1.  About

A city located on the shore and within sight of great mountains, Montpellier was a prosperous town even before it became a hub for Luperci. It is a trading port where a touch of the "old world" has resurfaced, falling into a fuedal state where matters are settled by local law and conflicts, alliances, and intregue lurk in the narrow, winding streets.

2.  Geography

Located six miles from the coast of the Gulf of Lion, Montpellier is a city built on a pair of rocky hills and bordered by a river. Traveling north, one will encounter great sprawls of farmland before reaching the the Cévennes.

2.1  Landmarks

Place de la Comédie

Though there is no true government within Montpellier, the leaders of the area will often meet and use this square and its buildings to meet and discuss matters of importance. During festivals, this area and its well-maintained park become a shining example of the grandeur of the city. Perhaps not so unexpectedly, there seem to be quite a collection of gaurd-type Luperci to be found in this square.

Écusson

The historic center of the city, now a gathering place for merchants and tourists. Many of these buildings remain as they were intended -- mansions (hôtels) where wealthy families do their business. The Porte du Peyrou, a triumphal arch built at the end of the 17th century, is located in the center of this.

The Rue du Bras de Fer (Iron Arm Street)

A specialized street where material goods like leather, metal, and the like can be found. Several arms and armory shops can be found along this stretch.

The Jardin des plantes de Montpellier

The oldest botanical garden in France, founded in 1593. It is run by a "neutral" party in the city which manages access and use.

Rue de la Barralerie

This quarter of the city hosts a Mikveh dating back to the 12th century.

The Saint Pierre Cathedral

An old structure that acts as a polestar for the Catholic community within the city.

The Tour des Pins

The only remaining of 25 towers of the city medieval walls, built around 1200.

The Tour de la Babotte

A medieval tower which was modified in the 18th century to welcome an observatory.

The Châteaux

A number of so-called follies, built by wealthy merchants surround the city during the times of man. Many of these have become landmarks, and several serve as meeting places for unsavory criminal types.

2.2  Climate

Montpellier is a very temperate place – peaking in temperature around July (24°C / 74°F) before dropping in the winter season (7°C / 45°F) – though generally humid and windy. It rains more often during the winter seasons, especially in October.

3.  Culture

Montpellier's culture is a mishmash of influences, owing to the city's role as a trade port. A great variety of people come through the area constantly, though one does not need to look hard to see the proper citizens of the city. Symbols and colors of Houses, the appointed term for family packs, flank street corners and the members themselves. Most Luperci wear clothing and display their connections and wealth, sometimes making opportunity easy to spot to the more cutthroat types lurking in the narrow streets and seedier neighborhoods.

  • Language

French is the most commonly spoken language in the area, followed by Occitan, Arabic, and Hebrew. English is regularly taught to “upper class” residents, though many traders will know some amount of this. A variety of other languages can be heard at the docks.

  • Technology

Advanced and hungry to expand their knowledge and skills, the residents of Montpellier are well-versed in various subjects. Everything from mansonry to blacksmithing is practiced, and sailors and farmers rub shoulders with tailors and painters. Overall, in most cases, Montpellier is highly advanced in terms of its technology.

  • Species
    • Dogs (extremely common) most frequently are of landrace bloodlines. Traits in mongrels and “purer” bloodlines are likely to include the following breeds: Beauceron, Berger Picard, Briard, Great Pyrenees, Poodle, and Pyrenean Shepherd.
    • Wolf Subspecies: Gray Wolf (extremely common), Italian Wolf (less common), Iberian Wolf (rare)
    • Jackals: European Jackal (extremely common), Syrian Jackal (less common), Algerian Jackal (less common)
    • Coyotes (extremely rare) are often mistaken for jackals or wolf-hybrids.
  • Social Structure

Families are tight knit, and often large. Montpellier locals consider themselves better than foreigners and traders – some will display this more openly than others, though usually not when conducting business. They are organized into "Houses", which often consist of a singular family and their in-laws, though some are more open to accepting newcomers than others.

Generally, younger canines will respect their elders, though this does not always last into adulthood. Children are regularly chosen for their roles based upon the skills they show aptitude in, though many may be assigned roles based upon their class and desires of their family.

  • Laws and Crimes

A House is responsible for their own matters; there is a general knowledge that “an eye for an eye” stands firm, and often can lead to violence and deaths. No foreigner may be allowed to leave the city if suspected of any crime.

  • Punishable Crimes
Theft
Assault and murder, except in the case of self defense
Kidnapping/Illegal Detainment
Property vandalism or destruction
Trespassing
  • Spirituality

There are several growing religious sects within Montpellier.

  • Catholicism: Easily the most significant number of the populous follows this belief system. There is an emphasis on duty, spirituality, and lots of conflict between those unwilling to accept the “true” God. Catholics come in all sorts, and range from some of the wealthiest families to the poorest urchins.
  • Islam: Secondary in size, but first in trade connections, the followers of Islam have made themselves wealthy and built a strong, dynamic collection of imports. They are suspicious of outsiders, though often build connections in the name of business.
  • Judaism: Not far behind in terms of connections or size, the Jewish population of Montpellier boasts one of the most close-knit communities in both family connections and locale.
  • Folk Magic: A strong but small collection of these practitioners spread out from a singular point along the coast. They are mysterious people with growing influence.
  • Less Prominent:
The Red Dragon: Though they will not call themselves a cult, this group is bordering on becoming such a thing – a collection of men with various connections to and interest in devious pursuits. Hedonists to the core, they present a questionable and often-changing rhetoric. Nevertheless, their numbers continue to remain steady and slowly grow, especially as they attract new recruits.
Other: With so many traders coming through the area, many various spiritual practices are passed along. A singular Buddhist temple is located in the city, and shrines to various sea and wind deities and spirits can be found nearer the coast.

4.  History

Montpellier fell into ruin after the fall of man. In the years after the apocalypse, as Luperci became the norm, they advanced quickly. The city and its surrounding beaches became places where Luperci gathered to fish and live, eventually growing in size and spreading deeper into the sprawling city. Overgrown parks and gardens became pockets where prey animals ventured, and closer to the mountains and forests hunting became easy and prosperous. As trade became more common, and families settled deeper into their lifestyles, emerging packs – taking to calling themselves Houses and carrying the same surname – became powerful leaders within the city and its surrounding areas.

The arrival of a woman named Mab de le Poer, the long-lost-heir of the de le Poer castle, Exham Priory, and her growing family put into motion conflict between many old Houses...
