The Houses of Salsola
On this page... (hide)
Over the great ages since our creation, the culture of Salsola has become increasingly civilised. Its constant drive toward technological progression and symbolic elevation from the primitive lifestyles of many other Luperci have led the Thistle Kingdom to place great value in the structures — both hierarchical, heretical, and hereditary — that form the pillars of its society. Whilst there is no greater Law than the Law of rank and Crown, this has not stopped the cultural adoption of a secondary form of social order, determined by one’s status upon birth; The familial House. From foundation to present day, the involvement of continuous bloodlines within Salsola’s history have led to some Houses bearing greater informal status than others. To be the product of a bloodline that has earned such a reputation is to be a member of a Salsolan House. The placement of a House within the subversive informal categories depends entirely upon the notable progressions of the carriers of its name. Just because one lone individual achieves great acclaim within the Kingdom does not guarantee their bloodline the comfort of House esteem, only secures their own individual notoriety. OOC NOTE: It is important to note that Houses are flavor-content only, and do not bear any implications for promotion or demotion during Salsola’s monthly activity check. No favoritism is granted by Leadership to characters of any particular House. All members, regardless of character House, are treated first and foremost according to their IC rank, which will always have the most significance on roleplay within Salsola. |

- House Sigils — Each House chooses a banner to represent itself.
- Largely symbolic, these sigils are sometimes worn by members of a House, or displayed on their homes and possessions.
- There is no mandated use for a House sigil; it can be as integral IC as a player chooses. The only specified use of this imagery is on a banner that is hung in the Feasting Hall, IF the House is a Noble one. At present, Noble House banners hang in a line on the crumbling stone wall behind the Boss’ chair at the head of the feasting table.
- Conversation — The use of a House can be used in greeting a fellow Salsolan of a similar or lesser rank, or when inquiring about one’s family.
- For example, a greeting might go as such: “Welcome, Wolf of House Blue!”, or an inquiry might go as such, “Wolf, how does House Blue fare after such poor trade?”.
- Biases and Stereotypes — Members from Houses may have certain predispositions or expected traits / skills that their House is known for.
- Perhaps members of House A are particularly known for being silver-tongued traders, or, maybe are known for being overly snooty towards lower-ranking members.
- House Feuds — Though Salsolans are expected (as a whole) to be loyal to the pack and its members, like every family, some branches just don't get along with others!
- Maybe House A and House B are known for having a strong dislike for each other because of XYZ reason!
- Maybe a particular member is looked down upon by the rest of their House...
- Maybe a House is in danger of splitting into two as members take sides!
- Hierarchy with the Hierarchy — While one's IC rank within Salsola is ultimately (and officially) what decides one's status, the prestige of one's House may also play an unofficial role in one's social standing amongst their own peers.
- For example, a member of a Noble House may perceive themselves to be "better" than someone of a Lesser House of the same rank.
- House Leader — A House is commonly thought of as having a Head of House that leads it in the interest of consolidating familial wealth and prestige.
- This matriarch or patriarch does not need to be the oldest surviving member of the House, nor necessarily the highest ranked; This is something for Players to decide themselves, depending on what makes the most sense IC.
- If desired by the Player and their House members, the House's Head duties could include things like: ensuring the House's prestige through trade, Jobs, or other skills; suggesting (or pressuring) political match ups, business deals, etc. with other Houses; or ensuring that House members are upheld to a certain standard.
- OOCly, remember that this is all for flavor content! This unofficial role should never be abused or used to coerce or bully other Players or their characters :(
- Joining, Creating, or Abandoning a House — Make the most of movement to, between, or from Houses! It's your story to tell! ;)
- Being adopted into a House could be seen as a great honor! Or, could be cause for disdain by House members who do not approve.
- Pledging loyalty to a House could be something done willingly or begrudgingly!
- Creating a new House could be a way to make a name for one's self, or, be used to cut ties from an existing House.
- Renouncing one's name to a House could be done for any number of reasons. It could seen as an act of rebellion or making a statement, could be done for completely innocent reasons (mateship, to honor someone else, etc.), to cut ties from the House, or for something else!
2. Create and Editing Houses
A House (or bloodline) only becomes relevant in Salsola if a number of factors are fulfilled. The status of a House depends entirely upon the on-board historical and current actions of those which hold its familial name. Read on for more instructions and information about how to qualify for a House, and where your House would be situated within the informal pecking order. |

What qualifies as a House?
For a character’s familial line to qualify as a House within Salsola, it must have no less than three (3) current or previously members of the pack that hold / held the familial surname when they were actively played.
If there are only two characters of the same bloodline in the pack, they may be offhandedly considered a Fledgling House, or a House-to-be.
How to determine a House Prestige's
The fame of a House is determined by the notoriety of the members of its bloodline — in clear terms, the IC Ranking of characters that hold the familial surname of the House. A House will fit into one of the below categories:
Of course, House Prestige is not necessarily static. A Lesser House could, for instance, become a Noble House if the required number of their kin are promoted into the Inner Ring. This is certainly more common than the reverse — Once a House has become Noble, it is unlikely to fall from status unless the players involved in that House determine that they wish it to, or there is a prolonged period of time where there are no active characters from that bloodline in the pack. We ask our players to keep tabs of House Prestige on their own time. If you believe your character's House is owed a rise in Prestige, please let Leadership know! Though there is no precedent for it IC, perhaps a Fell House can be redeemed... Or perhaps a Noble House can fall into disregard...
| |||||||||||
Creating House Sigils | |||||||||||
When choosing a sigil for your House, be sure to keep in mind what is realistically portrayable for Luperci craftspeople. The simpler your House iconography, the better! We recommend using colors that are easy to create in rudimentary dyes for fabric, and shapes and patterns that are simplistic enough to be carved into wood or stitched into fabric. This Wiki Page displays the House sigil on a banner alongside its details. Blank versions of these banners have been pre-made for use. The variety is only in the styling at the bottom of the banner, which is entirely for flare, because we’re fancy like that. Please choose one to put your House’s emblem onto — do NOT use your own banner template, or it will be removed. If you do not have image editing software, please post in Maintenance thread or in the SL Discord, where Leadership or another helpful Salsolan player will be able to give you a hand!
Adding a House to the Wiki
Once you have consolidated all the necessary information, be sure to add your House to this Wiki Page to enable other players to begin referencing it IC! If you have any questions or queries about this process or to do with Houses in Salsola, please contact our OOC Account for assistance. If you're not confident in updating the Wiki yourself, make use of our Maintenance thread! Here is a blank template table that you can use to copy/paste and fill out for your house:
