Dale's Adoptable #24

This character is open to adoption under a Relaxed Permanent Contract. You have free reign to choose, edit and modify any of the traits listed here, or even the design of the character itself. Once you claim the character as yours, it's yours, and you are free to put them up for adoption to someone else at any time. If not, you may drop, kill them off, or NPC them as you please. All I ask for is a vague outline of what you plan to do with this character so I can pick a good first fit.

If interested, please contact Dale via PM on their OOC Dale account.

1.  Possible Character Names

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. They're simply ideas for an adopter to look at if they can't think of a name they like for this character.

Male Names:

  • Farran: A rare English name derived from French and meaning "iron gray".
  • Tûrac: A name meaning "king". It comes from the name of JRR Tolkien's character King Théoden in Rohirric, which was created from/adapted from Old English for the Lord of the Rings saga.
  • Vídhir: Variant spelling of Víðir, an Icelandic name derived from Old Norse meaning "willow" and related to the Swedish name Vide.

Female Names:

  • Aina: A name found in various cultures and with varying meanings, including (but not limited to) "mirror" in Kazakh, "always" in Finnish, and "sight, scene" in Latvian.
  • Khitāriel: Roughly constructed from JRR Tolkien's Primitive Elvish conlang for his Lord of the Rings saga, its approximate meaning is "she who is high and misty", "fog queen", or "queen of mists".
  • Wierzba: A Polish word for the willow tree or any member of the Salix genus.

Gender-Neutral Names:

  • Blaithelf: Constructed from Noldorin, one of JRR Tolkien's fictional languages in his Lord of the Rings saga, the name roughly means "fog-pelt" or "gloomy pelt".
  • Osier: A member of the willow family whose twigs are used to make baskets or a term for several types of American dogwood. It's also the name of a couple of American towns and has been used as a surname.
  • Tempys: Derived from the High Valyrian conlang of GRR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, it roughly means "light", "light gray", "light", or "light-colored" and comes from the word timpa.

3.  Personality

This character possesses a quiet dignity and grace about them. Few things they do aren't done without some sort of careful planning or thinking. They are seen rather than heard, a wallflower in the background of every important scene. It's not hard to make them submit, and they're overwhelmed by energetic, dominant people. They don't voice their opinions readily, and despite a regal and wise bearing, they lack any means or want to lead. Instead, they wait and watch for their part, ever questioning if it's right for them to act. They may learn many secrets others don't wish to share, but hold their tongue unless times are dire. Ever observant, they take what they know to try and act a step ahead, finding it difficult to work in tandem. A loner and an omega, they try not to have others understand them or draw them out from the calm face they hide behind.

This character, if they had a D&D alignment, would be True Neutral with a few hints of Neutral Good. From most to least importantly, they believe that they:

  • Honor those that honor them, as they will respect those who respect them
  • Not promote an extreme viewpoint, as nothing good ever comes from extremes
  • Bring evil-doers to justice, but realizes they don't always "get their man" and can be uncertain of acting against someone considered "evil"
  • Shall aid those who aid them and harm those who harm them, but is far less likely to harm someone than to try and return a helpful favor
  • Shall lie only to evil-doers, but has lied to good people more than once for their own safety, needs, and protection's sake

In regards to their alignment and their behavior, they are, from most to least likely, to:

  • Provide for friends and allies, but expects to be repaid or compensated for
  • Not harm others for profit, as they are no hired thug and wish no harm upon others
  • Keep their word and considers their word their bond, not easily making promises or oaths to others
  • Believe people deserve the treatment they endure, but will object to slavery or the abuse of others
  • Feel guilt whenever they commit a wrongdoing, but will struggle with and be afraid to admitting their wrong in case they're harmed

4.  Talents and Faults

To help flesh out a potential path for this character, a selection of randomized strengths and weaknesses has been made using Joe Larsen's Character Faults and Talents system. These are only suggestions for this character, and you are free to use, retcon, modify, or disregard these ideas as you please.

Talents:

  • Good Balance: This character has a well-developed sense of balance. They don't get sick on sea or cart voyages, and heights and high places are easy for them to navigate. A tightrope or narrow strip of land wouldn't be hard for them to navigate, and rarely do they fall or trip as they move.
  • Natural Charm: Despite this character's introverted nature, they have an approachable and grounded air that puts others at ease. They have a talent for getting strangers to open up to them, and their empathetic nature helps others let their guard down. This character has a way of getting what they want with people and convincing others they're not a threat.
  • Silver Tongue: This character has a knack for lying and presenting facts eloquently and persuasively. They can make a bad idea sound good even if they're not the most diplomatic of people. Whatever they say they present in a way that people want to believe is true and trustworthy.

Faults:

  • Aichmophobic: This character has a fear of needles, knives, and other sharp objects. They are visibly nervous and on edge when around these objects or anything that looks sharp. They are unable to handle sharp objects without being nervous or anxious, and may flinch when faced with claws or teeth (even their own). They may suffer a panic attack if they are surrounded by or in forced close proximity to anything sharp. The most severe reactions may be extreme anger or violence to get away from a sharp object that can't be controlled. A good article on phobias vs. normal fears can be found here.
  • Poor Timekeeper: This character has trouble keeping schedules and staying on time. They are often late to something or forget to do things on time. They may have difficulty organizing their day, and also may require prompting in order to get things done. Unless they write down and stick to a time-table, or unless they have someone reminding them to stay on track, their entire schedule will be scrambled. They also may be a poor judge of or have a poor sense of time, and will take longer or shorter periods of time to do something than they should.

5.  Relationships

This character is (or was) very close to their mother and the women of their family. Their primary caregivers were their mother and/or their maternal grandmother. Their extended family was a major influence in their life - cousins might as well have been siblings to them. Unfortunately, they got along with only a few (or perhaps none) of the men in the family, and prefer female company. They often played the role of "the shy child" or "the quiet child", and were rarely in trouble. They haven't had many friends or love interests in their life, and find it hard to have more than a few connections. If they do find any companions or lovers, they'll be far and few between and unlikely to be "unconventional". (E.g. polygamy, friends with benefits, pup surrogates, et al.) The character may not be comfortable with such concepts, or is at least unused to them.

There are a number of open territories you can use as a place of origin for this character, or create backstory and ties to. Good examples for this particular character include Dublin, London, Portland, and Warsaw. The on-board settlement of Amherst may also be a good option.
