Jaguar was born a non-Luperci, and left at the site of his birth for an unknown reason. Witnessing his abandonment, a self-proclaimed voodoo queen by the name of Bondye, took him in and raised him as her own. She named him Jaguar because of the purple-black splotches on his tongue.
On his first birthday, when he expressed an adult interest in being like her, she shared her blood with him in ritual and turned Jaguar into a Luperci. They lived in an abandoned prison with a fanatic coven of witches, pagans, and vodouists; and though he never practiced himself, Jaguar is fascinated by the art and religion.
Bondye experimented on Jaguar, namely by coating his tongue in medicines (read: toxins) that would hopefully return it to a natural color. The only thing that became of those experiments was Jaguar losing his sense of taste. Her untimely death when he was three, drove Jaguar out into the world on his own. He seems bound by whim alone and doesn't seem to have a particular reason for doing anything.
It is upon immediate impression that he is a solitary creature, but consistently traveling with him are a mentally unstable coyote? and a vainglorious fox?.

1. Appearance
1.1 Basics
EssentialsFeline and feral by presence alone, Jaguar seems to be a direct manifestation of the creature he was named for. Everything about him is sinewy and elongated, pointed at his ends with a spiked mass of fur in the middle. Though not particularly brawny, there is no mistaking the brute strength of him. He is completely pitch, though in certain lights a chocolate-red reads through the perpetual blackness. The only other variance to his fur are the multiple scars along his body, exposing the dull pink of his flesh beneath. This, coupled with his almond-shaped eyes, broad shoulders, and consistently exposed upper canines, Jaguar has a certain menace about him, which brutally contrasts his intellectual manners. He wears two necklaces at all times and prefers to be bare, but on certain occasions will wear an orange jumpsuit made for a smaller man or a straitjacket. His eyes are yellow-green, shiny and acidic like poisonous sunflowers.

2. Personality
The Anti-Hero · Rage Suppressor · Stoic Woobie · Sour Outside, Sad Inside · The Caretaker
- Irritable, Serious
- Perpetually grumpy, he doesn't seem to find very much joy in life. He rarely smiles and finds it hard to understand or relate to anything humorous.
- He finds it hard to waste time. Every second counts in Maverick's world, and though he acts as if he would be better off dead, in all actuality he tries very hard to live.
- The kid needs to loosen up.
- Mistrustful, Lonely, Sensitive
- Maverick does not warm up easily. He aggressively shies from relationships out of fear of getting emotionally abused. He is easily offended and tends to put too much stock in "word of mouth".
- Though he typically acts as if he doesn't want to be bothered, he will rarely chase another off. This unusual trait seems to stem from his innate desire for company.
- Selfless, Daring, Unhappy
- The guilt from abandoning those who raised him has carried over into a hero complex. He finds it very hard to leave someone in need. He is level-headed and incredibly steadfast during crisis, consistently risking life and limb without a second thought.
- He carries the weight of the past on his shoulders, and a deeply personal hurt he hardly ever shares aloud. Maverick prefers to suffer in silence.
- Capable of carrying the burden of others with ease, he tries not to let others know of his own troubles.

5. History
5.1 Pre-'Souls
Sven Mikaelson, the Alpha of a small familial band of wolves, fell in love with a roaming wolfdog -- a gypsy by the name of Desdemona. After several months of courting, she chose to stay with him and his family, wanting to bear his children. Marrying, she quickly became pregnant, which proved difficult for the older woman who had never bore before and had lived her entire life as a nomad. All but one of the pups was born dead, and she cradled her only son in her last hours before passing herself. Desdemona called him Maverick.
Resultant of his father's resentment and depression, Rick was raised under the surrogate care of his aunt Yuka and her servant (lover) Ea Felt. Though only a passive participant in the boy's rearing, Sven was vicious with his son, brutally punishing him for the merest slights and abusing him as often as they crossed paths. He lashed out at Maverick drunkenly on several occasions, giving him permanent scars rather than mere bruises.
A failed hunt shortly before Rick's first birthday sent his father on a rampage against him, during which he killed Ea and permanently disfigured Yuka when they intervened. Maverick fled his pursuing father for weeks thereafter before losing him indefinitely, and to this day harbors the guilt of leaving his "mother" behind.
He became harsh and independent, well-versed in defending himself (with an added hero complex) but made by and large into a mistrustful and unsociable creature. He struggles with personal grief and the acceptance of others, finding loneliness and physical pain easier to deal with than loss and heartbreak.
Maverick traveled alone for an entire year, encountering several misadventures and a singularly tragic love, before a flash flood forced him to rescue a barely-weened pup. After a (short) unsuccessful search for her parents, he began calling the girl Dragonfly (since she could not recall her own birth name) and the pair of them became inseparable.
