Born with a single, adored, younger brother to a single unwed mom, Caden had a relatively pleasant childhood. Despite their rocky start to life, Sophia worked hard to keep them fed and happy, and though that meant that she wasn't around much, at least they never starved. Still, at some point as he grew from a puppy into a young adult, Caden began to grow angry. His fury infected the entire family, and they fought often. The worst part, Caden realized much later, was that his mother did the best she could, and he had very little to fault her for considering the circumstances of their upbringing. By the time he forgave her for their tumultuous fights and lack of presence in the home, she had already passed away. Perhaps this was, in fact, the trigger for that realization.

Gambling was a vice he'd picked up when he was no more than a puppy. Some might even have said that he was a puppy. The dice and the cards dug their claws in him young and they dug their claws in deep. Unlike his brother, he never was able to quit. When the world caught up with him, too fast for his brain to catch up, and suddenly threats were being made and his life was in danger in a way it never had been before, Caden took the cowardly way out. His brother had wealth. He'd worked hard for it. Caden gave them his brother's name.

But he hadn't expected them to kill him.

Caden ran. He ran from his brother's widow, he ran from his debts, and he ran from the knowledge that he was responsible for his baby brother's death. Time seemed to stop in the time between fleeing his home and the moment he gathered the strength of will to return. Despite that, it was a long time before he set foot in that town once more. Older, no more wise, definitely more strung out, and certainly harder. He'd barely been there two days, still working up the courage to visit Agnes and her sons, before the younger boys came running up to him.

"You've gotta leave," they said, and they hated him—he could see it in their clenched fists and the way they spoke through gritted teeth—but they had come running to warn him anyway. "You gotta run and ne'er look back. Lyn heard 'bout you being here and he's on a rampage—he's out for blood. Already killed three, hurt more'n that, and just 'bout killed ma."

Caden ran.
