Beth Cormier is one of the refugees of Camp Eclipse.

Daughter of Willow Cormier and O'Brien, she and her sister Doineann were born in the wilderness of Manitoba and had a humble upbringing. Though they had little, her parents raised the girls with love, teaching them survival skills and telling them stories of cultures and family they'd yet to meet. Once they were old enough to travel, the little family walked east, until harsh weather made this difficult. That winter, Beth lost both her mother and her sister in an accident -- a catalyst for a personality change in the girl.

She and her father carried on alone, reaching Willow's former pack, New Caledonia, at the end of summer. Meeting her Cormier uncles and learning more about her mother's culture, Beth settled into pack life well. However, her second winter brought tragedy once more as New Caledonia was tormented by dark omens and suspicious strangers. Before things escalated, Beth was sent off with the founders of Camp Eclipse for her safety. Thankfully, her father returned to her after the pack's disbandment, and together they began to navigate their new lives as refugees.

Assumptions

Camp Eclipse members may assume and reference the following without discussion/asking:

  • General conversations (i.e. unlikely to affect later roleplay) -- Beth is friendly and chatty.
  • Beth is often at the river's edge, fishing or creating floating shrines for Nín. She always shares her daily catch.
  • She will tag along with others for chores (especially with livestock) but usually shadows her father when he's home.
Plot Opportunities
  • Beth is seeking teachers in the band, especially for skills related to fishing -- but other exciting things, too! We can set up an OOC assumption that your character is mentoring Beth.

1.  Characteristics

1.1  Appearance

Physical

Beth looks a little disorganized, from her perpetually tousled coat, to the bold ticking speckled across her white patches, to her mismatched eyes.

Inheriting both the curly fur of her father’s waterdog ancestors, and the wiry hair from her mother, her medium-length coat is coarse and wavy everywhere. The hair on her tail is longer, giving the effect of a tangled and constantly waving plume, and some excess fur on her snout gives the effect of a short mustache and beard.

If solid-colored, she would be black with tan accents such as her legs, muzzle, and brows — but white-spotting breaks this up, splashing her underside and notably one half of her face. The white is ticked with black or brown spots depending on location. She has heterochromia: her right eye coppery-brown, her left a soft blue against the white.

She is average in height for a female, with a sturdy and almost wolfish build despite her overwhelmingly doggish appearance. While she shirks clothing, she often wears baubles from nature: shells, feathers, reeds, teeth, anything she can fit on a string or braid into her hair.

Interaction
  • Speech: Calm and gentle, sometimes meek, often warm, with an amalgamation of an accent that's nigh-indecipherable. Additionally near-fluent in a sign-language taught to her by Willow (adapted from Storm and Toklo's sign).
  • Scent: Spruce and cedar, cattails and sedge, peat moss, silt
  • Physical Expression & Quirks:
    • Has a tendency to stick her tongue out while in thought, then forget about it.

1.2  Personality

Summarized: Upbeat, friendly, empathetic, curious, playful, secretly shy, timid

One could be forgiven for not knowing Beth was ever anything but loud and upbeat -- a truth that she consciously tamps down herself, too.

As a child, Beth was quite shy and timid, more resembling her reserved and flighty father -- though she always had her mother's reverence for nature and her deep well of kindness and empathy. She has overcome much of her shyness through effort, especially in adapting to life in a community. These days, she is outgoing and excited to make friends. She's curious and eager to learn new things, and not afraid to get into lighthearted mischief or get filthy as she explores the beloved wilderness of the watershed. She jokes and plays with a childlike but self-aware boisterousness, eager to evoke smiles and lighten others' moods.

Parts of the personality she presents are traits incorporated from those she's lost: her mother's optimism, her sister's boldness. By emulating them, she hopes to fill the void they've left behind, both in her own heart and the world around her, and to mask her grief with a vestige of their smiles.

Like her mother, Beth is reverent toward nature and has a connection to the water, despite all that it has taken from her.

Interests
  • Fishing -- including crafting of nets, baskets, poles, bait, and other tools
  • Waterways, swimming, potentially even boats and other watercraft
  • Baubles with water and wood motifs, wanting to create her own
  • Exploration and travel
  • And perhaps others that have not been explored yet ICly!
Sexuality

Beth is inexperienced, but as she's settled, has begun to properly "notice" individuals of various genders.

Spirituality

Beth was taught about her mother's faith when young, which includes animistic beliefs and tales of a river goddess. Specifically, and in relation to her future pack's culture, she was told about Nín's tenets and worship through her mother's kindhearted lens, and has taken to this most enthusiastically. She knows a little about the other Caledonian gods, too, but is more interested in the Old (Nín, Nanin) than the New. She also suspects that her father has his own beliefs and gods (and has witnessed his heart-burying rituals) but he doesn't talk about them.

1 She is named after Eliza Cormier, her grandmother -- but her name is also a cheeky reference to O'Brien's birth name, much to his chagrin.
