1.  Appearance

1.1  Essentials

Urskar is at least 75% wolf and it is her wolf ancestry that influences her appearance mostly; however, she is believed to have had a possibly mastiff-type dog somewhere in her ancestry and this shows in her wider, more doglike chest, powerful shoulders, broad forehead, large, wide paws and thicker, heavier muzzle with powerful jaws. She is on the larger side for most wolves, especially for a female, though not quite 'giant'—measuring somewhere in the region of around 99—100cm in standing height. Her broader build and dense fur however tends give the impression of her being perhaps even larger than she truly is. She tends to carry her head low in a skulking posture, with paws set well apart from each other when standing. She is muscular in build, but a little underweight at present due to her recent poorer diet as a result of living alone as opposed to alongside other loners.

Her fur is long, thick and 'shaggy' in places; largely black all over save for a reddish-brown mantle running from the tip of her saggital crest to the end of her mane fur between the shoulders, a similar reddish-browness on the lower half of her tail and in two spots upon the brows on her face. Her fur is thicker, almost 'woolly', in winter months. In summer, her coat is noticeably shiner with a bloom on the smoother back fur when in good health, and the brown areas are more apparent.

Her ears are pointed, yet relatively a little smaller than those of perhaps most wolves/wolfdogs in contrast to the rest of her head; her right ear has been largely torn off completely. Her muzzle is covered in small bite-scars across its bridge.

Her eyes are a pale yellow in colour with an intense, piercing gaze; especially when intending to intimidate others.

  • Speech: Deep, gravelly, gruff voice, somewhat roughly-spoken, has a peculiar kind of dialect inherited from her mother, says 'en't' in a similar fashion to 'ain't'. Her speech implies that her heritage may not necassarily have always been Canadian in origin, sounds a little like some kind of weird mixture of maybe Southern United States and possibly a northern British accent.
  • Scent: Mist, earth and river water as typical for a Mistfell Vale inhabitant; typical 'wet dog' smell when wet.
  • Quirks, Gestures, Etc.:
  • General Posture and Body Language: Generally submissive in most interactions with pack members, carries her head quite low to her body when walking in a skulking gait, seldom carries her head too high. When facing enemies or strangers however she squares her shoulders and stands with her front legs widely-spaced to show off her size and bulk, and lowers her head in such a way that her eyes appear paler and more intimidating. Tends to stand with front legs quite widely-spaced anyway in most situations.

2.  Personality

Gruff, hardened and roughly-spoken, Urskar is a little of a contradictory character in some ways. To all outward appearances, she seems a formidable and even frightening creature, with her imposing physique, facial scars and piercing stare. Yet in truth, Urskar is ultimately subservient in nature; she accepted her role as a 'lackey' rather than a leader since puphood and perhaps as a result of her troubled early life, she has learned to simply take the blows and do whatever it takes for an easy life as her default survival tactic— somewhat ironic, considering she could be strong enough to inflict serious damage to her oppressors if she ever retaliated. Though well able to fight, Urskar prefers to avoid conflict where possible and instead use her looks and harsh words to intimidate her opponent into submission when she can. Upon actually engaging in battle, she tends to rely more on basic strength than clever tactics or agility; a trait that is sometimes her downfall, as evidenced by her numerous scars.

Though seemingly menacing and distant to her enemies, Urskar is otherwise soon revealed to have a friendly if rough-round-the-edges, essentially kindly, easy-going nature, with an innate gentleness and protectiveness towards those close to her, sometimes clumsy with perhaps a slight lazy streak and a tendency for gluttony; occaisionally prone to bluntness or tactlessness, though rarely means it.

Yet although Urskar seems happy to play the role of the brute sidekick, she has a darker side and may be smarter than she lets on, a deep world-weariness behind her often oafish façade. She secretly resents being treated poorly by those of higher rank, but ultimately believes the struggle for dominance to be pointless and would rather allow herself to be seen as being of no threat than to have to fight constantly to gain respect. Moreover, though she appears content to lick the muzzle of those who would oppress her, there is another, bitter side to her that would laugh behind their backs.

6.  History

Urskar was originally born a stray with three younger brothers (Shard, Cudgel, Flint), to a dog named Culsha who was already quite old when she gave birth. Culsha made it very clear that she had never wanted pups and told the pups of their worthlessness constantly, often resorting to violence when angry, causing Urskar to learn her place very quickly for her own safety.

Enduring their first winter while only very young, the cold was an ever-present danger to the litter as well as the scarcity of food, and Culsha had to frequently make journeys away from the den each day to find enough food to sustain both herself and her offspring, a struggle which did little to improve her attitude towards them. During these times, Urskar assumed a caring, big-sisterly role over her smaller brothers, telling stories and playing games to comfort them, and keeping watch for any danger that might harm herself or her siblings—despite being far too young and weak at this stage to be able to do much to protect them. Being only a pup herself, Urskar was still unable to prevent two of her siblings dying while quite young, mainly of a mixture of exposure and malnutrition. When the oldest brother simply left the den and never returned one night, Urskar was left solely with her mother, now even more bitter and resentful in her age, her lack of teeth causing her to resort to scavenging carrion to survive. While searching desperately for sustenance one day, Culsha was injured in a rockfall, causing her to be paralyzed in the lower half of her body and completely reliant on Urskar to bring her food and water. As Urskar was somewhat of a poor hunter at this stage of her adolescence—her mother’s own declining ability having made it difficult for her to teach her daughter properly—it was difficult enough to find food to feed herself, let alone her mother—relying mostly on carrion, invertebrates and the occasional smaller, slower prey when it could be found—and both individuals began to deteriorate rapidly in weight and health.

When Culsha eventually died after no more than a couple of weeks in this state, Urskar was left alone, hungry and afraid, and took to seeking the company of other, more dominant loners from time to time when permitted to do so; some of which took advantage of her vulnerable situation to exploit her for their own benefit. However, despite the unpleasant nature of many of these partnerships, this did at least enable Urskar access to enough food in order to regain health and condition, growing to her characteristically larger size.

Urskar has since joined the ranks of Mistfell Vale in an effort to improve her situation, where she still continues to reside until the final disbandment of the pack.
