The Pauson Horse breeding program is several-year ongoing project that began in 2012 and was spearheaded by Salsolan Boss Salvia Eternity to develop a distinctive, hardy northern breed. In the years since its conception, the Pauson horse has become Salsola’s unique creation. Noted for their characteristic pale mane and tails, dappled coats, weight-bearing capability and sturdy footing, these valuable animals are the pride of the Thistle Kingdom.

1.  Breed Characteristics

1.1  Size and Build

A true Pauson horse is a medium to large breed, with large (16+ hands) being preferable. The average height for the breed is about 15.3 hands (63 inches, 160 cm), although it may vary from 14.2 to 17 hands (58 to 68 inches, 147 to 173 cm) at the withers. Although much of the breed’s desired conformation resembles a light or mixed draft horse, Pauson stock animals are surprisingly quick on their feet, with the exceptional balance and agility required to surmount difficult mountainous terrain. The Pauson standard is generally considered to be a Baroque horse, and is agile but sturdy.

The horse is expected to have a long, relatively thick and muscular neck (large fatty crests are commonly seen in well-conditioned stallions), maintained at a suitable arch. The heads are expressive and intelligent, with Spanish influence resulting in an elegant dished appearance and small, shell-curved ears. Long, sturdy legs with good bone support a robust overall frame.

The Pauson is noted for having a soft downy winter coat that sheds out to a short, sleek and often dappled summer coat. It can often grow an excessively long mane and tail. Leg feathering is dependent on stock lineage and preference - thick feathering may guard the hocks from scratching injuries made by thistle or thorn, but also requires greater regular maintenance to remove snared twigs, underbrush and debris.

1.2  Temperment

In spite of having been founded from the fiery temper of its principal warmblood stud, the Pauson has since been bred for a manageable, if responsive, temperament. Although not necessarily docile, the breed is eagerly trainable, and will respond well to an experienced horse owner.

As with any breed, the Pauson line has a fair amount of variety with the personality and drive of each horse differing uniquely. However, by and large, the Pauson is an extremely intelligent (and accordingly high-strung) steed, and young untested animals may not necessarily be the best option for first-time horse owners.

1.3  Colors

The standard coloration of the Pauson horse is most commonly referred to as a Black Silver dapple. This refers largely to the horse’s mane and tail, which must be flaxen and of a lighter color than the base coat. True breed-standard horses can fit into one of four subcategories: Black Silver (BS), Bay Silver (BYS), Grey Silver (GS), and Palomino Silver (PS).

Typically, the appearance of lighter rings (dapples) of hair occurs in these dark pelts to varying degrees - some animals may have noticeable dappling, while others may appear as a flat, uniform color.

Dark desaturated bases, primarily within the BS and BYS range, have greater desirability in the studbook for their ability to provide good camouflage in the cool-toned northern landscape regardless of season. Animals with reddish undertones - occasionally seen in the BYS or PS subcategories - may be disqualified for breeding purposes so as not to add vivid saturation into the lineage. Even so, richer red tones do not affect the performance or nature of the horse, and whilst removed from the breeding line, these color cast-outs are still valuable riding animals and, if male, are likely to be gelded and sold as such.

Black Silver
Pauson - Black Silver by Alaine

The traditional Pauson horse is a Black Silver throw, meaning that the dam and sire of the foal are both dark-coated silver dominant animals. These genetics will result in a dark slate, charcoal or black foal with a flaxen mane and tail. They should be born dark and remain desaturated for the entirety of their prime. Seal brown or extremely dark brown animals may fall into this subcategory, as true-black can be hard to regulate. Often, foals that are born BS may later lighten to a different subcategory, and as such are re-labelled.

Examples: 1?, 2?, 3?
Bay Silver
Pauson - Bay Silver by Alaine

The most commonly bred Pauson horse due to the dominance of the bay gene. Whilst not as desirable as a Black Silver, the Bay Silver Pauson comes in a delightfully wide variety of hues, from rich chocolatey brown to soft mahogany. The BS Pauson’s points (legs, ears, nose) may be darker than their base. Cooler or more muted bay tones are preferable over bolder, richer ones - extensive red coloration, such as in a blood bay, may disqualify the animal from stud.

Examples: 1?, 2?, 3?
Grey Silver
Pauson - Grey Silver by Alaine

The rarest subcategory of Pauson, and controversially the least desirable. However, these horses often have the most spectacular dappling come summer. Grey Silver Pausons can be deceptive as foals, sometimes born black as pitch and blanching as they age into prime. The third queen of Salsola was known for favoring a grey Pauson mare and bringing them back into fashionable popularity.

Examples: 1?, 2?, 3?
Palomino Silver
Pauson - Palomino Silver by Alaine

The Palomino Silver is easily the flashiest of the subcategories. Introduction of this color can be traced back to the wild herds, once shared with Inferni, that have long roamed the peninsula. The paler and more soft-gold the palomino, the more desirable its overall hue; PS Pausons that have too much red pigment to their appearance may be disqualified from breeding.

Examples: 1?, 2?, 3?

1.4  Markings

Credit: Players

Simple white markings are common in the Pauson breed, especially on the legs and head. Some markings are more desirable than others, and if the white markings are extensive and irregular enough, they may disqualify an animal from being added to stud.

  • On the face: Star, stripe, blaze, snip, interrupted stripe, white/’bald’ face (dark coloration on ears, muzzles, and around eyes)
  • On the legs: Stocking, sock, mid cannon, pastern, crown, coronet (dark coloration on all extremities/points, especially in the BYS subcategory)
  • On the body: Dapples are desirable on the summer coat. Extensive white markings, i.e. tobiano, paint, splash and appaloosa, are undesirable - but may not necessarily disqualify an animal for breeding if it otherwise meets all Pauson standards.

1.5  Confirmation Restrictions

Disallowable Builds

Although the Pauson breed is generally lenient with variants such as size, muscular build and temperament, there are some traits that will disqualify an animal from being in the breed registry. Breeding anomalies such as a roman nose, excessively feathered hocks, excessively shaggy coats, excessively heavy builds or excessively slender builds are all disallowed within Pauson breeding stock.

True Pauson horses should aim for a robust friesian-esque build, with an appropriately deep chest and broad back. Those bred for carrying larger riders may display more shire-like proportions. Animals displaying too much hot-blooded influence (i.e. Arabian, thoroughbred, akhal-teke, barb) will be removed from stud.

Disallowable Bases

There is a lot of variety within the four standard subcategories of Pauson horse - some PS animals might be light blonde whilst others are dark gold, some GS animals might be almost white whilst others are a deep stormy grey. However, there are some colors that are intentionally removed from the Pauson line:

  • Chestnut bases — any horse with a strong reddish undertone is disqualified from stud
  • Roaned bases — roaning is extremely uncommon within these lines, and undesirable when it appears
  • Blood bay bases — akin to a chestnut, the blood bay base is too vivid and red-pigmented to be permissible for stud
Disallowable Markings

Extensive white markings, such as those that cover 40% or more of the body, are likely to disqualify an animal from stud. Paint, tobiano, and appaloosa colorations are easy examples of flashy or striking markings that are generally disallowable. Even so, Pauson horses born with such markings are still considered high quality steeds, and are highly suitable for sale or trade.

2.  Notable Skills

With its foundational bloodline heavily grounded in the Rocky Mountain horse, an animal bred for its agile and dexterous nature in the unforgiving terrain of the Appalachian Mountains, the Pauson breed is famed for its goatlike surefootedness. The breed is extremely adaptable to any cool-temperate setting, and as long as its hooves are appropriately maintained, a Pauson horse is capable of incredible feats of endurance over uneven land.

The breed is noted for its remarkable intelligence and canniness, which likely comes from the large bloodline influence of the cunning wild northern horse herds.

Coldblood draft animals were introduced early into the lineage to improve weight carrying capabilities within the breed. As such, the modern-day Pauson is larger and heavier-boned than its formation counterparts. While this results in decreased speed and acceleration compared to a warm-blooded or hot-blooded animal, the ability to bear high-percentage wolf riders and a strong pulling capacity more than make up for this loss in the eyes of Salsola.

2.1  Warhorse

When given the appropriate long-term training from either the Equinest or one of Salsola’s veteran equestrians, Pauson mounts chosen for their aptitude to endure stress can make for hardy and brave war horses. Drilled in combat scenarios alongside their riders, these valuable horses can often turn the tide of success in their favor on the battle-field. Larger and heavier builds are favored for this role, as the added weight of an armored Luperci and his or her weaponry requires immense strength to carry for any prolonged period of time.

2.2  Labor

An added and practical benefit of breeding large horse stock is the Pauson’s useability in rural and domestic settings. Able to pull logs for construction and plow fields for harvest, these strong, robust horses earn their worth during everyday life in a primitive civilization. Not all Pausons are suitable for labour - only the more docile among them are patient enough for such a role.

2.3  Trade Caravan

Pulling capacity and weight-bearing capacity often go hand in hand. With their density of bone and strong, thick necks, Pauson horses are more than capable of pulling carts and wagons, or carrying packs and supplies. With the correct handling and training, a Pauson horse can make the perfect companion for a merchant who needs a reliable way of moving their goods to and fro.

2.4  Hunting & Scouting Aid

Although their large size makes running down a fleet-footed prey animal difficult, the steady tenacity of the Pauson breed makes them more than suitable for routine patrols to check and maintain hunting traps or territory borders. The wild mountain stock bred early into their line allows these horses to traverse difficult uncleared terrain with relative ease. If appropriately fed and cared for, a Pauson horse’s endurance is relentless.

3.  History

While initial roots began in 2021, the Pauson breed first notably arose in northern Nova Scotia during summer of the year 2014. The breed was an accomplishment of Salsola’s first queen, Boss Salvia Eternity, who had, at the time, been attempting to mix the genetics of the local hardy northern wild horse population with larger, imported cold-blooded animals. Her intent was to create the perfectly adapted breed for traversing the Thistle Kingdom’s treacherous terrain whilst still having the bulk required to carry heavier wolf-blooded riders.

The breed was named for the hardy, beautiful flowering bloodroot, a toxic plant that is native to the area.

Experimental breeding began with a purebred Rocky Mountain stud named Black. The stallion had exceptional endurance and footing, but lacked the valuable draught-horse size and calmer temperament often associated with domesticated cold-blood breeds. Even though his hotheaded temperament was undesirable, the horse’s natural qualities allowed for his exceptional breeding value.

It was discovered after the first few foals of the season had dropped that the stud’s unique coloration often proved to be dominant over that of the foal’s dam. Aesthetically, the combination of a darker unblemished base pelt with a lighter, flaxen mane and tail was appealing to the queen and her consorts, and this quickly became a breed standard. The dominant gene was labelled the SD (Silver Dapple) gene, for its ability to dilute the mane and tail to a lighter color, whilst leaving the primary base color dark and true. All studbook registered Pauson horses are (believed to be) dominant carriers of this same SD gene.

Character Contributors

In Salsola, it is common for the Equinest (Horse Master) to oversee the continuation of the Pauson Stud, however many characters outside of this role have used their respective talents to improve the breed. The following Salsolan characters have made notable contributions in overseeing, guiding, training, or aiding in the creation and maintenance of the Pauson horse:
