Dale's Adoptable #8

This character is open to adoption under a Permanent Contract With Certain Conditions. You have free reign to choose, edit and modify any of the traits listed here, or even the design of the character itself. Once you claim the character as yours, it's yours, and you are free to put them up for adoption to someone else at any time. If not, you may drop, kill them off, or NPC them as you please. With this said, there are some additional rules to this adoptable's contract, compared to some of my others:

  • This character requires an RPer of a higher writing level than most if they are to use the personality provided. Chaotic Neutral and Evil characters can be highly disruptive to a game in the wrong hands, so there will be discussion beforehand to see if interested RPers understand what playing this character entails. Experience with prior 'Souls characters is suggested.
  • The character will not be used in a way that violates anyone's personal boundaries or triggers another RPer knowingly or is disruptive to the game or a board. Anyone who abuses this character in play will be blocked and banned from claiming any more adoptables or designs by Dale.

If the character's personality is to be changed from Chaotic Neutral/Chaotic Evil before playing, then the above terms will not apply and the adoptable will be under a Relaxed Permanent Contract instead. If interested, please contact Dale via PM on their OOC account.

1.  Possible Character Names

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. They're simply ideas for an adopter to look at if they can't think of a name they like for this character.

Male:

  • Hiver: A French masculine noun meaning "winter".
  • Hygerof: An Old English kenning, derived from the masculine noun hyġe and the adjective rōf, meaning "strong-minded" or "magnanimous".
  • Nevado: A masculine Spanish adjective that means "snowy" or "snow-white".

Female:

  • Montaña A Spanish word meaning "mountain", and also one of the 50 states of the United States of America.
  • Tempête: A French feminine noun meaning "tempest" or "storm".
  • Thryth: An Old English feminine noun and kenning that means "strength", "power", or "force".

Gender-Neutral:

  • Baelketh: A name that means "guardian of the wind" and created using a D&D elf name generator.
  • Icelight: A rare, poetic English word that refers to light reflecting off icy surfaces or ice.
  • Sempitern: A poetic English word that means "everlasting" or "eternal".

3.  Personality

This character has voluntarily given up on lawful society and order. Either they have been convinced or come to the conclusion that all laws are corrupt, and it is better to live a life unfettered. They are temperamental, selfish, and driven by their own need for freedom and control. That being said, they are not wholly without conscience, and will struggle with doing ill or wrong against their kin. This being said, there is little that they value anymore, and there isn't much that is holding them back from that final leap into darkness. This is a character that, with the right influences, can find redemption and balance in the world..or be pushed to into becoming mindlessly, heartlessly feral.

This character, if they had a D&D alignment, would be Chaotic Neutral leaning into Chaotic Evil. From most to least importantly, they believe that they:

  • Shall seek unlimited power over others and unlimited freedom for themselves, beause they refuse to be under the control of anyone or anything else
  • Shall harm those who protect the weak or honor laws, because it's a dog-eat-dog world and you have to be willing to get dirty
  • Shall not betray others unless their life is in jeopardy, though they are very iffy and flexible when it comes to the definition of "betrayal"
  • Shall not aid the weak, though they might feel enough guilty to begrudgingly help the odd person
  • Shall honor no authority above themselves, because there are some ruthless and powerful enough to be respected (or at least feared, in private)

In regards to their alignment and their behavior, they are, from most to least likely, to:

  • Consider themselves above the law, as the law - and by extension, its makers and rulers - are inherently corrupt and unworthy of following
  • Use any means necessary to evade justice, simply for the sake of survival
  • Believe people deserve the treatment they are willing to endure, as how others let the world treat them shows how much respect they deserve to have
  • Be unconcerned with the desires of family members, as they may experience guilt or hesitation when doing something that brings them harm or ill
  • Believe luck determines wealth, as only the foolish or naive believe that luck will save them in the end

Adopters are free to retcon, completely rewrite, or disregard any of this in favor of their own ideas.

4.  Talents and Faults

To help flesh out a potential path for this character, a selection of randomized strengths and weaknesses has been made using Joe Larsen's Character Faults and Talents system. These are only suggestions for this character, and you are free to use, retcon, modify, or disregard these ideas as you please.

Talents:

  • Good Combat Reflexes: This character acts and moves fast in battle. They are swift to dodge, parry and void another's attacks. When an ambush is at hand, they strike quickly from their hiding place. They specialize in rushing or overpowering a foe with their swiftness, and may frequently use knockdown tactics and the element of surprise. Few can get the drop on them when it comes to making the first move in a fight.
  • Mentor: This character has a knack for teaching others. They know how to break down concepts into more understandable terms. They give clear instructions and make detailed examples for others to follow from. They are quick to learn whether a pupil understands through doing, hearing, speaking or seeing, and adapts their teaching style accordingly.
  • Natural Composure: This character functions well in a crisis or difficult scenario. When faced with fear or horror, their nerves are steeled and their composure remains intact. They are able to make rapid decisions in life-or-death situation, and they won't immediately break down, panic, or lash out when tested or cornered.

Faults:

  • Cynophobic: This character has a fear of dogs and dog-heavy hybrids. They are visibly nervous and on edge when around canines that are explicitly dogs or have a doggish appearance. Sometimes their own appearance in the mirror or other reflective surfaces unnerves them. They may suffer a panic attack if they are surrounded by or in forced close proximity to a doggish canine. The most severe reactions may be extreme anger or violence to get away from a dog and can't be controlled. A good article on phobias vs. normal fears can be found here.
  • Deep Sleeper: This character sleeps like a rock. They are difficult to wake, and stealth is easy to use around them when they slumber. Only strong smells, very loud noises, or rough physical contact can stir them to wakefulness. When do they wake up, they take at least two to three posts to become fully alert, and are sluggish and slow to respond during that time. They may not process information or danger very well while in this groggy state.
  • Slow Healer: This character is slow to heal. Cuts, sores and contusions may take as twice as long to heal compared to other canines, and injuries like broken bones or severe burns may cause permanent damage or pain. This character is likely to scar repeatedly, and may suffer from keloids or fibrous adhesions.

5.  Relationships

This character was an only child, or perhaps the only survivor of a litter. Their mother was unavailable for most of their childhood, either because of illness, death, or because the mother was away or unprepared for a child. The character's father, father-figure, grandparents and/or pack elders did most of the work raising them, and may have been a large influence in shaping the character's worldview. The character would've been born into a small pack, and may have lived in a "traditional" pack structure, leaving only when they were old enough to find a mate. They may or may not have found a relationship of some kind, and would be open to ideas such as polyamory, open relationships, and mate-surrogacy. They may not be good at childcare or raising children, but likely would try to be supportive or influential in an adolescent or adult child's life.

There are a number of open territories you can use as a place of origin for this character, or create backstory and ties to. Good examples for this particular character include Chesapeake Bay, El Malecón, Rivière-aux-Graines, and Portland. The on-board settlement of Amherst may also be a good option.
