They believed that this spirit protected the natural balance of the world, whether that be for the benefit or disadvantage of any species. However, they would often pray to this spirit asking it to grant them good health and hunting grounds. They believed that certain beings were favored more by the spirit than others, mainly predators. They felt it was something similar to a sin to kill those things they viewed as more favored. Bastien and his siblings were taught these beliefs by their parents and had little reason to doubt that it was true.

Bastien Rivière was born in Mer Bleue. He was part of a large litter born to a solitary pair of coywolves. He and his six siblings were raised 'traditionally' in this area untouched by the Luperci virus. During his childhood they were a mostly nomadic family, avoiding territory disputes but also trying to hold on to good hunting grounds when they could. Though they were a large family, they were often outmatched in fights against wolves and were not above running away when the odds weren't in their favor. Despite this frequent conflict, the coywolf family held no ill-feelings toward wolves, understanding that it was all just a part of nature.

Despite being a very traditional pack, the Rivière's held a belief in what they called "The Spirit". Nothing notable happened to the family until October of the pups' first year. They were 7 months old and had been accompanying their parents on hunts for a couple of months. During a hunt they had spread out to surround the prey but somehow Bastien got confused and ended up getting separated from the rest of the family. His absence was not noticed until after the kill was brought down and consumed. His family left the site of the kill to look for him, hiding the carcass a ways off so that other predators wouldn't steal from it. Bast saw only the blood in the dirt and the smell of his family, particularly that of his youngest sister Adelaide when he arrived. He licked the ground to taste the blood and then went looking for the rest of the kill. Between when he stepped away from the blood and when he found the kill, something happened. His mind went blank and then filled with images of him ripping Adelaide's throat. He looked back at the blood on the ground and then tasted the blood on his lips, his mind telling him that it tasted like his sister.

Believing that he had killed Adelaide, Bastien fled, scared of what the rest of his family would do when they found out. He traveled west, through Montreal, and then onward toward Nova Scotia. He made no connections during the journey and took the alias of "Vi" to conceal his identity should his family follow his trail.

6.1  Timeline

2013

• March: Bastien and his eight siblings are born. Two out of the nine die before they are a month old.
• May: Family leaves original den site.
• June: First hunting lesson.
• August: Begin hunting as a family.
• October: Bastien thinks he has killed his sister, Adelaide, and flees. He heads west, toward Nova Scotia.
• November: Bastien arrives in Nova Scotia.
