1. Guidelines
Conduct |
Where should I stable my horse?
Personal horses are more than welcome to communal spaces - especially in consideration if properties owned by characters are unable to accommodate steeds or don't have personal stables. Outsiders that are staying for an extended period of time are permitted to keep their horses with Charmingtown's stables at the Lancaster Stockyard. Communal stables - within The Parish and Charmingtown - are large animal lodging buildings; horses are stalled or turned out to pens within range of these stables. Free-roam pastures are wide open, mostly fenced-off locations; Shelter is provided by sparse forest covering or the spare, small, luperci-made roofs to keep the animals out of the elements. They are semi-regularly supervised by scouting groups, or DCG's Gauchos, Caballistas or Rustlers to ensure their safety. To maintain the balance of the Gang's resources with horses, if you stable your horse in communal stables or pastures, please note your horse's population on our tallies!
Horse Ownership and DCG
It's no secret that horse-ownership and training plays a large part in the culture of the Gang - and it's expected that characters are able to care and provide for their equine companions or livestock alike! Given the broader community culture of DCG, it is openly encouraged that players pursue assisting with communal livestock. Most of the herd maintenance can be expected of DCG's pNPC's; However, general statements on the herds (i.e.: monitoring free-range pastures for potential rustlers, checking on health/well being and reporting on injury), or small maintenance tasks (i.e.: mucking stalls, filling feed troughs, grooming) are permitted and most certainly welcome! If a player chooses to house their character's horse in communal areas, said animal is expected to be of a temperament that will not disrupt the balance of the existing herds - Overly aggressive/nervous individuals are encouraged to reside in personal stables to maintain peace and avoid injury/conflict. Stallions are to be kept to personal stables, or stalled, and are not permitted free-range with the Gang's communal mares.

Rider trained, combat trained, cart trained. Knows a few fancy tricks on command. Known to have a stuttering whinny that sounds oddly like a "laugh". Eager to please, nippy, hard working, high-energy.

Confident and personable, if a bit demanding. He enjoys physical affection and is mildly playful with a stubborn streak. Midas is not necessarily ill-tempered, but he can be a bit of a bully to inexperienced handlers.

Fast and eager. Notably obedient and listens well enough to directions, however his dopiness has gradually turned into a more coordinated bounciness. Has mild food aggression around other stallions or geldings, but shares well with mares. Dainty.

Sweet and hard-working. Tenacious. Able to switch between work-mode and a gentle demeanor at the drop of a hat. Basically trained with both rider and pull training - she's strong and steady, making her a good work horse. However, she's still quite green, and can startle under inexperienced hands.

Subdued, submissive, and somewhat flighty. She is somewhat aloof and overly cautious - in stark contrast to companion horse Whilk. She is inseperable from the other mare, who boosts her own confidence and curiositiy.

Dainty and shy, paired with a stubborn attitude. She's got a quick wit and regularly will attempt to weasel her way out of obligations to her handlers if not adequately bribed, or if adequate trust hasn't been built up. She bonds strongly, and tends to forgo relationships with other horses to hyper-fixate on whomever she is bonded with.

Seemingly confrontational and stares at handlers only to sprint away. Unbridled punk energy and habitual kleptomaniac; Playing keep away is the most fun thing. Tenacious and fool-hardy. Tests boundaries with others in her social circles - be that horses or luperci. She can be sweet and makes attempts to co-groom handlers.

Mischievous, playful, and overtly friendly - Whilk seeks out attention from Luperci and enjoys mental stimulation with simple puzzles. Unfortunately, this does make her a bit of a pill when it comes to food - if it is not put out of her reach, she will manage to steal them.

Flighty and mildly nippy - Providence is a proud horse that doesn't tolerate handlers who lack confidence. She does enjoy ear rubs and is easy to ply with snacks. Cajoles handlers for attention, but on her terms. Has picked up on her mother's pushiness and does not relinquish her space easily..

Wynona is a no-nonsense mare who takes little guff and can often times bully unseasoned riders. Not above getting physical with others to get her way, she can be reluctant, nippy, or otherwise abrasive. While she has grown more tolerant of coyotes, she is staunchly independent and doesn't usually 'check in' with handlers.

Being a baby
Clumsy and dopey, but well-intentioned. Has a tendency to lean her forehead onto luperci and push them, though it seems to be a ploy for affection more than anything - the longer she's ignored, the harder she pushes.

5. Polvo de Oro![]() While not a horse breed in a traditional sense, Del Cenere has put efforts into the maintenance of horses and horsemanship resulting in, at least advertised and acknowledged among the Gang, the Polvo de Oro - otherwise known colloquially as the Polvo horse. Any horse born within Del Cenere's borders is considered a Polvo de Oro.
There is no strict 'breed standard' nor homogenized appearance for the Polvo itself, though many of the breeding stock has consisted of "light" bodied horses between hot-bloods and warmbloods (i.e.: quarter horse, mustang, standardbred, morgan, thoroughbred, et al.). It is best described as a "trail horse", with a sturdy, but graceful build. There's a preference for quick, sure-footed individuals with responsive handling. Larger individuals hit the 16 hand mark, but rarely above that, given the Gang's base breeding stock, and as such, they are not equipped to carry large luperci. "Standard" preferred coat colors consist of roans, duns, buckskins, and smoky, or sooty genetics.
What makes a Polvo de Oro any different than a regular horse? In truth? Nothing! (At least, perhaps, to Outsiders.)
The Polvo is beloved by Del Cenere, as horses are considered invaluable within the culture itself. Well-handled and trained from birth, Polvo de Oro horses make for indespensible companions, and, while still in possession of their own personalities, are, for the most part, personable and exceptionally trained animals. Polvo horses are not trained by bit, force or spurs - Relationships with handlers are built utterly on trust, persuasion and teamwork, making for horses that are sensitive to their riders and responsive to cues.
Barding, tack and physical markings ![]() Aside from training, Polvo are typically recognizable to Outsiders by their tack.
Bardings for communal horses are a standard harvest gold, off-white, black, and usually red dyed wool fabric with a set pattern. Individuals may choose to decorate their Polvo's bardings differently, or even have standards within their own families.
For ease of identification of their stock, Polvo de Oro horses also are branded at a relatively young age on the left shoulder, both to signify the animal's breeder/trainer, and to deter thieves. Individually owned/bred Polvos must be subjected to branding.
Polvo de Oro tack consists of, but is not limited to:
How can I get a Polvo de Oro? As stated, any horse born within Del Cenere is considered a Polvo, and thus, if a Del Ceneren wishes to refer to their horse as a Polvo, they are welcome to! (To note: all of the information on the Polvo 'standard' is formed around DCG's communal animals). However, for Outsiders looking to obtain their own Polvo de Oro, they have to wait until Del Cenere Gang's annual Lancaster Stock Show, for any stock of weaned/young horses being sold off.
