1. Basically...

Luisa is a young girl who has just arrived to the Maritimes. She has spent the past few months on a boat and living off of scraps, treated more like a pet than anything - having been sold to a traveling merchant as a hunting hound. Unbeknownst to anyone onboard the ship, one of the other hounds was actually a Luperci in hiding; they kept to their Lupus form and made their way across to North America. After a few scuffles with this stowaway Luisa got caught in a bad fight. After nearly dying at the teeth of the stranger, she managed to survive - activating her ability to shift - and the ship docked. Her first shift occurs on her first day in the New World, on her birthday, and it is the ensuing chaos that leads to her escape from the merchant.

Prior to arriving in the New World, Luisa lived with her father Melcior. She does not know of her father's history of abuse regarding her mother, but has some idea, as he was always a volatile man. The history of the family is rooted to a settlement upon the Spanish coast, where Melcior ruled. He often send out his pack members in the form of a raiding party and they would return with riches for him, or women, or even hunting dogs. On one such day approximately two years prior to Luisa's birth, the raiding party came back with just that - trinkets and gifts galore. Along with money and valuables they claimed to have found a family of wild dogs which could easily be trained up as hounds for Melcior. The bitch the party produced for him was a fine-boned thing, thin and wiry, but she had potential. Melcior named her Agata (for the color of her eyes) and prized her above all other things, for a time.

Gradually he became fixated on the idea of Agata in her true form. To Melcior, this meant she would have to become like him (a Luperci), and he was all too pleased to force the change upon her. He shifted in to his lupus form and attacked her. Being physically stronger and bulkier, it was an easy fight - but it went farther than that. He did not know until later, when Agata began to grow fat with child, that he would be a father. She gives birth to two hybrid children and Melcior is furious. First he kills the messenger who brings word of his favorite hound squirreling herself away for the birth - then he turns upon those closest to him, exiling raid members and attacking Agata herself when she comes near.

He does not hurt the children though, and decides to wait and see if they will shift. Perhaps their mother's beauty was passed on to them? So he waits, and the children mature. His daughters Josefine and Luisa are treated with great care (although they are not blind to the abuse their mother suffers). After six months, seven months, eight - neither girl shifts. Melcior is once more infuriated. He turns upon Agata and, in his rage, kills her. He tells the girls that she has left them for another man, and though they are young, neither of them believe such a heinous lie. They begin to plot their own escape from their father at that point.
