Holis Reistad

Holis Reistad was a member of Vinátta since March 2016 until its disbandment.

1.  Appearance

Holis is a seasoned, low-content wolfdog, a full 90% of her blood being Norwegian Elkhound with just 10% Eurasian Wolf. She has a huskier body type common in the Spitz breeds which looks even more broad with her thick coat of muted fawn and gray. Her pelt mostly a dull fawn with a charcoal colored saddle and dark ears. Silvery hairs have mixed into her coat due to her age, particularly around the crown of her head, muzzle, and paws.

A bearlike head tops her shoulders with small, triangular eyes that are black as pitch, or probably were before they started growing foggy with age. Small but sharply pointed ears stand at attention on her wide skull with wisps of salt and pepper hair pulled up in a severe bun at the nape of her neck. Her square muzzle has gone mostly gray, her inky nose standing out amidst the silvery hairs. Her shoulders hunch slightly with arthritis but she still manages to move with an unusual briskness, her curled tail whisking behind her in a businesslike manner. Stocky of leg and arm, she is quite strong despite her arthritis and elderly status and easily lifts burdens other elders might avoid.

No matter where she is, she carries a fur bag with medical supplies in it, even using it as a pillow when she sleeps. She has little care for clothing as fashion, but usually is found wearing a butcher's smock while preparing medicine or treating the sick and wounded.

2.  Personality

Stubborn is the best way to describe the old wolfdog, a workaholic through and through. She's the kind of woman who would choose to skip meals if it meant getting more work done in the day. Age has made her an insomniac and she gratefully grasps at the extra hours for practicing her chosen crafts. Holis won't win any personality contests, she's prickly as a porcupine and difficult to work with but under her frosty exterior her heart is very loyal.

Though she berates and nags at her charges, she would never turn anyone away who needed help regardless of who they are or if they had anything to offer her. She has little need for anything that's not absolutely useful, eschewing everything else for function. Her living spaces are always spartan, consisting of only what she absolutely needs to get by. Orderly, she hates mess and will fussily clean areas that don't even belong to her so be sure your space is clean before you invite her to your home lest you want to find her reorganizing your shelf.

The old bat isn't very easy to learn from but she never turns away anyone who is interested in learning medicine, probably because she knows that even she won't live forever. She despises the ungrateful, boastful, and lazy.

4.  History

Born in late June of 2006 as part of a litter of four pups in southern Norway, she had a humble puppyhood. Both of her parents were fishermen and as soon as she and her three brothers were old enough, they joined the trade. Found to be determined and skilled, she was put to work mending her parents nets but she didn't enjoy the work. As such, she didn't balk much when her hand in marriage was sought by the son of the local dock-master.

It was a good match for her family and Holis found that the young man was easily cowed, giving her free reign to do as she pleased. Medicine drew her eye and she wasted no time in immersing herself in the study of anatomy and minor illnesses under the tutelage of an English physician. Through the years she eventually started her own minor practice, much to the chagrin of her squeamish mate. Holis never knew whose fault it was, but their union never brought forth any children and when her mate died after five years, she was secretly relieved.

Tending the hurts and regular illnesses of the dock workers kept her busy but she longed to travel and learn more from more cosmopolitan sources. Her travels took her to Dublin, London, Paris, and even Rome. Each city brought her more knowledge though she found she was most attached to her simple roots, preferring to spend her time sewing up sailors after drunken brawls than study diseases. She might have returned to Norway but for a twist of fate.

While serving as a ships doctor for an Irish crew there was a mutiny and the decision was to set sail to the Americas. Deciding to take advantage of the situation, she continued her duties as a doctor to the crew and disembarked with pay in Norfolk, VA and simply continued her travels. Shortly after her tenth birthday, she decided that settling down would be best and began consider where she might spend her remaining years. Vinatta was an easy choice, their culture closely resembling her home of Norway.
