Salsola

The Curse of the Sanctum was a multi-part event in Salsola that ran from February 2019 – January 2020.

More OOC summary stuff here.

Players of the Salsolan community were encouraged to make they wanted of the plot during its initial stages, and to delve deep into what it meant to be a Salsolan; where lies bled with truths, rumors spread like wildfire, and realizing just how well one could play the game of favors and power that play such a deep role in Salsola’s culture. The plot brought about the creation of the #ic_rumors channel on the pack’s Discord server, which was used to add yet another layer and fun to Salsola’s IC atmosphere. For the first time in Salsola, OOC voting to determine how certain events of the story would proceed forward was introduced in the Part IV release.

1.  Background – A Grave for Puritans

Note: See the Timeline for specific events.

It began with the falling of the red star.

Such portentous events as these build with great momentum. A child at the time, Elphaba Revlis, remembers very little of the actual incident; but the story of it has been scarred into Salsolan culture ever since. It is impossible to ignore such a heavenly mandate. The night the red star fell, Siv Helsi was crushed to death in her yurt, and the ground splintered and the sea rose up to swallow it. The scar turned white. Salsola mourned, but never for long. Life has a way of striving for normalcy, making even the greatest traumas easy to set aside.

It began again on the cusp of autumn past. Enough time had lapsed for the connection between catalysts to seem tenuous. Fighting dissenters against her rule in the political sphere, the consequences of the second event seemed unfortunate but not motivated to the new ruler. When Ondine Heiwa fell from the bluffs [M] to be consumed by her terror and the grey waves below, the gesture was bleaker; a reminder. Don’t forget, her death extolled, don’t forget the price. The Boss and the Erilaz worked hard to conceal the uneasy, greasy rift this death left in its wake. A wedding, a celebration, a feast. Good things come in threes, but so to do curses.

Loki Helsi, second Crone of Salsola and third Sanctum attendee, was found burned alive at the stake on neutral territory just beyond the border. His death marked the third blow, the third word on a blank page, the third warning.

This time, Elphaba listens.

2.  Part I – Nobody Expects the Salsolan Inquisition

Note: See the Timeline for specific events.

Loki’s horrific death has set the grand stage for strife within the Thistle Kingdom. Convinced now that the manner of his horrific murder matches the tone of the Sanctum Tier’s previous two losses, Elphaba is certain that her Faction has been cursed. Her fury has broad reaches, and demands penance. She wants nothing more than to hold a scapegoat for this loss in the palm of her hand, and will go to any efforts to see someone punished.

First, she must make certain that the source of this violent hex does not come from within her own coven - or worse, that no secret wielder of dark Craft has infiltrated their midst without her knowledge. To assess the internal situation, she has reassigned O'Riley’s immense capabilities specifically to this task. Previously the Erilaz, he was re-titled the High Inquisitor.

O’Riley has drafted a select assemblage of trusted Faction-Tier individuals to assist him in his task of hunting out any problematic individuals within the Family. Shield Members Brocade Valentine, Kamari Kaiser, Idrieus Eternity, Krios Revlis, and Merchant Member Helena Troy Lykoi are titled Inquisitors. As Inquisitors, they have been assigned a very specific task - through any means and with any force necessary, they are to uncover treasonous intentions within the pack, particularly any relating to misuse of witchcraft. High Inquisitor O’Riley has made it clear that they are to keep tabs on one-another also - No one but the Boss and the Erilaz himself are truly free of suspicion.

There is a grace period lull in time, during which the Inquisition prepare themselves to attend their new duty, and undertake training from völva witch Kynda Helsi as to what signs they are hunting for. Kynda and her daughter Víborg were mysteriously summoned from Portland just prior to the funeral, and her abrupt and authoritative presence in the pack gives many in the coven cause for concern. Suspense builds like electricity in the chilly air.

As word spreads that a witch-hunt is building, the populace of Salsola react in a myriad of ways. Some scramble to hide their poisons and potions, fearing that any sign of non-mandated Craft might draw unwanted attention; Others push against the tide of suspicion and fear, loudly proclaiming their dissent and drawing the dangerous eye of the Inquisition; Some even relish the chance to finally watch a witch burn.

3.  Part II – The Devil We Knew

Note: See the Timeline for specific events.

It’s mid-spring in the Peninsula. The boglands are rich with heavy, wet loam. Due to an obstinate winter the final thaw has yet to come, leaving Tantramar marshy and treacherous. Here and there the more stalwart flora is returning, the hedgerows and evergreens thick with verdancy and the perfect place for spying eyes to loiter.

In the Thistle Kingdom, everyone is on edge.

The Inquisition has conducted a thorough cleansing of the denizens of Salsola. The air is tainted with foul, stale secrets brought to light - some have suffered the loss of face, whilst others yet have capitalized upon the upheaval of their neighbors. For every truth uncovered, a viper’s nest of lies are born. In the end, a single individual is brought forth for judgement. Delfina Heiwa, daughter of Isabella Heiwa, sister of the dead Seer.

Murderer [M].

The noble house of Heiwa is in disgrace. Persecuted by the Inquisitors [M] after poisoning and viciously attacking [M] Kamari Kaiser with the intent to silence her, Delfina is convicted of an attempt against the life of a Faction Tier elite, and accused of sororicide.

A public trial - the first of its kind - is ordained by the young Queen. Imprisoned until her sentencing, Delfina’s agonising wails and demented shrieks can still be heard echoing through the Ruins. Judgement is nigh, and Salsola is not known for its mercy.

Let the trial begin!

4.  Part III – A Grand Reckoning

Note: See the Timeline for specific events.

It has been some moons since the Boss ordained her Shield as royal Inquisitors, and the relentless pursuit of justice (a flexible, dangerous word) began. The persecution of an evil-doer, a murderer culpable of treason and hexes, spread like a plague through the Thistle Kingdom and beyond. At first the vigor was feverish - the Inquisitors searched high and low, uncovering many dirty secrets in their path. In spite of the revelations surrounding the murder of our dutiful Seer, the Queen remained unconvinced that Delfina was solely responsible for the curse set against her Sanctum Tier. The Heiwa woman’s maddened ranting suggested to those in the Coven that she may have been persuaded - possessed, even - by a much stronger source of the Craft. Suspicion rose rife between neighbors and allies, and further nefarious incidents within and around Salsola heightened the need for vengeance.

Yet still the Inquisitors found no proof, no criminal, no scapegoat for the Elphaba's terrible wroth. The Boss and the Erilaz are overheard having a heated argument in the Throne Room. Eavesdroppers whisper about terrible sounds coming from within. It seems the queen's frustration is starting to turn inward, against those who she has chosen to serve and protect.

A pressured, suspenseful air settles over the realm of Salsola. Unified in dread, we wait for the guillotine to fall...

... Until finally, it does. Driven now with dangerous zeal to find someone, anyone, to punish, High Inquisitor O’Riley’s violent gaze finally turns beyond the thistle borders. In the Eastern Realms, Salsola finds the first tangible sign of proof [M] — and the first confession.

A memo, delivered by crow and word of mouth, warns all Salsolans to be especially on guard against any Outsiders that are found loitering in the neutral territories east of the Kingdom’s realm. Fueled by the increasingly frenzied energy of the Inquisition, Salsola is now actively hostile to loners in the areas surrounding our claim.

The queen calls together her coven beneath the baleful gaze of a heavy harvest moon. The ancient and primeval ritual [M] the witches undertake, seeking fortune in the pack's hunt for the curse-maker, seems to finally pay off when Salsolan scouts come across two loner camps lingering close by our borders. Rumor has it that long-awaited proof of the curse-maker resides among them! Recognizing the potential danger in allowing these to remain, and eagerly pursuing an outlet for our misplaced ire, the Boss permits a plan to raid the encampments.

The Inquisitors - led in two separate squads by Elphaba and O’Riley - gather zealous members to their cause. They are looking for any signs of dangerous witchcraft being practiced in the camps, and have enlisted a number of Salsolans to aid them in capturing the Outsiders for interrogation. In the early morning following All Hallows Eve, using the fog as cover, the Inquisition finally makes its move. Finally, finally, Salsola has caught a taste of the retribution it craves.

However, one of the encampments refuses to be subdued...

The White Knell Camp

The White Knell Camp

The White Knell camp is a small group of Outsiders who have made an encampment to the east of Salsola’s borders, in a small grove of native yellow birch trees. Rumors began about the camp after a couple of Salsolans discovered their proximity to the Pictou border - Later on, a scouting party spying upon them would observe mysterious and suspicious activity at the site of the encampment.

The denizens of the White Knell camp are a small family of predominantly hound-dog hybrids. They travelled to nova scotia after being ousted from a larger community in Quebec, purportedly for a conflict stemming from a child’s conception. They are all fluent in French and the common tongue, and - in spite of being travel-worn and poor - have high levels of humanization.

Priory Larue is first seen by the scout group at white knell as a woman in rags, rocking something swaddled in her arms. She is the mother of Morrow Larue and an unnamed, deceased child whose bones she keeps as throwing-runes in a pouch on her belt. She is vague, addled and a little simple in the head, albeit supposedly harmless. She very much loves her son. Priory practices the Craft, which her half-brother Tenet strongly disapproves of. Sometimes she says things that make no sense.

She was captured with her son, Morrow, by Silas del Morte.

Priory’s infant son. Morrow’s father is an unknown dog from the family’s origin of Quebec. O’Riley frames White Knell for Loki’s murder by placing one of his semi-melted silver adornments in the camp prior to sending out a scouting party. The raid group later discovers this bracelet in Morrow’s swaddling, and takes it for proof of his mother’s culpability.

He was captured with his mother, Priory, by Silas del Morte.

Priory’s mother, and the matriarch of White Knell. A stern, intelligent and disciplinarian woman who excels at sword-fighting and only wants to keep her family safe. She is the one who found Loki’s bracelet, and felt it was a bad omen, but relented to Ingress’ wishes and later gave it to her eldest daughter for safekeeping. Will not go down without a fight - recognizes O’Riley’s scent from the bracelet when the raid party arrives.

She was killed by O'Riley Eternity.

Patina’s husband and Tenet and Parva’s father. A pious man with a greedy streak. When Patina finds Loki’s bracelet, he convinces her to keep it. He considers Priory and her son a burden, but cares for them both to keep Patina happy. He is a skilled fighter, preferring to fight in his secui form to utilize its large size. Will keep fighting out of pride long after he becomes outnumbered.

He was killed by Aidan Blacksun, who was assisted by Kamari Kaiser.

Priory’s self-righteous half-brother. A sulky young man with a smart mouth who often acts out against his stern mother. Believes Priory’s dabbling in the Craft to be wicked, and is often nasty to her. Cares very much for his full-blooded younger sister, Parva - maybe a little too much (dog bloodlines don’t stay pure by themselves!). Is a novice warrior learning to fight with daggers, but can be easily overwhelmed by someone more skilled.

He was captured by Narcissa Greygrief.

The youngest daughter of Patina and Ingress. A clever, soft-spoken girl who acts sweeter, simpler and more innocent than she really is. She has a good relationship with everyone in her family, and often helps Priory take care of Morrow. She has secretly been wandering Salsola’s borders, even though Patina forbid her to do so; Members of the raid party may recognise her scent. More of a natural negotiator than a fighter, she is likely to avoid combat where possible.

She was captured by Jaketta Nocturne.

The Underhill Camp

The Underhill Camp

The Underhill camp is a small cluster of bandits who have made an encampment in the open moors at the base of the Halcyon range. Their camp is distinguished by a nearby large naturally-formed stack of boulders that have rolled down from the mountains. Rumors began about the camp after a couple of Salsolans discovered their proximity to the Amherst border - Later on, a scouting party spying upon them would observe mysterious and suspicious activity at the site of the encampment.

The Outsiders at Underhill are a predominantly wolfdog hybrid bunch, with two notable outliers. They arrived in Nova Scotia after tailing another group (White Knell) into the area from the landpass near Portland, and are planning a surprise assault to overpower them and steal their meagre goods. Although most of them appear to be Luperci, they are feral in composure and have low humanization, with no clothing and few weapons among them.

The indisputable leader of the Underhill encampment. Sarre is absolutely vicious. Her dominance comes from a manic temper and demented eagerness for physical conflict. Career loners, her family has never been a part of a pack and never will. She took her brother Jout as her mate, but killed the first litter of puppies she recently bore him after noticing ‘imperfections’ in them.

She was killed by Elphaba Revlis, who was assisted by Julius Valentine.

The biggest of the siblings, Jout is his sister-wife Sarre’s right hand. He pushes his resentment and shame down onto his little brother Jobrin, and frequently physically abuses him. In spite of his size and combat prowess, Jout is dumb as a brick. He nonetheless makes a mean tag-team duo with his buddy (and secret lover), Buxton. When in combat, he uses his impressive size and strength to overwhelm his opponent.

He was killed by Kaeli Blacksun.

Mild-mannered and highly anxious, Jobrin is the complete opposite of his siblings. Unfortunately a lifetime in their company has soured his sensibilities terribly, and he has very little moral compass or manners to speak of. Perpetually hungry and cowering, Jobrin is his brother’s punching bag and his sister’s chew toy. After a short but miserable lifetime of being the Omega, he would much rather flee than join the fray.

Jobrin managed to escape during the fray.

A mysterious young man of very few words. He fell in with the Underhill encampment out of necessity, when they made him an offer he simply couldn’t refuse. Where he came from, nobody knows. Why he sticks around? Nobody knows that, either. If confronted, he will defend himself with a crude-looking dagger that he wields with surprising skill and speed. However, it is clear that Kaimkillen has no great loyalty to Sarre, and he will not lay down his life for Underhill. If overcome, he will accept defeat and submit.

He was captured by Coaxoch.

A grizzled and feral veteran. Dalgai has never shifted out of her Lupus form, and it is unknown if she even has the capability to do so. Her body is liberally littered with scars. She resentfully stays out of her daughter’s way - it is likely that she was, at one time, the leader of the Underhill crew. Now she squabbles with the others for scraps at Sarre’s feet. As an aggressor, Dalgai fights dirty, using her sharp snaggly teeth and overgrown claws to her advantage.

She was killed by Grievous Eternity.

Jout’s boofhead buddy and on-again off-again lover (not that they would ever dare let Sarre know). He has been with the siblings since they were young, and considers himself one of them. Has more loyalty than sense; Would do anything in the world for Jout. Absolutely anything. When threatened, he charges into the fray headfirst berserker-style, attempting to catch his opponent off-guard.

He was killed by Brocade Valentine.

5.  Part IV – The Burdened Goat of Leviticus

Note: See the Timeline for specific events.

It is midwinter on the Peninsula.

Our largest bodies of water are trapped beneath a thickening layer of ice. Even the boglands of Tantramar are hard underfoot, frozen deep down beneath the crust. The air is cold enough to sting the lungs. It burns the soft, sweet parts of bare skin left exposed for too long. It burns like flame.

A young woman from one of the loner camps is weeping in her cell. She rocks back and forth aimlessly. When the guards come too close she reaches for them with trembling fingers. "Let me feed him," The dog begs of them in a sing-song voice, "He is an autumn child. He doesn't know the cold! Let me feed him! Let me, let me, won't you?" The sentences dissolve. The words lose a meaning they never had. Slowly, she unravels.

"Do you know a secret?" She asks the darkness one night, smiling though her cheeks are wet, "The seed is rotten. It will not bear fruit. This ground is too cold for the worms. They cannot do their humble work. Rotten," Her laughter is the worst of it, high and gentle like a child's. "Rotten, rotten, rotten-"

The woman's name is Priory Larue. She has been identified by the Inquisition as the Cursebringer, a witch of heinously malevolent intent - having been framed for the role by none other than our very own Erilaz. O'Riley Eternity is a cunning man with a particular knack for misplacement. In her baby's swaddling his raid group found the melted silver bracelet that had belonged once to the dead Crone, Loki Helsi (long may the ancestors reign in paradise).

Who else might hold such a grotesque keepsake but the individual responsible for damning it in flame?

Separated from her surviving halfsiblings, the witch is inconsolable and nonsensical in turn. Some Family members bring her food and water. Many others come simply to see the bringer of the Sanctum Curse, and jeer at her through the confines of her cage.

The queen's royal decree is not long in coming. She demands a public trial to close this grim chapter in her fraught reign for good. By the shadow of a new moon, Salsola gathers to decide upon the fates of Kaimkillen, Parva, Tenet, Priory and the baby boy, Morrow.

You hold their lives in your hands. What will you choose?

The Cursebringer's Tribunal

The Outsiders are to be tried for their crimes against kingdom and crown. A solemn event, the trial will be held at dusk in the veritable darkness of a new moon. All denizens of the pack are expected to attend, gathering to the Stone Ship high on the cliffs of the western coast. Overlooking the inky depths of the loch, this ceremonial location is not one for the faint of heart.

Standing around the key stones will be the primary members of Salsola's jury - it's Wardens, Henchmen, Arbiters and members of the Inquisition (all Faction Tiers). Per his duty, the pack's newly titled Proctor will be permitted to act as a prosecutor on behalf of the crown, stating the "facts" as they lay. May his bias serve him well, for the queen will be watching!

Though all events pertaining to the trial will be played out IC in a pack thread, we will actually be deciding the fates of some of our captives (Priory's fate will ultimately be decided by the Mafiosi, but the other surviving Outsiders will also require sentencing) via a poll hosted on our Discord Channel. All Salsolan players - regardless of their rank or status - will have a say in what fate they believe their characters would choose for the prisoners.

This extends, as well, to the precious baby - Morrow.

If you haven't already, make sure to join our Discord chat so that you can take part in these big ongoing decisions! We will be advertising the thread there once it has been posted. Don't miss out!.
