Basics

Lupus form: Normal (verging on tall) mixed breed, with white and yellowish-cream sable markings. His long fur makes him keen on temperate to colder climates, and he avoids heat at all possible. Bright blue eyes, soft pink nose and paw pads. The broadness of his chest and upper torso, plus the sharpness of his long, thin muzzle, implies some sort of majority sheltie background, though his dense spitz-like fur and his straight terrier-like posture show the generational offshoots. Whatever the exact mix is, he’s visibly less than 10 percent wolf. His body is lean and balanced, and he carries himself with a hell of a lot of confidence - chest puffed, hips swinging. His coat and attitude make him ill-suited for stealth. He takes this form when tasks require it of him.

Clothing/Accessories:

• His left ear has been pierced in three places, and he most often wears a chained violet helix-lobe piercing.
• One half-capelet, blood orange (dyed from bloodroot), wrapped over his left shoulder and secured with a pin bearing the Dye Studio emblem. Calan often wears this.
• One old, rough-spun wool cloak, designed for practicality over style. Calan wears this in the winter months.
• One rich, violet (dyed from red cabbage) wrap with a subtle brocade. Calan wears this for special events, and fastens it with a cloak pin.

Optime form: Taking great pride in standing fully upright, with his hair neatly brushed and braided into one, chest-length braid, Calan’s a pretty boy and he knows it. He takes an obscene amount of time to groom when in this form; any odd tufts of fur are neatly trimmed to match the length of the rest of his pelt, and you could swear his chest fur is back combed for volume. He feels very comfortable going around without clothing, but will often dress up in fine attire when he’s feeling flashy. Favourite colours: deep purple and gold. Up until very recently he wore a simple gold pendant, but this was sold for his starting supplies when he was kicked off of his family homestead. Since moving to New Caledonia, he lives in this form almost exclusively.

Interaction

• Speech: High lyric, sing-song tenor, with a haughty, WASP-like tone. His inflection can make him sound quite feminine. He carries no prominent French accent in his English speech or vice versa, having grown up in a bilingual community.
• Scent: Patchouli, mint, salt, natural dyes, and often a tinge of alcohol or sex.
• Quirks, Gestures, Etc.: He has a tendency to play with his hair when in Optime form.
• General Posture and Body Language: Calan struts around with a peacock-like confidence; chest out (and often fluffed for effect), hip cocked, arms delicately crossed or hands resting at his hips. He is often touchy in a flirtatious or conspiratorial way.

Spoiled: Calan is used to getting what he wants, whether from his friends, his family, or his lovers. He’s not ashamed of feeling materialistic. He draws the line at being greedy, however - he has seen how much an unstoppable hunger for more has corrupted those in his parents’ circle. In his opinion, greed only leads to bad choices. Just because Calan has a taste for the finer things in life doesn’t mean he’ll resort to stealing (or worse, begging).

Outwardly easy-going: Unafraid to be the life of the party or the punchline of a joke, Calan thinks disdainful comments are like flies - annoying, but easily swatted away. It takes effort to get under his skin, unless you’re really cruising to upset him. This free spirit might not always truly reflect his inner anxiety, but it’s a part of him all the same. Easy ways to tick him off: clinginess, pressure, insulting his mother.

Accepting of others: He couldn’t care less if you’re Luperci, non-Luperci, or you’ve got three eyeballs. Calan’s mingled them with them all, both in his younger years and since being on the road. It takes a lot to shock him.

Anxious: Having suffered from anxiety all of his life, mostly stemming from the impossibly high pressure his parents pushed on him, Calan can be terse, temperamental, selfish and snappy when under duress. His solutions for high-stress situations are to push everyone away from him, act petty and critical, and burn bridges.

Law-Abiding: Even if he procrastinates, sloughs off his duties to another, or genuinely just doesn’t seem to care, Calan’s not going to go out of his way to break rules. He just.... might fudge them to make them better work for him and his ideas, much like he did as a kid. No harm, no foul. And... yes, he may be a bit lazy too, but he’d never admit it.

Non-confrontational: If it’s not obvious by now, Calan’s not really much of a fighter. He relies on his words and his bribery to win him battles, not his hands. He’s a confident wordsmith with a silver tongue, but it’s clear from his pretty face that he‘s avoided brawling when possible. He’s got enough street sense to avoid getting himself killed (you don’t sleep around without getting in a few jealous fights here and there), but that’s about it.

Generous: Especially with his time and resources. Even if he’s not the golden boy any more, Calan‘s quick to give what he has to others around him. It’s his way of both giving and receiving love. This means, however, he has little sense of when he’s abusing the generosity of others.

Self-destructive: Picking up new lovers at a drop of a hat, drinking himself into a stupor, creating impossible standards for himself only to fail to meet them: Calan doesn’t know how to be kind to himself. This leads to him being unwilling to form deep attachments to others. He is known for quick hookups without wanting a serious relationship, and keeps his cards close to his chest.

Sexuality

Openly pansexual and promiscuous, Calan is willing to try everything at least once. Sex is a physical activity between two consenting partners, and carries none of the romantic connotations it does to others. He’s an enthusiastic and communicative partner, but runs away at the first sign of commitment. His openly flirtatious style has gotten him in trouble, but he’ll never push anyone to do anything they’re uncomfortable with.

Spirituality

Calan is mostly agnostic and definitely spiritual, but could be persuaded to be more religious by the right person. He’s put very little thought into what he believes about the afterlife, other than he hopes he doesn’t have to find out soon.

Substances

While alcohol is his drug of choice - his favourite drinks are anything strong and sparkling, like a whisky fizz - he’s tried a variety of recreational drugs in the past. He’s a huge fan of party drugs and stimulants, and fine with hallucinogenics. So far he’s avoided opioids and disassociatives, worrying he’d get too easily hooked (and he’s probably right).

Strengths

• Valuation (Accomplished): Hand Calan anything that you want to sell, and he’ll be able to give you a fair assessment of its worth. His particular interest is in jewels, but he can also inspect precious metals, fabric, clothing, rugs, and pottery. He was in the process of learning more about rarer goods (ivory, fine leathers, pearls, spices) when he left home.
• Negotiation (Accomplished): When general apathy isn’t holding him back, Calan can be quite a convincing haggler. He’s pretty confident in his ability to sell or trade... most of the time. He mostly uses this to ‘negotiate’ with others to come back to his bed.
• Singing (Adept): He'll never admit this, but he's actually got a nice set of pipes. You'll have to ply him with a few drinks to get to hear his singing voice.
• Horsemanship (Adept): Though he has no skills in horsecare or purchasing livestock, Calan knows his way around a saddle. He's capable of riding harder-to-handle horses, but isn't looking to do more wrangling than he absolutely has to, and has little desire to get dirty in the stalls.
• Tailoring (Adept): After his time at the Dye Studio, he's learned how to hem, press, and construct garments. He feels comfortable making simple items, plus can handle some more intermediate pieces, but still struggles to take his original ideas from the page to the mannequin.
• Hairstyling (Basic): Knows his way around a few basic cuts, but is learning more and more with each passing day.
• Knife Skills (Basic): If you can call ‘knowing where to stab for maximum pain’ a skill.

Weaknesses

• Laziness: His general desire to do as little as possible often aggravates those around him and leads to him getting yelled at by authority figures.
• Stealth: If the white coat wasn’t enough, Calan’s not the best at sneaking up on people, or using subtlety to get what he wants in life.

Notable Relations

• Fennore was one of his first friends upon settling into New Caledonia, but after a recent drunk slip-up, Calan's been relegated to the doghouse. He misses their easy connection, and wants to try and repair this bridge as soon as he can.

• Bellad Songthorn forced his way into Calan's life one sick day, and even though he may have been a little less than grateful at the time, the two have formed an unlikely friendship. This was further enforced when the two survived a sudden cave-in at the Underthing, managing to duke it out for two days before they were rescued. Bellad has proven that, though they may not agree on the means to the end, he is a trustworthy companion in a crisis - and a damn fine healer, too.

• Toraberā Tanaka is Calan's disgruntled trader friend who he's always happy to share a drink with. He and Tora both got their ears pierced together, and if that's not a sign of friends forever, I don't know what is. The two can often be found chatting about various trade and pack gossip, and plan on opening their new businesses in the same building.

• Wither Rose Soul saved Calan from drowning in a frozen river, once. Now they have an... interesting friendship. There's a lot of tension there that's waiting to be released.

• Oliver Landry is Calan's on-again, off-again lover. The two share a casual relationship that comes in fits and bursts, depending on how much Oliver's schedule allows him to be in New Caledonia. Oliver is a lot more serious about the relationship than Calan is, but seems fine for the moment to accept that it can't be anything more serious.

Part One: Searching for a New Home (Sept - Nov 2019)

Having travelled south from Quebec, Calan, alone and aware of the fast-approaching winter, travels his way east in search of somewhere to call home. He encounters various loners along his trek, but none from any packs to which he has any interest. Along the way, Calan goes on his first hunt, and equips himself with some basic training and survival supplies. After meeting the introverted and resourceful Woodsmoke, the two make plans to travel north together, aiming for a pack Woodsmoke had heard of before: New Caledonia.

Part Two: A New Life (Nov 2019 - April 2020)

Calan arrives to New Caledonia in time for winter to hit, and begins his life in the new pack. After meeting most of his packmates - a ragtag group of wanderers and refugees, not dissimilar to himself - he works towards fulfilling his promise to King Iomair: to provide riches to their new land. Things don't go as smoothly as he planned. The new pack has little that's not a gift from the Salsolans, leaving him with equally little to sell. That, plus Calan's general inexperience on the road, lead to him exploring more profitable ways to expand New Caledonia's trade network. After a fatal river crossing that nearly ends his life, Calan decides that peddling his wares like a common merchant is not only socially humiliating - it’s genuinely dangerous. His fear of drowning now endorsed, he takes to staying closer to New Caledonia and avoiding any travel that would force him too close to water. After partitioning off the front half of his personal residence, he establishes New Caledonia's first proper store in the heart of the Town Square. He also starts to come up with his next ideas for what he can do instead - for what even is a trader if they’re too scared to trade?

Part Three: A New Enterprise (April 2020 -

Realizing he needs to turn his life around after a sloppy-drunk encounter with Fennore that severely strains their friendship, Calan goes on a hunt for his next personal project. This leads to him stumbling over the abandoned town of Haven, and a new idea forming - why not create a new business? With the King's permission, Calan strikes forward with a proposition: a new dye studio to help increase New Caledonia's wealth and prestige. He also joins the New Caledonia Trading Company. After its opening in May 2020, the Dye Studio starts to produce high-quality clothing for trade and wear, many of which make their debut at the founding Feast later that season. Late summer also marks two major expeditions: a week off to party at La Estrella Roja with Wither Rose Soul and company, and a promising trading convoy to Charmingtown.
