1.  Premise

We've seen the future and there will be heavy storms smacking the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick areas in early and mid-March, resulting in floods! Those of you suffering from SoSuWriMo burnout will have February to take it easy and recover a bit, but hopefully you'll be rested enough to deal with impending weather disasters in March!

2.  Event Timeline

  • March 1-3: Drizzly, misty weather. Lots of clouds, but only mild rainfall.
  • March 4: Loud thunder starts around 4am along with light rain which gets steadily heavier as the morning progresses. Hits downpour weather around noon. About 6 inches of rain fall between 4am and midnight.
  • March 5: Rain gets more mild around midnight, but still continues steadily into the night. Lets up around dawn, drizzles/mists into the morning, sun comes out just after noon and clouds disperse by evening. ~4 inches of rain for the day.
  • March 6: Skies stay mostly clear.
  • March 7: Clouds begin to gather again in the early afternoon. Drizzly/misty weather start up again in the evening.
  • March 8: Thunder returns around 2am, but weather is still just drizzly/misty until about dawn, when suddenly it's downpour weather again. Downpour remains for the rest of the day, along with really strong winds. Another 7-8 inches fall between dawn and midnight.
  • March 9: Rain becomes milder around dawn, but the heavy winds don't let up. Rain slows to a drizzle by evening, but the winds keep at it. 4-5 inches of rain for the day.
  • March 10: Rain has stopped but it's still pretty overcast/cloudy and super, super windy.
  • March 11: Drizzly/misty weather. Winds let up suddenly around early evening.
  • March 12: Light rain in the morning, about 1 additional inch. Skies clear by late afternoon.

3.  Territory Damages

The varied terrain of the Maritime Provinces mean different areas see different kinds of damage, and some areas are hit harder by the rain and floods than others.

  • All lakes and rivers see significant increases in water levels and coastal areas see a rise in dangerous waves and tides. It's highly likely that structures left near such areas, including boats, canoes, cabins, and even fencing, see heavy damage from flood waters and debris being carried in those waters.
  • On the western end of Nova Scotia, much of Fellmore Swamp and Serena Reserve experiences heavy flooding, with some areas stuck under six to twelve inches of standing water for days.
  • The ground in the Ethereal Eclipse and the Dampwoods become drenched and marshy, but most of the damage comes from the high winds, which knock over several small and medium sized trees and smash primitive wooden structures.
  • All human cities, including Halifax, the Concrete Jungle, St. John, and Amherst flood on March 8th and the the cities' crumbling sewer systems overflow, spewing years-old rot and debris into the streets. Heavy winds sweep through the broken windows of buildings, scattering even more trash. This makes for a putrid combination and the smell of wet decay lingers over the cities even as the water slowly drains away. Suburban areas, like the Skeletal Sanctuary see the roofs of many houses cave in and collapse.
  • The many rivers of the Withered Realms all flood, drenching the nearby forests and foothills. This may all be for the better though, as the area is still recovering from the years-ago fire...
  • While most of the Miramichi Wilderness experiences some flooding, the Miramichi Watershed and Miramichi Valley are hit hardest, along with parts of the Wabanaki Coast, as area's abundant rivers and streams all overflow into the forests and wind blasts branches off trees. Much of the debris, large and small, is carried downstream on the St. John's River towards the Bay of Fundy, making the waters especially treacherous.
  • Mountainous regions are the least affected by the storms, as waters all run downhill and tall peaks protect structures from the heavy winds. Still, some areas around mountain streams are damaged as heavy debris is carried downstream, and a few of Halcyon Mountain's caverns and mining tunnels flood.

3.1  Pack Impacts

  • AniWaya (AniWaya Flood Plot): saw many of their huts get washed away. As a lake-heavy territory, there was a great deal of flooding of the rivers.
  • Inferni (Inferni Flood Plot): saw flood damage to the land closest to the bay and its many rivers, as well as minor structural damage. One member died when a building collapsed.
  • Krokar (Krokar Flood Plot): saw moderate flooding from the river and lakes in their territory. Some buildings, particularly the Ail Po Farms barn, were damaged and a majority of the livestock escaped from washed-out fences. One goat perished in the floods.
  • Vinátta (Vinátta Flood Plot): saw only minor structural damage to most of their buildings but had to evacuate their livestock to higher ground when Grand Lake flooded. One member was injured when she became trapped beneath a tree branch and two puppies required rescuing from a sinkhole.

4.  FAQ

With the floods, would mosquitos be a huge problem afterward? It doesn't seem like many people role-play anything insect related be it parasites like worms, fleas, or something like pesky, blood sucking mosquitos.

The floods are happening in March, so it'll still be extremely cold. The real life forecast for March is mostly below freezing with flurries and snow. For our purposes, temperatures are above freezing so we'll have rain instead of snow, but it will still be too cold for most pests, so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Most neutral territories will probably drain out by the end of the month and not have standing water for a long period of time, but city buildings with basements could possibly retain water for longer, and that might lead to some pest problems come spring or summer.
