Maverick is the only child of Sven Mikaelson and his late wife, Desdemona.

Because his mother died as a result of his particularly difficult birth, Sven became an unfit and willing parent, passing the task of surrogacy to his sister Yuka and her lover (read: servant) Ea Felt. Maverick was abused throughout his youth by his father, and when it nearly led to his death, the yearling fled.

With young independence came harshness, a seriousness he has a hard time shaking, and you are left with a drab and suspicious wolf. Maverick pretends to be friendly, but has an inner monologue that consistently narrates his true cynicism. He is well-versed in defending himself, with an added hero complex, but is made by and large into an unsociable creature that is almost wholly due to mistrust.

He struggles with personal grief and the acceptance of others, finding loneliness and physical pain easier to deal with than loss and heartbreak. It sometimes drives him to madness. Maverick traveled alone for an entire year, encountering several misadventures and a singularly tragic attraction, before a flash flood forced him to rescue a barely-weened pup. He and Dragonfly have been inseparable since.

  • It would not be uncommon to catch glimpses of Maverick and Dragonfly in the midst of neutral territories.

1.  Appearance

1.1  Basics

Essentials

Though tall and heavy, as his primary heritage would suggest, Maverick exhibits a few doggish traits in his conformation, chiefly in the tapered extremities he inherited from an array of maternal ancestors. He has thick fur, soft and longer than average, that lies flat except where it spikes slightly around his shoulders and neck.

With a square chest and broad shoulders, the hybrid is streamlined and well-formed. His frame tapers slightly into a leaner waist and a body that has clearly been conditioned by a solitary lifestyle. With a raging metabolism, his ribs can easily be felt beneath the deceitful cloak of his fur.

He is multi-colored and bears countless scars—only a handful of which are visually discernible—retaining a perpetually shaggy and unkempt appearance in all forms. Maverick never takes off his two necklaces, and has (nearly) shoulder-length hair when he shifts.

His eyes are expressive. A deep and rolling shade of teal blue hiding green, like glass orbs remnant of a mythic lagoon.

  • Humanization: Low to Moderate—with a preference for practicality.

 Paradiso (#3D8794)
 Melanie (#E2B6CC)

Modifications

  • A deep, horizontal scar on his left side, sitting under his rib cage and running from stomach to back
  • MONA is carved large and messy across his left bicep
  • Bite marks at the base of his throat, slightly to the right
  • Four very faint claw marks on the left side of his neck, the topmost scar following just under the line of his jaw
  • A full jaw-print on the back of his left thigh
  • Missing index finger on left hand/paw
  • Burn scar on the inside of his right wrist that has been modified into the stylized scarification of a serpent swallowing the sun
  • Countless small scars across his body, hidden mostly by fur
  • Small nicks on his fingers, from wood-carving

Adornments

Maverick has a minimalist look, carrying very little with him unless absolutely necessary. In Optime he will typically wear pants and almost certainly be armed, but the only thing he never takes off is his necklaces.

Forms

Lupus

115 pounds ( kg) · 35 in ( cm)

  • Wolfish and solid, appearing doggish only in the pattern and length of his fur.

Secui

199 pounds ( kg) · 44 in ( cm)

  • Hunchbacked, Maverick is a broad bull of a creature in this form, and favors it for fighting and hunting large game.

Optime (Preferred)

265 pounds ( kg) · 6 feet 8 inches ( cm)

  • A finely built form, crafted from a life of abuse and an intensely lonely survival.

Interaction

  • Speech: Maverick has a medium tone, potentially low depending on how loud he's talking; a la Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He was raised speaking French and the collective dialects of Nordic languages as a child, but learned English from Ea and used it consistently to infuriate his father who couldn't speak it well. He has grown to use English by default, and (mostly) effectively hides his former accents.
  • Scent: Bark, pine, tree sap, stone, riverbeds, and Dragonfly.
  • General Posture and Body Language: Stiff and uninviting -- closed off. He crosses his arms a lot and generally looks displeased. Also a sloucher, he seems to curve in on himself except when he thinks someone is observing him, then he will force himself to appear more confident than he actually is.
  • Quirks, Gestures, Etc.:
    • In Lupus he licks his forearms when he's lying down. It soothes him.
    • He cracks his knuckles a lot.
    • Maverick will flinch at sudden movements, a finely tuned reflex from his childhood.
    • He only sleeps comfortably on his stomach.

2.  Personality

Sociopathic Hero · Rage Suppressor · Took a Level in Cynic · Stepford Smiler · The Caretaker

  • Irritable, Serious
    • Perpetually grumpy, he doesn't seem to find very much joy in life. His smiles seem empty and he finds it hard to understand or relate to anything humorous.
    • Maverick does not like to waste time. Every second counts in Maverick's world, and though he acts as if he would be better off dead, in all actuality he tries very hard to live.
    • He is inwardly sarcastic and scathing; mostly detached from his feelings -- except perhaps anger. The kid needs to loosen up.
  • Mistrustful, Duplicitous, Lonely
    • He does not warm up easily. He aggressively shies from relationships out of fear of getting emotionally abused.
    • Though he always seems to think very little of his company, Maverick will pretend to be interested in conversation and will even emote despite not being able to understand the use of emotions. This unusual trait seems to stem from his innate desire for company.
    • Maverick fakes emotion but will avoid verbally lying if possible.
  • Selfless, Daring, Unhappy
    • The guilt from abandoning those who raised him has carried over into a hero complex. He finds it very hard to leave someone in need. He is level-headed and incredibly steadfast during crisis, consistently risking life and limb without a second thought.
    • He carries the weight of the past on his shoulders, and a deeply personal hurt he hardly ever shares aloud. Maverick prefers to suffer in silence.

2.1  Ideals

Traits

Hypocritical, misguided, sad, protective, and grumpy

  • Outlook: Pessimistic
  • Sociability: Medium -- he hides the fact that he detests (almost) everyone very well.
  • Expression: Typically frowny, unless feigning a lighter emotion
  • Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Motivations

  • Surviving
  • Not being hurt (emotionally)

Fears

  • His father

Spirituality

Maverick has no faith to speak of. He tends to believe that life is governed my mere chance and (good or bad) luck.

Biases

  • Gender: Thinks females are the devil and males are their demon puppets
  • Age: Dragonfly has made him fear/hate children, because he thinks he raised her to be a terrible person

Sexuality

  • Kinsey 1: Predominantly heterosexual, only incidentally homosexual.
  • Demisexual "...does not experience sexual attraction unless they form a strong emotional connection with someone."
    • Previous heartbreak has made him incredibly wary of expressing his honest feelings for another.

Interests

  • Likes: Dragonfly
  • Dislikes: Everything and everybody else

Substances

  • Under Ophelia's influence, Maverick became addicted to tobacco and smokes at least twice a day.
  • Avoids alcohol and other substances because he remembers how violent his father became after indulging.

3.  Relationships

* Does not know this person by name.

3.1  Family: Mikaelson

  • Mother: Desdemona
  • Father: Sven Mikaelson
  • Siblings: —
  • Ward: Dragonfly
  • Extended:
    • Aunt/Surrogate: Yuka Mikaelson
    • Uncle-in-Law: Ea Felt

3.2  Relations

Key Relations

  • Dragonfly is the pup he rescued during a flash flood. While he is the one who saved her life, she is the one who saved him from a perpetual life of bitter loneliness.

Positive Relations

  • Yuka and Ea, his paternal aunt and her slave-mate respectively, raised him as a child and tried to protect him from Sven's madness. He regrets abandoning them.

Neutral / Negative

  • Sven is Maverick's father, who became abusive after his birth caused Desdemona's death. He tortured and mutilated his son until nearly killing him just after his first birthday. Maverick's nomadic life is contingent on the idea that his father still hunts him.
  • Ophelia Hemlock led on the young and naive Maverick before breaking his poor little heart.

Minor Relations

  • Sex: —
  • Friendly: —
  • Enemies: —
  • Murders: —

4.  Skills and Flaws

4.1  Abilities

Combat

  • Education and Learning: Physically abused by his father, Maverick had to learn at a young age how to fight. Because he could never defeat Sven, he developed his defense before offense and is considerably more apt in the former.
  • Feral (Master): He is best fighting on all fours with tooth and claw.
  • Close Range (Journeyman): Brute strength makes him a decent opponent, but he is not well-practiced.
    • Weapon skill: Knife, Dagger
  • Long Range (Apprentice): Very unskilled.
    • Weapon skill: Spear, Throwing Knives
  • Has a high threshold for physical pain. There aren't a lot of things that hasn't been done to him already.
  • Fights like a Beserker, relentless and furious. Hulk Smash, bro.
  • His willpower is incredible and his reactions are reflexive rather than determined.
  • If his skills can be honed, Maverick would be a fantastic fighter.

Hunting

  • Education and Learning: More out of necessity than practice, Maverick has become an exceptional hunter.
  • Tracking comes particularly easy to him. He is familiar with all signs of prey and can tell if an animal is sick by footprint alone.
  • He is infallibly patient when awaiting the "right moment", making hims fairly accurate.
  • Maverick has exceptional hearing and relies on it heavily. He often just closes his eyes and listens.
  • He usually hunts in feral form though has recently been adjusting his practice to accommodate weapons.

Skinning & W0od-carving

  • Education and Learning: Maverick once witnessed a trader whittling a horse out of wood, and has since taken up the practice as part of his silent, ritualistic venting. His skill in skinning prey devolved from this.
  • Usually makes abstract shapes out of stripped bark, since it is the motion of cutting that soothes him, but he is just as capable of making animals and the likeness of others.
  • He skins almost every kill with varying degrees of precision depending on how agitated he is -- another outlet for his repression.
  • Endures small nicks and cuts on his hands.
  • Concentrates wholly on cutting, enters an almost trance-like state that is difficult (and ill-advised) to rouse him from.

4.2  Weaknesses

Physical

  • Tobacco is not Maverick's friend. His lungs are compromised, and though he has yet to show any symptoms, he is (unknowingly) genetically predisposed to cancer.
  • His scars ache in the cold, making him quite stiff if he doesn't stretch before action.

Mental

  • Maverick has sociopathic tendencies. He finds it difficult to relate to others and will actively pretend to care if only to fit in or keep his inner disassociation at bay.
  • Though he feels very little, his actions might suggest otherwise or even imply that he wants to feel something.
  • His childhood abuse has manifested in him a sense of suppressed rage that expresses itself in tiny nuances (i.e. aggressive wood-carving) or completely when he is alone. Maverick is incredibly prone to overkill.

5.  History

5.1  Pre-'Souls

Sven Mikaelson, the Alpha of a small familial band of wolves, fell in love with a roaming wolfdog -- a gypsy by the name of Desdemona. After several months of courting, she chose to stay with him and his family, wanting to bear his children. Marrying, she quickly became pregnant, which proved difficult for the older woman who had never bore before and had lived her entire life as a nomad. All but one of the pups was born dead, and she cradled her only son in her last hours before passing herself. Desdemona called him Maverick.

Resultant of his father's resentment and depression, Rick was raised under the surrogate care of his aunt Yuka and her servant (lover) Ea Felt. Though only a passive participant in the boy's rearing, Sven was vicious with his son, brutally punishing him for the merest slights and abusing him as often as they crossed paths. He lashed out at Maverick drunkenly on several occasions, giving him permanent scars rather than mere bruises.

A failed hunt shortly before Rick's first birthday sent his father on a rampage against him, during which he killed Ea and permanently disfigured Yuka when they intervened. Maverick fled his pursuing father for weeks thereafter before losing him indefinitely, and to this day harbors the guilt of leaving his "mother" behind.

He became harsh and independent, well-versed in defending himself (with an added hero complex) but made by and large into a mistrustful and unsociable creature. He struggles with personal grief and the acceptance of others, finding loneliness and physical pain easier to deal with than loss and heartbreak.

Maverick traveled alone for an entire year, encountering several misadventures and a singularly tragic love, before a flash flood forced him to rescue a barely-weened pup. After a (short) unsuccessful search for her parents, he began calling the girl Dragonfly (since she could not recall her own birth name) and the pair of them became inseparable.
