treated Sakinah with kindness; although he tried his best to regard her as property, he could not, and he found himself rather attached to her, though he was strong enough to resist love for her. He nevertheless grappled with it frequently, complicating things for himself by partaking of her womanly offerings. Despite their intimacy, he never permitted her to sleep in his bed or keep his children, though she became pregnant several times throughout their travel.

Sakinah, obedient as she was, never misconstrued her master's kindnesses for love, and simply strove to serve him better. This perhaps injured Atreyu deepest of all, though he, for all his rumination on the subject of Sakinah, has yet to realize this. Part of him could not bear to see her in such a state, but neither could he break her of it, as the dog had been raised a slave among terrible jackals in Russia -- her mind as an individual and free spirit was utterly decimated. At an age similar to Atreyu's own, he feared causing actual insanity within Sakinah by introducing her to the ideals of freedom.

Atreyu eventually tired of his usual trade routes, and headed west to the coast. He became intrigued by tales of a new world and, nearing his fourth birthday, began to desire a mate and permanent relationships, having developed primarily business relations along his trade routes. "Friends" were easy enough to come by -- many along his well-traveled routes recognized him and welcomed him into their homes for want of a good trading bargain, but Atreyu saw through their kindnesses easily enough, and knew these were not his true friends. He had only Sakinah, and she was but a slave.

He arrived in Lisbon and sold most of his belongings. His cart, beloved as it was, was stripped of its ornate decor, each piece traded for the journey's provisions or the captain's fare. He bid farewell to his horses and his slave, the latter of which was given up for his decision, at long last: Atreyu decided it was less painful for both of them if they simply part ways, for he could no longer bear the sight of her as a slave, nor could he free her from her bonds.

A third option had crossed his mind -- free her from her bonds and life itself, as it were. Atreyu had unfortunately found, however, in his attempt to free her while she slept (while he had no doubt she would offer her throat for him to slit if he only asked it, Atreyu wished to spare himself the sight of her serene face, awaiting his stroke) he was unable to kill her. Atreyu had dealt death a few times before on the road, when threat to his life or threat to his wares deemed it necessary, but he could not kill Sakinah. And so, he gave her up for a rack of fine liquor, which he in turn gave to the ship's captain as part of his payment for passage.

Atreyu arrived in Barbados utterly remorseful of his decision, but he could not return; the fall had come, and with it the bad weather and poor sailing. It was, in a word, too late for Sakinah, and the best he could do was hope she'd found another kindly master such as he had been, or that she'd died quietly and peacefully, as he still believed his father had. These thoughts were his only comfort where Sakinah was concerned, but a sinister voice whispered in his ear she'd find no further kindnesses in the world. Atreyu, typically indifferent to spirituality, earnestly attributed this voice to the voice of the spirits, god, or some otherworldly power.

Mistaking the voice of his conscience for the condemnation of the soul, Atreyu spent a few months hopping from island to island in the Caribbean, doing sailor's work and finding solace in the good moonshine rum and the winter seastorms that seemed to match his gloom. He spoke to almost no one save his ships' captains, and some ships ceased to hire him altogether for his gloomy reputation. Atreyu heard stories of superstitions surrounding him, how two ships had run aground after he'd served on them. Atreyu dismissed these stories, certain if there were any power at work seeking to sink ships, it would surely sink his ship for the wrong he'd committed in trading off Sakinah.

With spring's arrival, Atreyu's gloom finally lifted, and he perhaps forgot Sakinah, or at least stored her far back in his memory so she her ghost did not hang about him any longer. Renewed of his quest, Atreyu bartered his now experienced seaman's labor for his passage, and landed south of Chesapeake Bay. He was dismayed to find a small port and a few ramshackle buildings, and took his leave of the port village immediately.

Atreyu then spent several weeks meandering inlands, spending his time with mostly-feral red wolves and red wolf hybrids in the foothills of the Appalachians. These canines were utterly fascinated with his more human ways, and Atreyu sated himself for some time by lording about these canines somewhat, enjoying their praise and indulging their incessant questions regarding his former manner of life.

This behavior was somewhat aberrant for Atreyu; it is likely he was overcompensating and indulging himself during this time, likely due to his prior depression and mostly asocial months in the Carribbean sea. He traded some goods to them, but this was primarily a trade of pity: the bone bits, feathers, and other "natural" trinkets they provided him were of little use, and Atreyu simply kept them in his pack for lack of anything else to do with them. He soon moved on, heading northward even with the cold weather.

Always capable of finding good trade, Atreyu returned to the more civilized coastline, drifting from fishing village to fishing village and occasionally happening upon a larger port town. With the rearrival of winter, Atreyu procured himself some thick deerskin clothes from one port town, and soon found himself in Freetown, surrounded by similarly-clad Luperci. Delighted with this find, Atreyu spent some weeks within Freetown, quickly earning a reputation as he scavenged from somewhat distant human areas and brought things back to Freetown. Although he certainly did not amass his former European wealth, Atreyu soon found himself comfortable and -- at least for the moment -- satisfied. Things had once again filled the hole in his life.

Unfortunately, this was not to be for long. This time, the urge to find something of his own -- a woman, a family, anything of permanence beyond his material possessions -- struck harder and faster than it had before. Atreyu soon found himself trading for a horse, a particularly attractive Silver Dapple stallion he dubbed Artax. After branding this horse, Atreyu set off north, intrigued by tales of a cluster of packs to the north.
