1.  Appearance

Decker may have blundered into New Dawn as a filthy, ragged tangle of fur, bones, and vitriol, but despite his lingering pessimism, pack life has brought with it outwardly improved health, allowing him to display his natural appearance. His coat, at the least, has filled out somewhat, providing a natural resistance to cold he hadn't known in months, though it remains lightly disheveled as he hardly finds time to look into personal grooming.

Even well-fed and rooted down, Decker is a thin and wiry little thing, noticeably (though not significantly) smaller than most wolves his age. His scarce build accentuates his somewhat angular, ghastly and slightly shrewd visage, and effectively hints at his outstanding agility and speed. A life spent on the run - literally, for the most part - has toned his legs noticeably, suggesting he carries the endurance to back up his lightness of paw.

He is never seen without his trusty red bandana, made of a bit of faded picnic cloth. Tied round his neck, it serves as a symbol of his occupation (albeit an often ineffective one), and has multiple uses, namely as storage for herb gatherings. Decker's common use of his bandana for stashing medicinal ingredients has given it a permanent, pleasant herbal scent that changes slightly depending on what herbs he's been harvesting. He also uses it as a facemask to shield his nose or otherwise conceal his snout.

As of 3/8/14, Decker now sports a series of long, jagged scars from his cheek to his nose, a wound from the New Dawn bear hunt.

Lupus form is Decker's preferred form, as he was raised and trained to heal as a natural wolf.

Decker has never deliberately assumed Secui form.

Decker despises Optime form, and avoids using it whenever possible, only assuming it when he fails to suppress his Verto-induced shifting urges, which have diminished by now.

1.3  Other

Modifications

  • Piercings: None. "Ma' would friggin' kill me."
  • Tattoos: None.
  • Scars:
    • Right hindquarter; light scar running across rump; accidentally sliced himself deeply on a tree branch when on the run from some loners. Hardly visible. Pre-'Souls.
    • Right half of face; three deep, jagged scars from jawbone to nose and one minor scar just before the nose; injury from New Dawn bear hunt (End Of His Reign).

Accessories

  • Decker's faded red bandana never leaves his person without very good reason. It is typically worn around the neck, but it can go over his snout to serve as a medical facemask or odor shield.

2.  Personality

Though Decker is a prodigiously talented healer, his experiences have left him socially and emotionally numb. Convinced every pack he tries to settle with will either run him off or accept him for a brief period before dissolving out from under him, structures like rankings or heirarchies are seen by him as ultimately temporary. As such, he acknowledges them, but not without a crippling dose of cynicism.

His bedside manner has deteriorated right alongside his optimism, reduced to blunt, often pessimistic assertions. His advice is accurate, however, and he will enforce treatment procedures staunchly - even if that means threatening the patient with the consequences of their disobedience. His work as a healer is the one thing Decker takes most seriously. Past events be damned, lifesaving is his priority above all else; under the heavy layers of snark and vitriol, he cares deeply for his patients, and will not tolerate interference in matters of healing.

After the 3/8/14 bear hunt, Decker's overall disposition has improved visibly, having regained confidence in New Dawn's permanence and his own reasons for existing. His suicidal tendencies have ceased, and he's more prone to attempting to be "approachable."

2.1  Nicknames

Decker has a very hard time remembering names, and so he labels every wolf he meets with a superficial nickname which they may or may not object to.

2.2  Ideals

Interests

  • Likes: Healing, talking, singing, his bandana, nicknaming people, Killer, Chief
  • Dislikes: Horses, Luperci, Optime form, running, being asked to sing

Traits

Lethally cynical, unfeeling, coldly professional

  • Outlook: Pessimistic
  • Expression: Jumps between being a motormouthed extrovert and a contemplative introvert depending on the situation. Never afraid to speak his mind.
  • Alignment: True Neutral pre-scar; Neutral Good post-scar

Fears

  • Having a patient die under his care
  • Horses
  • Dying slowly
  • Losing his pack (Post-Scar)

Motivations

  • Abiding to his personal healer's code
  • Reuniting with his family in the afterlife
  • Secretly wishes revenge on the wolf that infected him
  • Loyalty to his pack (Post-Scar)

Biases

  • Species: All are equal under a healer's care.
  • Non-Luperci: Envies their purity.
  • Gender: Has been taught to overlook petty discrimination such as gender.
  • Sexuality: Is quick to tease those interested in the same sex, but holds no serious bias either way.
  • Age: Dislikes young children and has very little patience for them.

Sexuality

Once a deadset abstinent, after the events of the March bear hunt, Decker's new, broadened perspectives have lead him to become mildly interested in romantic persuasions. Despite his snarky-yet-professional exterior, he is almost comically underinformed when it comes to intimacy and romance, having spent his entire adolescence in varying states of trauma and withdrawal.

Substances

After witnessing his birthpack being slaughtered before him and escaping with his mind in turmoil, young Decker turned to natural drugs such as mushrooms to help mitigate the trauma. After coming down from a trip to find himself trapped in the embrace of a stranger that infected him with the Luperci virus, he swore off all recreational substances for as long as he lived. Post-scar, he retains this view, being totally uninterested in any druglike substances.

Spirituality

Decker is thoroughly convinced that whatever is up there, he/she/it/they want to see him squirm. He attempts to defy the gods through displays of numbness and lethargy whenever possible, figuring that if he stopped reacting to the torture, they would become bored and move on to some other sap, or better yet, kill him off so he could finally escape the mortal realm. This belief is reinforced by various random acts of what can only be defined as 'slapstick' (falling off small cliffs, running into trees, etc.) Post-scar, this hasn't changed, although whatever has been tormenting him this long is eagerly taking advantage of his newfound self-confidence to kick him around a little harder.

3.  Relationships

3.1  Key Relations

  • None

3.2  Family:

  • Mother: Deceased
  • Father: Deceased
  • Siblings: One sister, likely deceased

3.3  Minor Relations

  • Killer (Altair Amarok): The first Dawner to greet him after Zalen welcomed him to New Dawn. Having teased him numerous times, healed him of grievously infected leg wounds, and been threatened by him should Decker's past come back to harm his family, Decker considers him a friend.
  • Chief (Zalen Damaichu): Alpha of the pack he swears himself to. Started out viewing him as more of an equal than a leader, violently cussing at him when the Alpha saved his life by yanking him out of a shallow river, and otherwise regarding him the same as he would any other wolf. Post-scar, Decker is more outwardly loyal, and keen to view Zalen as a friend and a proper leader.
  • Twinklepaws (Fayne): Pre-scar, viewed as an overly compassionate acquaintance at best, occasionally projecting his fuming hatred at the world around him on her in futile attempts to seek help for his deteriorating mental state. Post-scar, Decker sees her more as a fellow healer, an equal partner in the healing arts.

4.  Interaction

  • Speech: Carries a very thick and very fast Bostonian accent. It tends to amplify his snark factor.
  • Scent: Always has an herbal scent about him that varies slightly with the seasons. Strong scent of New Dawn with a trace of dry snow.

4.1  Residence

  • Decker spends most of his time keeping track of the Medical Hut's supply stocks. He's developed a tendency to sleep here rather than the communal den.

4.2  NPCs

The Stranger

  • Species: Canis lupus
  • Age and DOB: ???
  • Description: A shady man from Decker's painful, traumatic youth that had taken advantage of the young healer and forcefully afflicted him with the Luperci virus. Decker can't recall anything about him, other than that he was definitely male, definitely bigger than him, and definitely a Luperci. Even post-scar, Decker secretly wishes to exact revenge on the Stranger in the most painful fashion he can imagine.
  • Personality: ???

4.3  Abilities

Strengths

  • Healing (Master): Decker's self-proclaimed reason for existing. From the moment he was old enough to learn, Decker displayed prodigious talent in the healing arts, only growing wiser and more effecient as he aged. It is also arguably the only aspect of him that has improved because of his traumatic youth; being kicked around different packs his whole life meant he could train under different healers, learning far more than he ever could by staying with one pack. He is deadly serious when it comes to this skill, as well, tolerating zero interference in healing procedures from any source.
  • Evasion (Journeyman): The second thing Decker picked up very, very quickly. His diminuitive size and build made survival as a loner a daunting task, to say the least, and so he spent much of his adolescence pushing the limits of his endurance and agility to escape from nearly every threat a lone wolf could possiby face.
  • Foraging (Journeyman): Learned naturally alongside healing, with some bonus experience from scrounging as a loner.
  • Combat - Lupus (Apprentice): Though his formal training in combat amounts to nil (he prefers flight over fight), his studies in healing and anatomy have bestowed upon him knowledge of subdermal nerve clusters, or 'pressure points', which he can apply sharp, prolonged pressure to in order to subdue nasties or rowdy patients. Also, loner experience has taught him one thing about combat: go for the eyes.

Weaknesses

  • Decker is socially numb, which makes conforming to pack customs and rules difficult. His acidic disbelief in the permanence of pack structure can easily come off as hotheaded insubordination.
  • Though able to keep up a sprint for an impressive distance before tiring, his physical strength is lacking severely; manual labor exhausts him fairly easily.
  • Despite it supposedly coming naturally to him, Decker lacks fine dexterity in Optime form, and is stubbornly reluctant to use his 'mutant' forms.
  • Decker is incapable of remembering names, instead assigning susperficial nicknames to those he meets.
  • He is a horribly clumsy hunter and knows little about stealth other than that his white coat blends easily with snow, resulting in his emaciated appearance when Zalen first encountered him half-drowned in a shallow riverbed.
  • The extensive trauma he has suffered so early in life has had profoundly negative effects on his mental health; he is prone to hearing a disembodied feminine voice and witnessing vivid hallucinations of deceased pack members or relatives. Post-scar, the voices have hushed and his madness appears to have ebbed, but his mental state continues to deteriorate gradually, and he is prone to occasional night terrors and minor hallucinations.

4.4  Inventory

Items

  • His trusty faded-red bandana, perfect for stashing small objects and herbs and all sorts of other things. Always around his neck or over his snout unless lost or being used as an emergency bandage.

6.  History

Brief (1-3 paragraphs, sparsely detailed) overview of character history. Sie likes to repeat this section in the character's forum profile, since it's the shortest and easiest to parse for someone just browsin' over the forum profile.

6.1  Timeline
