Personality

Many creatures seem to interpret Axle as the all brawn and no brain sort of canine. And Axle lets this happen, in fact, he enjoys playing the dumb part. It offers little challenge, no watchful eyes, and no particular connections with those around him. Axle goes through life pretending as though his body is all he can offer, when in reality he's more intelligent than he lets on. He is certainly no Einstein, but he has a fully functioning mind, a mind that is more calculating than he lets on. He's hard to understand, or perhaps it is simply that no one has ever tried.

In Axle and Grit's travels, Axle was always the "brains" of the operation. The dog is smarter than he lets on, but he's not the brightest crayon in the box, either. Barry's taught him about basic mechanical principles so he can do more work around the property, but Axle's true ability lies in his "street smarts" -- he can sniff out a lie a mile away and is an excellent judge of character. Despite being rather physically intimidating, he's a fairly easy-going guy. He likes to tell tall tales and relax with a stiff drink.

Residence

Up until spring 2014, Axle resided in Jordheim along with his companion, Grit. Recently the pair decided the village was getting too crowded for their taste, and they chose to move into the quiet streets of Amherst. When not on patrol, they can be found lounging in a garage they fixed up (not unlike their old haunt in Halifax). A shelving unit on the back wall is stocked with dried meats, bottles of liquor, and an assortment of human tools.

Appearance

Axle is both intimidating and handsome in appearance. A true rottweiler, Axle is nearly as wide as he is tall, and a walking hunk of muscle. His pelt color has allowed his species to thrive despite their lack of domestication, a mixture of black and tans which allow them to blend well with their surroundings. Big brown eyes give off an eerie false sense of comfort, adding to his intimidation factor.

Axle feels far more comfortable in his Optime form, where he stands at six feet, eight inches and bulges muscle on every inch of his body. He wears no clothes, though does often wear a maroon strip of t-shirt tied around his right arm, which he ripped off the body of the single soul he has killed in all his life. He has a full-length tail and floppy ears.

History

When Atel and Mauren, two coincidentally pureblooded rottweilers ran into each other in what was once the midwestern United States, they hit it off immediately and soon after Mauren found herself delivering five puppies, four of which survived the birth. Axle, Rek, Grease, and Tea were all the pureblooded products who found themselves thrust into the world of loners. Axle immediately asserted himself as the dominant puppy, fighting his way to be the first to drink from his mother's milk and lead the other pups in their childhood adventures. Axle worshiped his father greatly and it was his father who taught him how to be handy with tools and later how to enjoy a good smoke or drink. The family was together for nearly a year before Axle found himself eager to move on in life, alone.

However, he would not be alone for long. About a year deep into his travels, Axle came across a wounded puppy, struggling for life, tangled in a rosebush. He bandaged the bleeding child and carried the Presa Canario whom he named Grit to the nearest village, where he stayed for some time helping with maintenance in exchange for a recent mother willingly providing milk to Grit. When his tiny companion was weaned and able to thrive on solid foods, Axle decided to leave, with Grit accompanying him. For the next three years, the two remained inseparable, Axle leading the way as the older and wiser canine, with Grit following blindly. These travels have led them to 'Souls territory in the recent months, more specifically Halifax.

They were not in the city long before they ran into Anselm de le Poer, forming a partnership to guard his garage.^[2] They loyally protect the garage even as it changes hands to Maserati, Anselm's daughter, and years later to Barrett Poer de Aika XIII, Anselm's grandson^[3]. It was under Barry's watch that the Hilsburn group founded -- notably Saul Stormbringer, Lilin Soulstorm, Ezra Rosen, and the puppies Temeraire and Elias. Axle and Grit become close friends with the group and they enjoy each others' company, until the day Barry packs up and leaves. The group disbands, and Axle and Grit find themselves alone again. Months later they receive a letter from Barry explaining that he is happy where is and won't be returning, and this is the final push for the dogs to leave the city.^[4] They seek out Lilin to the north in Amherst and she welcomes them to Vinátta.
