1.  Appearance

1.1  Essentials

Basics A coyote wolf hybrid, Rafi looks mostly like a smaller wolf, with only a few hints to his coyote heritage. His large, radar dish ears and low sweeping tail reveal his mixed blood, but the rest of his powerful, broad frame is all wolf. Most of his coat is a golden tan that fades to a sandy cream color along his undersides. A blanket of various shades of brown blanket his back, extending down over his shoulders and reaching from the top of his tail to his ears. Black arches across his back from shoulder to shoulder in a solid stripe, broken by a patch of creamy white between his shoulder blades. In optime form, his broad, heavily muscled shoulders and torso narrow sharply to his hips, evidence of his active, rough, and tumble lifestyle. Rafi is still used to the harsh, ever-present desert sun of the southwest, so he wears minimal clothing. Just a pair of worn buskin trousers tied around his waist with a braided length of rawhide. Various pouches of various sizes hang from that rawhide, along with a large hunting knife with a handle made from horn and his trusty old rope. As he has traveled further north and experienced the bitter winters common on the east coast, Rafa has added a thick, wool sweater and a mostly waterproof leather poncho on top to stay warm. He lives a highly humanized lifestyle, and his choice of body modification, including a simple silver hoop piercing the base of his left ear, shows that clearly. Brands on his arms break thick, short fur. Those brands from two simple, inch-wide bands around his left bicep, and three just above his right wrist. 2.  Personality

Quiet, and fairly reserved, he is the epitome of the strong, silent type. Rafi can be incredibly empathetic with horses and builds incredibly strong bonds even with wild animals. He hasn’t been around many children and can be a little awkward with them. Still, he is incredibly gentle and caring with kids. He treats them much like he would a wary, mistrustful horse.

He can be very short and abrupt with adults, especially those he views as incompetent. Not everyone has as much experience or general know-how as him, but common sense is important. Still, Rafi has a deep respect for rank and will always obey his superiors, even to his own detriment.

Because he is so calm and reserved, he approaches females at a slow and steady pace. Respect and his own version of chivalry will kick in, and he will make sure absolutely everything goes at her pace. He’s not the type for short flings or one-night stands, so when he begins a relationship, it’s for keeps. He’s been burned before, so he always makes his intentions very clear before things go very far.

He is deeply ashamed of his coyote blood and had his ear pierced to help draw attention away from their size. Rafi doesn’t hate coyotes, though he views them with wariness and suspicion. He would never admit to being anything less than one hundred percent Mexican Wolf. This stems from the way his birth pack treated him going up, with constant bullying and scorn.

6.  History

His mother, Juanita Rojas, is a Mexican Wolf, and his father, Matias, is a Southeastern Coyote and Great Plains Wolf Hybrid. Their relationship caused major conflict in her blood purist pack, and he eventually took off, leaving her pregnant and disgraced. Rafi and his twin sister Maria are born on February 19, 2017. Their coyote traits are only shown in their overly large ears, making their mother happy. She hopes her pups may be accepted, however reluctantly, by her pack. As they get bigger, the other pups tease and bully them, calling them thieves and liars, making fun of their ears. Juanita is trying to regain her lost rank, so she ignores and downplays their experiences. As a result, the pair become the best of friends, spending most of their time together. Even as they get old enough to follow along behind their aunts and uncles as they go about their days, they still stick together. Once they can shift, it separated the twins as they learn about their adult responsibilities. Rafi starts off learning to hunt for the pack and care for their sheep. Meanwhile, his sister learns how to spin wool and weave from her mother. Still, he is fascinated by his grandfather, Julio’s work with horses, and begs him for the chance to learn. Viewing his as a disgrace, but hoping he might someday be useful, he allows him to help care for the horses.

As he grows older, Rafi’s grandfather trusts him more, and starts to teach him how to handle and even train their horses. The others his age still bully and isolate him, but he pretends not to care anymore. Maria also grows into her role as a Rojas woman, being neatly absorbed into the day-to-day lives of the other women. The twins remain close as ever, but they branch out and form other relationships. When they are about a year and a half old, Maria ends up mated to one of the higher-ranked males of the pack. Though he celebrates, Rafi also resents her, because he knows he will never find a mate within the pack. The pureness of blood is the be all, end all of a male’s rank in the Rojas pack, and affects the rank of everyone else in their family. No female would lower themselves to mate with someone with any coyote blood. The skill and wealth of a female are just as important, but rank dictates the life of future pups more than anything else.

Rank also plays a vital role in the next big event in his life. Shortly after his sister’s mating, Rafi works with a young mare, training her to pull a cart. It’s the very first time he has ever trained a horse by himself, and he is overjoyed. Though he never expects to have a mate, his life is taking a turn for the better, when she colics out of the blue. The death of the mare spends the end of the life in the pack, as she belonged to the son of the pack’s second in command, who blames him. There is nothing his family can do, and he is exiled from the pack with only the clothes on his back and what few supplies his sister can sneak him.

Hugely resentful and determined to survive, Rafi gets as far away from the pack as possible. He is also desperate to prove, at least to himself, that he can handle any horse. He sets out to catch and tame one of the wild horses in the area. After a lot of trial and error, he finally catches a young grulla stallion and works at taming him. It takes several months of hard work and dedication; he breaks him to ride and calls him Jefe. Once he can trust him, they travel further east. Though there are struggles and mistakes along the way, the pair eventually form a tight, close-knit bond. Over the next couple of years, they travel further along the coast, headed east the entire time, eventually arriving in the Souls area.
