Jiro Ken

1.  Appearance

Standing at just under six feet, Jiro is a stout man with a round, somewhat plump, face that is often home to a welcoming grin. The majority of his coat is black, though a stretch of white fur cascades down from his lower jaw to the bottom of his belly and a pair of white pips sit an inch or two above his eyes.

A life of sailing, gambling and borderline excess has made its mark on Jiro in the form of thick arms and a rotund belly matching his shorter-than-average height almost comically. Embracing his appearance, Jiro carries himself with a jolly, relaxed demeanor, with a smile on his face and his dark amber eyes glinting with mischief. Despite his somewhat lazy outward appearance, he is not incapable of acts of strength or physical exertion, his fat hides muscles tempered by the day to day life of a sailor, which have helped him through a few seedy situations in his past.

Jiro can usually be seen wearing a thick open-front vest and loose fitting breeches, with a white bandana rolled up and tied around one arm. He always carries a small pouch on his person to store his dice, a few pinches of tobacco and his smoking pipe.

2.  Personality

At his core Jiro is a friendly and welcoming individual. Spending most of his life aboard a ship, with only his family and strangers for company, taught him the importance of treating others with respect. This neighborly attitude resulted in the inception of some of his less savory interests, as many seafaring folk have no cares for pastimes that don't fill their bellies with alcohol or their pockets with coin. And so it was that Jiro learned to gamble, schooled in as many games as there were new crew members at each port of call. Nowadays he finds nothing more entertaining than a game of dice among new friends.

Jiro also loves to seek out new experiences and visit new places, a sensation that has only grown more intense over his time at sea. He has learned a great deal from fellow ship-mates and, though his skill in academics is not particularly noteworthy, he has knowledge of a wide variety of practical skills, such as fishing, carpentry and simple medicine.

From the width of his waist it is clear to any that Jiro enjoys food. It is one of his great loves and, in his youth, he would often gamble with other sailors for their helpings. In recent times he has taken an interest in cooking as well as simply consuming food.

3.  History

Jiro was born in a small port on the southern coast of China. The second son of a family of sailors and traders he has spent his life moving between ports and ships, never staying on land for more than a few days.

His parents originally hailed from Japan, but decided to travel around the world plying their trade. His brother, Shou, was born a year before him and was enthralled by the idea of continuing the family business. While his brother learned much of trading and captaining ships from his parents, Jiro was content to settle in with the crew, to learn their skills and listen to their stories. But as the months passed, the confinement of the ships deck began to grate on him. He longed to explore one of the lands they made port at, to walk its trails and know its people. But every stop was the same, they would have a few days to resupply and trade, Jiro would get an agonizing taste of what he really wanted and then they would set off again for a new destination.

It couldn't last. And after leaving a port in the northern Americas, Jiro settled on the fact the next destination would be his last for a good long while.
