'Souls Super Writing Month (SoSuWriMo)

Premise

Some of you may be familiar with NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, which is an open challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel in 30 days during the month of November. This is a relatively daunting task, but the whole point is to just get it out! Lots of people have ideas and want to write stories, but they never get around to getting them penned. As such, NaNoWriMo is about quantity over quality, where wordcount matters more than content or theme or plot or whatever else. Editing can always come later, but you have to write the words first! NaNoWriMo has inspired many spin-off events including Script Frenzy in April, where in screenwriters aim to write 100 pages of a screenplay in 30 days. NaBloPoMo is National Blog Posting Month, also in November, where bloggers try to blog once a day for the entire month.

In a similar spirit, SoSuWriMo is 'Souls Super Writing Month! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write 50,000 words worth of posts in 31 days from midnight EST January 1st to 11:59 pm EST January 31st. (In 2010 and 2011, this was Jan 2 - Jan 31, giving 30 days instead of 31).

At an average of 350 words a post, that's a little less than five posts a day for thirty days. c:

Annual

All participants that manage to net 50,000 or more words during the month of January receive the following:

  • Special SoSuWriMo Champ icon
  • Sparkling OOC Catacombs Skull (year specific)
  • Winners' Signature Banner
  • Custom title

Retired prizes

  • 'Souls Tangible Prize Pack
    • TPPs were included with the annual prize package 2010-2022 before being removed in 2023 due to high costs and low funds.
    • Over the years the TPP included various merch, such as pinback buttons, stickers, acrylic pins, coasters, and more.
    • Leftover merch from annual TPPs become available in the 'Souls Store later.
  • Custom avatar
    • Custom avatars for all winners were provided by Kiri 2010-2015, by Mel in 2016, and again by by Kiri 2017-2023.
    • In 2024, all winners were instead entered into a raffle for a variety of different types of art by different artists.

Bonus prizes

In 2022, bonus prizes were awarded to players in the following categories:

  • Most Posts Under 500 Words
  • Steadiest Pace
  • Most Completed Threads
  • Most Diverse Roleplayer
