Flat terrain and poor drainage have led to the formation of a bog in the lowlands of southern New Brunswick. Interspersed with a complex network of forested islands, this wetland is of high importance for biodiversity and provides for a distinctive assemblage of flora and fauna. Although the bog itself is extremely wet, the surrounding lowlands feature long, dry summers that often spark forest fires.

Such fire-adapted softwoods as black spruce, jack pine, and eastern cedar and, to a lesser degree, hardwoods like paper birch, red maple, and white poplar are common trees found throughout the bog, while peat moss, sedges, bog-myrtle, swamp rose, cranberries, and cloudberries are among the many other types of vegetation that can survive the acidic, poorly draining soil.

Rich in biodiversity, Canaan Bog also serves as an important habitat for a vast selection of wildlife. Beavers can be found here, as well as moose, caribou, such species of nesting shorebirds as the greater yellowlegs, the great egret, and the great blue heron, a species of butterfly called the bog copper, and a host of aquatic species able to thrive in the bog.

Due to the presence of acidic tannins and the anaerobic nature of peatlands, Canaan Bog has the unique ability to preserve organic materials, such as wood, tallow, and even the bodies of animals, with remarkable results.
