Sawyer Cook is a member of The Troupe. He acts as their Dealer, growing, producing, and trading cannabis and other products.
Born in Erie, and under a different name, Sawyer was one of three children in his litter. Unfortunately for him, his melanism marked him as a bad-luck child. This led to an unpleasant dynamic within his family, and by the time Sawyer was old enough to live on his own, he had left them. A failed romance drove him to abandon Eire completely, setting sail across the big lake and to the furthest stop he could afford.
One he was back on land, Sawyer sought to make a living as an adventurer – aiding those in need, doing tasks which would reward him with food and shelter (and sometimes more, if he was lucky). It was during one of these quests that he first met four other individuals that would become his new family. They traveled together for many years until something terrible happened, claiming the lives of his companions and leaving Sawyer the lone survivor.
He spent the next few years pawning off his remaining possessions, abandoning his former lifestyle and creating a new identity for himself. For quite a long time, he lived in obscurity.
A chance encounter in Portland changed the course of his life, thrusting him into a new existence with The Troupe.
In the weeks following the flooding in early 2022, Sawyer developed an infection which gradually worsened and eventually claimed his life.
Origin: An old family name, Sawyer comes from the literature The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. His surname, however, is entirely falsified -- and something of an inside joke.

Description:
Sawyer is a mongrel dog. The first thing of note about him is his age – in the twilight of his life, his skin is starting to sag and his bones are a little more prominent than they ought to be. Despite this, he looks well-cared for: he has a small belly despite his otherwise skinny frame, and his fur is still relatively thick.
Though born entirely dark, as Sawyer has aged he has begun to go white around his muzzle and eyes. A pale blue, they remain sharp and alert (and often a little red around the edges).
Optime Hair: Thanks to some assistance, Cook's shaggy hair is kept trimmed and out of his face.

1.2 Personality
Summary
Cool, collected, and often stoned, Sawyer is someone who at his core is compassionate. From a young age he did his best to treat people well, though sadly, few did the same to him. His boisterous nature was discouraged by his parents, but this did little to phase Sawyer. In the face of this he became questioning and combative, with a stubborn streak that has not left him.
Though generally kind, there is a very real capacity in Sawyer to attempt to manipulate people and situations to his favor.
Raised by religious parents, Sawyer was never a true believer. His faith was thrown into question early on, and completely severed following the death of his sister. He was exposed to several different types of spiritualism and religion during his travels, but remained a steadfast atheist.
The Troupe's patron goddess, Lady Luck, is viewed more as a metaphor to Sawyer. Despite this, he has begun to grow a little superstitious as more and more coincidences seem to happen.

Parents: Sawyer's relationship with his parents was dysfunctional. He was put into the “scapegoat” role owing to his appearance, which his highly religious community found a sign of evil and misfortune. Though he strove to overcome this, his parents never really showed the proper care or affection that Sawyer so desperately sought. Their abuse ultimately led to his decision to cut them off entirely.
Siblings: Though the dynamic between Sawyer and his siblings, a brother and sister, was less hostile than that of his parents, they too understood his role in the family. His brother Ovidio was particularly nasty to him as they aged, realizing that he remained “the golden child” as long as someone else was the punching bag. They were constantly at odds with one another, and even physically violent. Tekla, his sister, was more empathetic to his plight. She would (in private) comfort and provide for Sawyer when he was in need. Unfortunately, she was brutally murdered during their youth. Her killer was never found, and this left a gaping wound in the family that could not heal.
Descendants: Before Sawyer left Erie, he had found love. Carmela came from a large family and was herself seeking escapism, and this drove the pair together. Their romance was short lived – issues arose between the lovers and her family, and ultimately, Carmela chose her family. Unfortunately, she did not realize she was pregnant until after Sawyer had left. His son was born into Carmela's family, where despite his questionable origin, most people accepted him. Celestino lived a normal life, and went on to have a mate and child of his own. He did not learn about his real father until shortly before his mother passed, and resentful, has given up any hope of seeing the old man. Sawyer's grandson, Cosmo, was raised by his parents and massive extended families. Dotted on and spoiled, he wanted for very little in his youth. His world became more complicated when he overheard a death-bed confession.
2.2 Other Relations
Key Relations
Everyone in The Troupe is of great importance to Sawyer, though he's more familiar with some than others.
The Amaranthe brothers, Calrian and Malik, are the ones who helped organize the Troupe during and after Sawyer was assaulted in Portland. Though young and a little naive, the twins are honest and steadfast dreamers – traits Sawyer once sought to embody himself – who have left quite an impression on the old man.
O'Brien was the the first to leap into action when Sawyer was in danger, and the old man hasn't forgotten this. While much of O'Brien remains a mystery, Sawyer isn't oblivious to whatever shadow seems to haunt the foreigner. There's certainly a part of Sawyer that feels fatherly towards O'Brien and he tries to provide advice as best he can.
Mateo Salcedo is someone who reminds Sawyer a bit too much of his past. He thinks Mateo, like his cousins, is naive – but it seems that Lady Luck plays favorites, and Mateo always ends up making it back with a new, outrageous story to tell.
The only other adult in the group, Adrianna Julia , has earned Sawyer's respect. He is fond of her assistant, Vivian, and often finds excuses to give the pair any special “trinkets” he comes across.
When Salem first came into their midst, Sawyer wasn't sure what to think of her. He has since come to see her as a kind woman, even if he isn't entirely sure her fortunes are up to snuff.
Gaston Trouillefou was discovered by Sawyer when he was hiding out in Stálormr Path. Suffering from alchoholism and half-starved, the collie-dog was soon brought into the fold. Sawyer thinks Gaston just had a rough patch and likes him as a person, even if he is an egomaniac.
The two coyotes who joined the Troupe if only due to their connections to the Amaranthe family couldn't be more different. Jethro Lykoi is stern, withdrawn, and seems to have a good heart beneath all that. His companion, Marlowe de le Poer, has always rubbed Sawyer the wrong way.
Luckily, Jethro's sister Adina Inferni has more charm than her kin. Her healing skills have become vital to Sawyer, who has never felt better.
Spunky Galilee Haskel delights Sawyer, who thinks her charming.
Indis was picked up by the Troupe during the blizzard of 2020. Though he initially thought her harmless, following her brutal defense of their home, he has begun to reassess just who Indis really is.
Kidlat was a member of Sawyer's old adventuring group. An exceptionally clever dog who was born to immigrant parents, Kidlat left home to seek his fortune on the road. He was the defacto leader of the party.
Gormlaith was a member of Sawyer's old adventuring group. Strong, beautiful, and troubled, Gormlaith escaped the expectations of her home in Ireland by fleeing across the sea. She worked as a mercenary before pledging herself to a greater good.
Emanoil was a member of Sawyer's old adventuring group. Remarkably intelligent, Emanoil sought to better his knowledge of the world by seeing it firsthand. He acted as a medic, and knew more about plants than anyone else in the group.
Myron was a member of Sawyer's old adventuring group. Loud, strong-willed, and always ready for trouble, Myron gave up a promising future to chase after a dream.
Specifically experienced with growing and propagating cannabis. He understands, more or less, that male and female plants are needed to produce viable flower. Sawyer is able to grow from seeds and in moveable pots, though with a proper garden his crop has truly begun to flourish.
Tradesman (Master)
Mostly known for his marijuana, but regularly carries and deals other goods. Sawyer no longer travels for trade, but will gladly do business with anyone passing through the area.
Composting (Dabbler)
Sawyer has a hunch that old leaves, bark, and other materials can turn into dirt. He's trying to figure out if he's correct, but hasn't had a chance to settle anywhere long enough to find out.
Auxiliary Skills and Hobbies
Cooking (Master)
Able to stretch the smallest meal, Sawyer is a talented chef. He is most skilled in preparing meats and fish, especially in stews and other hearty, filling options. Furthermore, he is aware of what makes a food good or bad, and recognizes poisonous or otherwise dangerous ingredients. He is capable of gathering root vegetables and morels.
Whittling (Journeyman)
His specialty is carving pipes, though Sawyer is able to fashion crude animals and other shapes.
Wood Carving (Apprentice)
He has figured out how to carve into larger pieces of wood and trees using his knife and a blunt object.
Dowsing (Dabbler)
Someone showed him this goofy stick trick to find treasure. Does it work? Usually not, no.
4. Inventory
Trade
Sawyer has been trading ever since he gave up adventuring. He has traveled all over the east coast – it is possible to have encountered him before he came to 'Souls. Most of his dealings are in his own product or items other people have traded to him. A fair trader, Cook expects his business dealings to be equally fair – he will not allow himself to be undercut, nor would he trade with anyone who gave him reason to think badly of them.

Coloration: Like most skunks, Babs is largely black, with a white stripe extending from her head. This splits at her shoulders, and continues down her flanks to the rump and tail. Babs also has a white patch on her chest.
Seeing Babs rooting around for bugs or other food. As she is crepuscular, she is most active at dawn and dusk.
