1. History Overview
1.1 Childhood
Coli was born into bad luck; her father Haku Soul had an affair with a mated female, Milla Jolie, who then died during the difficult childbirth. Coli was the only one of her litter to survive. Milla's religious pack didn't want to raise her since she was born into sin and strongly resembled her true father, so after she was weaned by a wet-nurse she was forced back onto the loner Haku. He did not want her either but resigned to keep his firstborn child, whom he named after his mother, Colibri Soul (but rather than give the family name to an unwanted bastard, chose to tack his own name on instead). She remained small, but was otherwise healthy, and survived.
Her early childhood was simple and lonely, without any playmates or friends. Her capricious father left her with his old pack, Clouded Tears, for a brief time -- but when she found her cousin Cercelee they tracked down Haku together to live with him again, the only life Coli has known. Cercelee became the sister she never had, and the girls spent all their time together. Haku was emotionally distant to them, and as they grew older, he became more volatile. At one point Coli made Cercelee leave because of Haku's increasingly strange behavior, as she wanted to protect her foster sister from all the arguments but thought herself immune to her father's temper. She was wrong. Haku too left her behind, after a fit of madness where he beat and raped his own daughter. It broke her spirit completely and ruined the fairytale world she once had believed in, and from that point onward, Coli began a long slow spiral into depression.
Too weak at first to leave, she spent some seasons learning how to garden, something that brought her a small measure of peace. On her own and left for dead, her mind turned to a darker hobby, cultivating plants poisonous to canines. As a youth, Coli did not like to hurt others in body or spirit, but the poisonous plants began to fascinate her as a way to defend herself from the evils of the world. She was too paranoid to seek the company of others, and adapted a feral lifestyle to survive. She spent many months alone in the woods before concluding that Haku was not coming home, and she was better off without him.
1.2 Dahlia de Mai
In time she drifted across the north, and around her second birthday caught wind of a rumor that Cercelee is now the alpha of a pack, and that her father is serving below her. Horrified, Coli seeks them out and ends up joining Dahlia de Mai to protect Cer from the man who raised them both. Her time as a loner has done her no favors; she has a nervous stutter and poor social skills that make her something of an outcast. She meets her aunt Mew Sadira, and befriends Alexey Koios the Caregiver, before Haku Soul finds her. He terrifies her but does not hurt her beyond a few bruises, and in the end she is shaken but remains in the pack land. She passed the test.
Still skittish and too embarrassed to talk to Cercelee about how Haku ruined her, she instead meets Deuce Rhiannon and her daughter, Willow Soul. Learning that Willow is her half-sister, Deuce offers to let her live in the house together. As she slowly gains a measure of confidence and comfort from having a family again, Coli allows herself to dream once more of a future for herself that includes mateship and parenthood. Haku's sons Conor and Emwe are born into the pack, and Coli spends special time with her half-brothers, secretly imagining herself as their mother.
In one excursion outside of the packland, Coli meets the wolf she would fall in love with, Anu. She always thought she was searching for a prince, but her love turned out to be for a female. She and Anu try to make time and meet each other regularly, but the stress of trying to balance the precarious relationship while living in a separate pack poorly affects her psyche, and in a moment of weakness and depression, Coli attempts suicide. She survives thanks to Vigilante Haskel's quick actions, and views him as a guardian angel. She tries to emulate his good deed by helping an ailing Leland, but ends up assisting in his own suicide, which was ultimately successful. Guilt over this pushes her to finally uproot herself and leave Dahlia de Mai, although Haku Soul assaulted her on the borders when she tried to say her goodbyes. Anu came to her rescue, but not before she lost her tail in the skirmish. It is the last time she sees her father alive.
1.3 Crimson Dreams
On November 2, 2009, she renounced her home in Dahlia to join Crimson Dreams to be with Anu. Though they lived together, their mateship was unofficial, and their relationship was pushed aside as the Second Dahlian War erupted around them. Coli had never been in a relationship before, and her naivety led to a difficulty communicating with her partner. She struggled to connect with her new packmates, as she was ashamed to be seen in public with her father leading a brutal war, as well as embarrassed over her amputated tail. Duties and stress gradually drove a wedge between the once-happy couple, and Coli's depression overtook her.
Colibri became very distant from Anu due to fear of not living up to the lofty expectations of a leader, and quietly moved out of her room. Though it hurt them both, it seemed that their romance was over. Coli could not admit to her fear of rejection and held out for the hope that they could fix things. Finally, she found that while her resolve had been wavering, Anu had birthed a litter. It was the ultimate betrayal to have been left for a man, and the final straw for the sensitive wolf. Coli ran off without a word, leaving no traces behind or clues to where she went. This act of cowardice was later considered her greatest regret.
1.4 Journey
June 2010, the summer she left Crimson Dreams and 'Souls altogether. Colibri wandered to the north and west, further and further from what she had to leave behind. During this time she grew lean and bitter, hating herself for ruining what little chance of happiness she had. She reverted to her feral loner lifestyle for a full year, still traveling ever-forward, before she fell prey to an ambush. Four young coyotes, presumably siblings, startled and captured her in late winter, where her brown fur gave no camouflage against the northern snow. They bound her wrists, ankles, and jaws, and proceeded to drag her along their own journey as a prisoner.
Listening to their incessant chatter, Coli learned that they were ambitious and foolhardy youths hoping to join the great Inferni clan they had heard rumors of. They assumed they would have a better chance of being accepted if they could offer a captive wolf to the clan. She was forced to march back along the very path she had taken to escape the packlands, knowing that if they reached IF, she would become another skull on a pike along their territory border. Seasons passed, and she grew weaker and weaker as the coyotes' prisoner. As they rested for the night in a grove of trees, one day's travel from 'Souls, Coli identified a patch of hemlock weeds, and mixed the leaves into the coyote's foraged provisions. That morning all four of her captors fell into convulsions and died as she watched.
She has repressed the memories of her captivity, but can recall them if pressed for details. Her love of poisons dies around this time, and over time her guilt makes her stop collecting them altogether.
1.5 Vinátta
Foundation
Finding herself back in the 'Souls territories again after such a long hiatus has left Coli confused and bitter. Dahlia de Mai has been gone for a long time, and she is left to assume her father is dead. She soon encounters Alder, Anu's young son, and is deeply moved to hear that Anu never took another mate. She is tempted to go to Crimson Dreams right then and there, but realizes how shabby and pathetic she has become. Instead, she finds herself wandering throughout the neutral territories, getting chased off pack borders and getting into spats with other loners. She feels like it is too late for her to ever fall in love again or start a family, and that her life no longer has a purpose. The only positive encounter she has is with an Infernian named Emmanuelle Brenna. When she finally visits the borders of her old home, Crimson Dreams, she finds that the pack has recently disbanded.
It is then she encounters Lilin Soulstorm, and learns that she is Coli's half sister, another child of Haku's. She feels a kinship to this dark and mysterious relative, and soon after meets Lilin's cousin, Saul Stormbringer. The two are gathering their scattered family members and creating a new pack, Vinátta, and invite Coli to join them as a founding member. She hesitates at first, but realizes this could be a good thing for her, a new home. She meets them in the northern territories, befriends Niernan, Bran, and Ezra, and accepts their invitation. She is given a house of her own, and has settled into the peaceful lifestyle, raising an herb garden for the pack and a flower garden just for herself.
Pregnancy
On July 7th, 2012, Coli was assaulted just outside the borders of her pack. Toby, under the influence of his volatile second personality "Fang", chanced upon her and forcibly impregnated her. She is deeply disturbed by the mixed emotions this stirs up, and denies the symptoms as long as she can. However, she grows more ill by the day and finally seeks out Saul's medical advice. He reveals that she is indeed pregnant, and promises their pack will protect and help her in any way they can.
Coli is still terrified that something bad will happen, and soon goes to Lilin, begging her sister to look after the pups if anything happens to her. She suspects that the complications that killed her mother during childbirth will affect her too. Lilin reveals that she is also pregnant, and the sisters grow very close during their gestation. Ezra and Niernan extend their kindness to her, easing her fears even when she does not openly tell them what happened. Ezra's departure from the pack is a tough blow, though. When Coli's due date finally arrives, she goes into labor late at night and stumbles her way to Saul and Lilin's house for their help. They assist her delivery, and she has three healthy daughters: Fiora vin Haki, Farina vin Haki, and Florina Soul. After the birth, Coli suffers a postpartum hemorrhage, which leaves her severely anemic from the blood loss. She is weak and exhausted, but she survives.
Motherhood & Promotion
The same day her pups are born, a ghost from her past resurfaces. Anu, along with her companions Tayui Aston, Oak, Cypress, and Cassia Calidus, arrive as a group and make their home in Vinátta. Coli is too weak to go outside for the first four days, but soon learns that Anu is there and seeks her out immediately. They have a tense confrontation that ends poorly, sending Coli into a downward spiral of negative emotion, in part due to postpartum depression. She takes the girls to her house and remains sequestered there, shutting herself off from the world and barely functioning. It is one of the lowest points in her life, and if not for the hurricane, she might never have ventured out again.
Lilin finally confronts her about her behavior, and Coli confesses to everything that is weighing on her, becoming emotional to the point of lashing out. Coli is immediately regretful, and asks for any chance to fix herself - a task, a job, something to take her mind off being alone. She wants to be a better parent than her father was, but her depression was severely limiting her. Not long after that, Miskunn Stormbringer organized an Ausa Vatni rite of passage for the month-old puppies. At the ceremony, Lilin and Saul reveal that they are promoting Coli to leadership, as their Sannindi. Determined to live up to their expectations, Coli begins to answer border calls and act more respectable - it is just the push she needed to get her life together.
Sannindi
Colibri finally meets Tayui Aston face to face and can barely contain her jealousy when she learns Anu is her mate, but manages to remain fairly civil throughout the strained encounter. Shortly thereafter, she chances upon Toby, and unleashes much of her negativity on him, threatening to kill him in return for assaulting her that summer. Surprisingly, though, Toby is not what she remembered; without his Fang personality, he is weak and pitiable, and she lets him go. She returns to her growing daughters and vows to keep their father's tortured existence a secret. She begins to connect more with her children, finally seeing them as hers rather than products of rape.
When she sees Anu again, she is more composed, and introduces her daughters to the former Dreamer. However, she learns that Tayui is pregnant and Anu will raise the pups alongside her mate, and Coli flees before admitting she is still in love with Anu. A distraction arises in the form of Emmanuelle Brenna, her friend from months prior, who arrives near-death to join the pack and live with her sister (next door to Colibri and her daughters). Coli makes sure to check up on her, though she is also distracted by the arrival of Rin Itou, a rebellious youth from Anathema who comes to live with her for the winter. Eventually, though, her thoughts return to Anu, and she mourns the loss of her love.
Loss and Gain
She learns that her friend Niernan was left by his partner, and opens up to him, the two finding solace in their shared heartbreak. She spends the night with him romantically, and in the morning despite knowing they would rather remain friends, realizes there could be more to life than pining after Anu forever. Her daughters undergo changes: Florina is attacked by Saul's falcon but does not feel her injuries, revealing that she cannot feel any pain -- and Fiora is traumatized into shifting months earlier than her sisters, something that upsets the balance. Coli helps conduct the Ausa Vatni for Tayui and Anu's new litter, and is calmer than she expected to be, spending the rest of the celebration with Niernan.
Events in Vinátta take a turn for the worse, however. There are two deaths in the same month, spurring Emmanuelle to leave for her old home in Inferni. Florina finally reaches a breaking point in her jealousy of Fiora, and in a fit of rage, bites Colibri's wrist and breaks it. Coli passes out, and comes to in Niernan's arms. He safely carries her to Saul, reluctantly revealing that Florina ran off in her emotional state and he does not know where she went. The bad news does not end there, as Saul greets them deep in depression. He soon admits that Lilin just ended her mateship with him, leaving the pack and taking their son Lund with her. Coli is devastated that her sister did not tell her, and has a breakdown in front of Saul and Niernan. It marks another dark period in her life.
She recovers slowly over the summer, relying almost entirely on Fiora's help and maintaining emotional distance from her packmates. Florina never returned home, and Coli comes to accept that her daughter found a new pack. Vinátta celebrates their first anniversary, drawing her out of her shell and causing Colibri and Niernan to reflect on their friendship and promise never to leave without the other. Coli is quick to withdraw again as the Ironside Conflict erupts at their borders, culminating in all-out battle. Once the fighting is over and the threat is vanquished, she finally seeks out Niernan and admits to him that he is more than a friend -- she's fallen in love with him, and was avoiding him for fear of getting her heart broken as it was with Anu. Niernan is overjoyed, and accepts her as his mate.
New Life
Colibri adjusts to being Niernan's mate by spending more and more time at his house getting to know him and his family. It takes her a long time to officially break the news to Fiora and Farina, neither of whom were particularly pleased. Coli is still markedly happy and confident at this point in her life, and it is not long before she and Niernan unwittingly conceive a litter. Events are put into motion when Lilin finally returns to the pack -- Saul is distraught and comes to Coli for advice, and recognizes her symptoms of illness for what they truly are. Coli is stunned to learn she will have another litter, and reflects on all the mistakes she made with her flower daughters. She resolves to be a better mother this time around, because she has a mate to depend on.
Coli did not expect to be affected by Sangi'lak disbanding, but it came with a surprising side effect: Orvar Stormbringer and Bel Tlu'gv. The infants were left without a home and given to their father, Ascher. Coli volunteers to be their wet-nurse, as her own puppies will be delivered soon and she can provide for all of them. Secretly she fears she may not have enough milk to go around, so she adjusts her diet to add more fatty meats. Her stress culminates in a panic attack that sends her plunging into the woods dangerously close to her due date. She takes a tumble down a rocky slope that triggers her labor, and she is forced to begin the birth by herself. However, Niernan soon realizes she's gone and tracks her down, and with his aid, their puppies are born: Russano Stormbringer, Fionna vin Haki, Ninian Stormbringer. Colibri suffers a moderate to severe case of postpartum anemia from the birth, and it takes her months to recover.
During her sickness, Coli remains at home with her litter and unfortunately shirks her Sannindi duties. Florina Soul visits several times in an attempt to mend their relationship, but grows dissatisfied with the state of leadership. Finally Florina challenges her mother for the position, and Colibri agrees to step down if Florina will come home permanently. Her priority has become her mate and their children, and Coli feels her wayward daughter needs this chance and will be a stronger leader than she was. The rest of the pack does not agree, and the controversial decision causes much dissent. That, and the unexpected departure of her dear friend Saul, makes Coli retreat to her home in an anxiety spiral. It is Niernan's patient support that eases her back to a place of stability, and as their offspring quickly grow to adulthood, Coli finds a measure of peace at his side.
