1.  Description

Based in the ruined and partially flooded remains of Nelson, Nevada. Since the founding in 1999, life has somewhat returned to the barren landscape, with the Luperci residents creating simple housing structures and a few ceremonial public buildings. As the land is made up primarily of desert and scrubland, it remains quite warm all year round, even with the cooling effect of the seasonal rains that wash down from the mountains. Nakzhi is built around five families, and outsiders are not easily allowed into the ranks without reason.

2.  Significance

With a strict policy on outsiders and psychological reasoning as to why they shouldn't go, members of Nakzhi rarely leave for any other part of the world. Outsiders are not readily allowed to know information about Nakzhi, nor are they allowed within the commune itself, so information about the culture is not known to the rest of the world unless disclosed by a member who had once lived within it.

2.2  Characters

  • Krystalle Horzana was born here; she left in 2008.
  • Koralo Santos was born here; he left in 2009.
  • Anchjo Horzana, head of the Horzana family, currently lives here, leading The Way.

3.  Culture

At first glance, Nakzhi's sex-and-drug indulgent culture might seem vaguely familiar to any contemporary 'hippie' culture. It's entirely made up of very close family groups that, while splitting into various different surnames, are almost indistinguishable from one another as far as interaction and love. Their perception of outsiders, due to intensive teaching during youth, are that those who don't originate from Nakzhi are 'bad'.

3.1  Species

The population is primarily dog/wolf hybrid. Due to the cattle and sheep that were once kept in the wider vicinity, Herding dogs are the exclusive population of Canis lupus familiaris blood within Nakzhi. Varying types of wolf crop up, usually centered around certain family names; for example, the Horzana family is primarily red wolf, while the la Belle family takes their genetics from Mexican wolves.

Luperci

All members of Nakzhi are Luperci; they shun non-Luperci creatures, due to a feeling of superiority over them. This bias also leads them to predominantly use their Optime form, regarded in Nakzhi as Salician; within Salician form, they learn to hunt, eat, craft and have sex.

Due to close proximity to Mexico, geographically, and the influx of Mexican wolves with the la Belle family, the majority of Nakzhi speaks either with a Spanglish flair or in the more American Chicano style. Neither are incorrect within the borders of Nakzhi culture. Perfect English, or other languages, often denote someone of outsider descent.

Residence

Due to prior flooding of Nelson, Nevada before the absence of humans, the Children took refuge in higher grounds toward the mountains. Their homes are made very simply, usually from plant life or remnants of human structures found after the waters washed them away. There is no complex construction within the commune, due to a lack of basic construction skills and no models to base their designs from. The dry weather enables them to live comfortably in minimal surroundings.

Technology

Luperci within Nakzhi have no technological advances, using crude tools. They fabricate much of what they use from things found in the rubble of Nelson, from simple axes to books to needles for tattooing. Large scale items are unheard of, and minds that can conceive such things usually belong to creatures who were once outsiders. Nakzhi-born Luperci have archaic ways of crafting.

3.3  Structure

A free populace, led by one leader (called The Head) and a council of four underlings. The Head is usually the head of the largest family, and the council is made up of the heads of each lesser family.

Relations

Tightly-knit within Nakzhi, the commune regards outsiders in highly unpleasant ways. They group up as one large, intertwined family with several different surnames, breeding freely with other families as well as their own blood relations. It takes a Herculean effort for those born outside of Nakzhi to be accepted into the fold, but it's not unheard of to find a creature from another pack or place within their family.

  • Maribel Santos was born in San Solace?, but found herself in Nakzhi after a difficult and rigid test of her faith.
  • The first head of the la Belle family was an outsider from southern California, accepted into Nakzhi after the same rigid test of their faith.

3.4  Religion

The Way is a radical bohemian faith, built by the Horzana family before Nakzhi itself was founded. Called The Children, practitioners of this faith adhere to a sex is love lifestyle from very young ages, using mind-altering drugs to teach their children the same beliefs and disowning or killing those who don't comply. Once Nomadic in nature, their prime deity chose Nakzhi as their settlement in mid-1999, speaking through the prophet-leader of the family clan.

Deities

The Children are considered polytheistic, worshipping more than one deity, but have a singular lead deity who gains much more prayer than the rest.

  • Alessci — The supreme deity of The Way. Also called Mother Alessci, The Flower of The Way and The Sweet One.
  • Noa-buja — Son, brother and lover of Alessci. Noa-buja is seen as God of the desert winds. Also called Father.
  • Melephesa — The rain. Melephesa is an agender deity believed to promote fertility in the world.
