Laurier Fauchelevent

Laurier Fauchelevent (pronounced loh-ryay fowsh-lu-vohn) is the daughter of an Australian Shepherd dog named Claude and traveling wolf Din, making her a member of the Sadira and Benoît Fauchelevent families. She and her siblings were born mid-August 2011 on the southeastern coast of the United States, and were primarily raised by their French-speaking aunt Paquette. After separating from her family to travel, Laurie came to The Outpost in early 2014.

Laurier is a wolfdog of medium build, with the thick double coat of fur her herding ancestry granted her. Her arctic wolf influence has only improved on this, making her resistant to the elements and impervious to cold. Her coloration is a tricolor pattern of black, tan, and white, accented with black hindpaws, a white diamond blaze on her forehead, and white pips as eyebrows. Laurie's eyes are a deep navy blue, a hue inherited from her mother's side of the family.

In her Optime form, which she prefers, Laurie's mane is white streaked with black. Her hair is not naturally curly, so she takes great pains to style it with beeswax to maintain her coif. She wears a choker necklace and a pair of barrettes that she fashioned herself out of blue satin ribbon and six-pointed star charms (which match her sister's hair ornament). As a jeweler, she often crafts extra accessories and wears them on a test run.

Personality

Laurier presents herself as a proud and opinionated lady who will stand up for her strong morals. She seeks beauty in herself and others, is noticeably vain, and spends a lot of time on her appearance when she is not crafting jewelry. She is happy to extend the same courtesy to others whom she judges in need of a makeover (whether they want one or not), and will often give away accessories if she thinks they are a perfect match to accentuate some physical characteristic. Laurie can be a bit of a mother hen around children, fussing and caring for them without a second thought. While the difference is subtle, Laurie is slightly more mistrustful of males than females. She comports herself with as much dignity and propriety as the situation calls for, but if forced into a dangerous situation, she reveals a merciless side and a hidden knife that easily explains how one so fussy in mannerism could have survived on her own.

Laurie grew up speaking French, so English is her second language and she is not as fluent: her pronunciations are often a little off thanks to her accent, and she may be stuck asking for the proper name of certain objects. This hurts her pride, as she feels it is unseemly to have a poor vocabulary, and often attempts to start the conversation in French so that she can make a distinguished first impression. Those who speak poorly or crudely may be in for a grammar lesson or a lecture on etiquette. While she is ever-polite and forges superficial friendships easily, it is rare for her to truly open up and trust anyone. Her mother's early abandonment and father's disinterest taught her she could only rely on herself, and she remains independent and guarded. As such, she is inexperienced with romance and does not actively seek entanglements.

  • Personality can be expanded by adopter. Laurie could have a connection to the supernatural (her mother told fortunes, her aunt could see ghosts, her grandfather had premonitions).

Relationships

Key Relations

  • Paquette is her loving aunt who took up the role of replacement mother. Laurie still thinks of her fondly, and refers to her as "ma tantine" (the equivalent of "Auntie").
  • Céleste is her sister whom she hopes to find again someday. They were close once, but parted to find their own way in life.
  • Claude was an emotionally distant father figure who largely ignored the pups. Laurie would rather forget about him than be reminded that she was unwanted.

History

When dog littermates Claude, Gringoire, and Paquette came of age in Tampa, they decided to travel as a group and see the world. In 2011 a lone wolf named Din was traveling along the coastline, and fell in with the Benoît Fauchelevent siblings for a spell. The brothers Claude and Gringoire were both enamored with her and fought for her affections. Din enjoyed the attention, and when she went into heat, she secretly mated with both of them with no intention of ever choosing one over the other. (In truth, Din was most interested in their sister, Paquette.) When the passionate brothers discovered her pregnancy, they flew into a jealous rage. In the heat of the moment Gringoire was killed, leaving Claude to lie about his brother's whereabouts and claim Din as his rightful mate.

The traveler gave birth to three pups, and Claude assumed all three were biologically his own. However, Din soon grew bored of parenthood without the excitement of the brothers' romantic rivalry. She eventually drifted off again, leaving her son and daughters with scarce memories of her, intending them to be raised by Claude and his sister Paquette. Without his brother or his lover to show for it, Claude wanted nothing to do with the puppies anymore, and so the responsibility fell on Paquette's shoulders. She raised her nieces and nephew to speak more French than English, and eventually they too came of age and set off to travel.

Laurier and Céleste remained together long after their brother Pierrat set off on his own. The sisters learned how to fend for themselves, though they made plenty of mistakes along the way. They fell in with a group of French Canadian traders, where Laurie developed an interest in jewelry making and decided to apprentice under their craftsmen. She was taught trade negotiation and the art of etiquette among other skills. Céleste, who had no such interest, decided she would move on and bid her sibling farewell. Laurie crafted a matching pair of hair ornaments and gave one to her sister as a parting gift, keeping the other as a sentimental attachment.

The seasons rolled by, and Laurie felt she learned all that she could; she parted ways with the traders and headed north to see if she could pick up Céleste's trail. When she reached The Outpost she saw trade opportunity and a way to find information, and decided to make it her base of operations.
