Tripoli

1.  Description

Tripoli is a large, decaying city on the coast of northern Africa. Despite Tripoli's position in the Mediterranean and potential to be a pivotal trade city, it is overshadowed by Algiers in general. Despite this, it remains a rather important area, as there are few other viable places to live along this stretch of coastline. Boats aren't an extremely common sight in this port; though they don't actively avoid Tripoli, its low trade market as well as aggressive attitude toward outsiders keep most traveling tradesmen away from the area.

The city itself is sprawling, encompassing a much wider territory than just the small metropolis, which is mostly in decay. There are few buildings still in a livable condition, and the surrounding countryside is harsh, providing few opportunities for canines to seek prey. Prior to the demise of humans, some of the surrounding territory was utilized as cattle and sheep pasture -- though there are still some small populations of formerly domesticated animals, it is not nearly enough to support the population of Tripoli alone.

Outside of Tripoli and its surrounding territory, the arid, desert-like countryside is extremely harsh and unforgiving. Most of the country is covered in the Libyan desert, arguably one of the harshest places on earth. There are few other places of note until one reaches either Algiers of Cairo, excepting the rare place such as the Siwa Oasis, an oasis about 80 km (50 mi) in length and 20 km (12 mi) wide to the east of Tripoli by some distance.

2.  Culture

Life in this area is extremely harsh -- few canines are kindly toward strangers, and most canines seek to leave this area as soon as possible, heading west to Algiers or east to Cairo as soon as possible. Few speak kindly of Tripoli once outside its borders. Few canines make a permanent home in Tripoli; most jackals frequenting this area choose a nomadic lifestyle, traveling from Algiers to Tripoli and then on to Cairo and back again for most of their lives.

Many of these jackals make stops in Tripoli, and thus the population often flucates. Nomadic canines correlate to Bedouin tribes -- they are extremely close-knit and care primarily for their nuclear family, mirroring the traditional cultures found in these people. Agricultural pursuits -- e.g., the raising of camels, sheep, and other ungulates -- has not become popular in this area yet; horses and other transportation animals are rather rare. Most canines of this area speak Arabic.

2.1  Species

Variegated jackal, Egyptian jackal, and Algerian jackals make up the majority of the population here, with the Variegated jackal being the most common. They have adapted the most readily to the rough way of life in the desert oasis, and as such, most Variegated jackals living within the city possess a large amount of pride about their history and heritage, considering themselves above not only their jackal cousins but their larger wolf cousin species, as well.

Wolves are rarely seen in this city -- the jackals are generally much less kindly to their cousin species. The rare wolf that is seen in Tripoli is invariably an Iberian wolf, some skilled and bored sea-farer with nothing better to do than investigate a desolate and unforgiving city. Unlike many other cities, dogs are an infrequent sight -- the vast majority of them were killed off rather quickly by their wild Jackal cousins after the demise of humanity, and those that survived either left or were absorbed into the resultant jackal populations.

3.  Significance

  • Tripoli is a stopover for and has some trade links with Algiers, Athens, and Cairo. Wolves that pass through Tripoli often head to Algiers to find more opportunities and acceptance there.
  • Tripoli is sometimes hit on its outskirts by the infamous Kermesian raiders. The raiders will also strike at people traveling to and fro from the city.
  • The Arena family of Onuba has trade links in and a trade route going through Tripoli.
  • Abeni was born and sold into slavery in Tripoli.
  • The Krokaran common genet NPC Fiero spent some time adventuring through Tripoli.
  • Freyja Savoy once traveled to and lived in Tripoli.
