White Poplar

  • Species: Poplulus grandidentata
  • Common Names: White Poplar, Canadian Poplar, Big-Tooth Aspen, American Aspen
  • Description:
Medium-sized deciduous tree with straight trunks and gently ascending branches. It grows to be 60–80 feet (18–24 m) with diameters of 8–10 inches (20–25 cm). Its leaves are similar to Quaking Aspen, but slightly larger and having bigger teeth. The bark of younger trees is olive-green, thin and smooth; after 30–40 years, the bark is gray, thick and rough with grooves.
  • Habitat: Common
Because of its adaptability to a wide range of soils, White Poplars an be found virtually everywhere. It is most abundant on sands, loamy sands, and light sandy loams, however.
Locations:
  • While this species of poplar can be found anywhere, it is specifically known to comprise the small, forested islands interspersed throughout Canaan Bog.
  • Additional Notes: This is an important food source to various wildlife, which are known to feed on its leaves, bark, and twig buds.
