Forum Profile Guide

1.  Before You Start...

What constitutes a good profile, anyway?

Quality is key. Ensure that certain fields are filled out with accurate, easy-to-read information. Why? Other players may browse your profile to get a feel for your character when roleplaying with you. Clearly stating your character's appearance gives others something to describe in their own posts, fleshing out your character's personality can add emphasis to their dialogue, and your character's history at a glance can help shape future interactions.

Keeping your profile updated may also help you to roleplay when your muse grows quiet!

Now, enter your User Control Panel (UCP) to update your profile!

2.  What IC Fields Should You Fill Out?

  • If you haven't joined yet, the required fields to fill out before doing so are sex, date of birth, appearance, biography, and personality. You can find more information about the requirements of joining with a new character here, in the Joining Info & Example thread on-board.
  • Consider keeping your forum profile browsing and scanning friendly; extremely long histories or extended lists of threads would be much better suited to the 'Souls Wiki (here!) or the forum. You may want to consider including 'bullet point' or <50 word summaries at the top of each section. Sometimes, people may check your character's profile to confirm a certain detail such as measurements or species, so make sure that information is easily findable and accessible.
  • If you're struggling with even starting, consider checking out the 'Souls Character Generator! Dale has also made a great Character Quickstart Generator on the wiki for even more ideas!

2.1  Joining Essentials: Appearance

Your character's appearance is one of the most important when threading with a new player. The first thing another character will notice is how your character looks -- try to devote a good amount of time to filling out this section. Since your character is a Luperci, you'll want to include information about all three of their forms and note the form in which they usually appear.

Some people write detailed descriptions for each form; others write a single base description and simply note the differences from one form to the next. You may find it helpful to describe Lupus, Secui, and Optime beneath separate headers. Try to think of things that would be the first thing someone would notice, things about their appearance that may make them stand out or look unique. Do they have any strange scars or tattoos? Is their Secui form larger than average, or is it smaller and built for speed rather than strength? Do they style their mane in odd way in Optime form? All of these questions and more can help you fill out your appearance section.

Things to Think About:

  • How their species presents (e.g; if they are a coydog, do they look more coyote or more dog?)
  • If they are more feral or more humanized
  • If they are dirty or cleanly
  • Their weight
  • Their height
  • The quality & color of their fur
  • Unique markings

2.2  Joining Essentials: Biography

It might help you to write out your character's history in a simple list format first, and later expand upon those bullet points. Think about how your character reacted to a certain situation, and why they reacted that way. If you're struggling a lot to come up with a history for a completely new character, you can try to adopt an Open Character instead. Or, alternatively, try asking around in the community to see if anyone would be willing to have your character be related to their on-board character. Many players have their family open-for-creation on request, and many are very excited at the prospect of having active on-board family members.

It's also important to make certain your character history is realistic. If they're traveling from Russia, for example, it doesn't make sense for them to have left their homeland last week and they're now joining 'Souls -- remember travel times.

Things to Think About:

  • Where and when they were born
  • Their family's current status
  • How they were raised
  • Important events that shaped them
  • Packs or groups they were apart of before

2.3  Joining Essentials: Personality

Once you've done that, you should also fill in their personality. Think of a few words to describe their traits -- extroverted or introverted, emotional or logical, analytical or imaginative, dominant or submissive? How do they react to certain situations -- newcomer at the borders, a stranger with bad attitude in the neutral territories, a lost puppy? Do they have a strong sense of right and wrong, or does their morality shift to accommodate the situation and their best interest? What motivates them, and what frightens them? What do they enjoy and what do they dislike? Browsing one of the detailed character templates can give you several good starting points, especially if you pair them with the character generators and this page.

Although this may seem daunting, considering these aspects can help you fully flesh out your character. Keep in mind that personality and history often go hand-in-hand. For example, would a character who respects authority attack their old pack leader? Or did the consequences of that attack give them the submission they have today?

Things to Think About:

  • How they reacted to their history
  • How they approach problem-solving
  • What they think of others
  • What they think about themselves
  • Their habits, hobbies, & skills

2.4  Joining Essentials: Basic Information

  • Sex: This is your character's sex; although this does not necessarily have to equal your character's gender.
  • Pronouns: Consider filling this out even if your character's pronouns quote-unquote 'match' their sex; it doesn't hurt to be clear!
  • Date of Birth: Remember, 'Souls is set in present day. Keep the aging chart in mind. A Luperci born in 1998 would be 12 actual years old in 2010, but to a canine, this is equivalent to roughly 80 years.

2.5  Non-Essential Fields

You may notice there are some things that haven't been covered yet -- these are things you don't have to worry about if you're just joining 'Souls.

  • Relations: Although it may be helpful for you to think about your character's family, you don't have to have this figured out when you first join.
  • NPCs: This one can be pretty important, depending on if you'd like your character to have any NPCs or not. Be sure to check out the RP Guide for more information on NPCs if you'd like your character to have one. It contains everything you need to know to get started.
  • Link Wiki?: If you've made your character a wiki page, toggle this to link it automatically.
  • Catacombs: This is a series of icon rewards for various achievements; see the linked topic for details.

3.  What OOC Information Should You Fill Out?

The good news -- you don't have to fill out anything on this section of your profile. ;3 Totally optional!

  • Your OOC name is displayed below your character's avatar on every post, and it can be helpful if you don't want people referring to you by your character's name!
  • It's very helpful to note which character account you prefer to receive PMs on in your OOC information if you have multiple characters and don't often check auxiliary character accounts. Private messaging is the standard of contact on 'Souls, including for pack leaders.
  • If you have messengers and you're open to random contact from 'Soulsters, fill out your IM handle information and state that you're open to contact. Discord users can hang out in the 'Souls Chat to meet other players.

4.  BB Coding Basics

Profiles accept all bbCode that is accepted in regular posts. Profiles do not accept HTML. You can find a BBCode guide on the Forum Guide.

5.  Notes

  • Is your profile mature material? Make sure to mark it with bbCode templates!
  • Have no artistic skills, but still would like to visually represent your character? Check out the Templates forum, where many kind artists have uploaded bases for you to color.
  • Can't color? You can try making a Request for some art, too!
