Argive Hemlock (AR-guy-vv HEM-lock) is a member of Salsola, ranked as an Arbiter. He holds the jobs of Veleno (poisoner) and Curandero (healer).

He is the son of Eumelia Stavros and Agilmar Kader, born into the pack of Moss Reach in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. His early months of life were blissfully normal, but, as he grew older, Argive began to notice more and more of his father’s abusive tendencies towards his mother. His teenage and early adult years were filled with conflict due to his father's abuse and over all shady activities. Argive apprenticed under his mother in the medicinal field until his third year, when he was forced to leave his home pack after murdering his father. He bounced around from place to place afterwards, furthering his studies in his field of interest while darkness festered and grew. In Portland, he found a new focus, and made his way north in search of the Kingdom of Salsola. He joined their number in early fall of 2019, and was sponsored by Sanguine Valentine.

Outside of the pack, Argive assumes one of two names, “Thanasis” or “Thanatos”, depending on his intentions. His disguised scent is typically of smoked wood and mint.

Retired from Veleno (Poisoner) title in July 2023.

Biases
  • Color – Very particular to green and blue-eyed women
  • Bias – ---
Sexuality

Argive is not a man that puts much thought or worth into romance, and, as such, does not partake in the affections or flesh of another unless there he has a particular connection with them. He is not above entertaining another, but, sincere, romantic feelings for him are rare. One would need to have an extensive relationship with him beforehand, as well, be able to actually peak and keep his interest. Argive is likely to be drawn to intelligent, independent women that will either share dominance with him or be romantically submissive to him.

Spirituality & Substances

He doesn’t believe in religion, but will gladly entertain or pick apart someone else’s beliefs.

Of substances, if it comes from a plant, Argive has likely tried it at least once to have “first-hand experience” of what they do and how they affect the mind and body. As a man who dabbles in medicine and poisons alike, Argive believes it’s important to know what effects his victims or clients should be expected to feel. He always makes sure to have a lesser animal or another Luperci test it first though!

1.3  Skills

Note: Listed skills are those that the character has some significant talent or interest in to be noteworthy. Skills that have been mastered (and are best expressed as such) are marked.

Main Focus: ROLE TITLES
  • Poison (Master):
Argive’s specialty and something that has held his interest since he was a pup. He learned most of what he knows from his mother, though, has come quite a ways on his own since leaving her apprenticeship. Argive is highly knowledgeable in poisonous plants and how to extract the deadly properties from them; be it into a powder, liquid, or merely the raw plant itself. His greatest feat has been milking rattlesnakes and vipers, a trick he learned from a jackal foreigner of the East. Argive is constantly testing his work on lesser creatures or unfortunate Luperci. He often coats one of his blades in poison.
  • Medicinal Herbs (Master):
His mother being the local medicine woman for his birth pack and the smaller, surrounding packs, Argive was introduced to the field of herbal medicine early on, and, when he shifted, he officially took an apprenticeship underneath his mother. He is well-versed in most plants, and has kept a well-documented bundle of journals to keep his notes in. Of plants he’s unfamiliar with, Argive will heavily invest in studying all he can about them.
  • Deception & Manipulation (Master):
Argive has quite the silver tongue, and can often backpedal out of a situation with minimal damage if his honied words fail him. Armed with a sharp memory, being highly observant, and frustratingly preceptive, he’s quite good at using logic against someone or playing on one’s feelings or strong opinions. He is someone who will turn your own words against you.
  • Stealing:
His father was known to have sticky fingers, an unfortunate talent that was passed down to his son. Argive rarely steals just to steal, however, which keeps him out of trouble for the most part. Usually, he only partakes in the practice when he is sure he can get away with it, or, if the benefit or leverage of stealing the item outweighs the risk of being caught. He uses deceptive measures and stealth to get what he wants. His talent in this also makes him good at planting evidence or slipping poisons into a drink or food with a slight of hand.
Auxiliary Skills and Hobbies
  • Reading & Writing (Master):
He can read and write very well, having learned to do so from both of his parents in his youth.
  • Stealth:
Argive is highly skilled in the art of stalking and the silent approach. He knows how to step to minimize detection, how to move to make him harder to spot. This makes him a good hunter in this regard, and he thoroughly enjoys sneaking up on unsuspecting others and surprising them.
  • Close Combat & Knives:
Though he does his best to hide it, Argive is skilled with a blade and fighting in close quarters. The basis of his education was taught by his uncle. He had originally been taught as a basic necessity for self-defense, and later encouraged to maintain his skills to help protect his mother and himself both at home and when they left the pack’s borders in search of herbs or to visit one of the smaller, neighboring packs in the area. Argive’s style is meant to be quick, hitting vital areas or those meant to stun or slow his opponent. In a heavy-hitting brawl, he has the disadvantage. With feral fighting, Argive is even more so.
  • Cooking:
Because of his knowledge with herbs and constantly testing the effects of them, Argive has a bit of skill in cooking a meal with some flavor to it. It’s by no means feast-worthy, but, it certainly beats eating a bland potato. He likes to experiment too, and you best beware if he picks you to be the test subject of a new or poisonous plant.

CHAPTER 1 / CHARACTER ARC 1 (Pre-‘Souls; off-board)

Argive was born Achilles Stavros to Eumelia Stavros and Agilmar Kader, in the pack of Moss Reach, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Eumelia was the area’s local medicine woman. She was highly talented and known for her sweet and caring nature. Agilmar had been a Loner she found by chance and nurtured back to health, sparking a whirlwind romance that led to Eumelia being pregnant only months later. Eumelia’s brother, Kleon, disliked her new mate, however, Agilmar was well-liked by the pack and Eumelia herself. The early months of Achilles’ youth were average, though, were riddled with warning signs that would not become obvious for many more seasons to come. His parents disagreed here and there, nothing out of the ordinary, however, those arguments eventually escalated physically. His father would always apologize afterwards, give his mother gifts with a glazed over explanation of their origin. His mother would always forgive him, and the cycle would continue.

Achilles was unhappy with it, but was scared into silence by a firm hand of his father’s, reassured that everything was alright by his mother. They made it feel like it was all commonplace, and that family affairs were not something meant to be shared. Both abused by Agilmar to some degree, Achilles grew close to his mother, and developed an interest in the medicinal field as a result. When he came of shifting age, he began an official apprenticeship underneath Eumelia. Because of this, he spent a lesser amount of time with his father. When he did, his father took him on “business” trips, where he inadvertently became an accessory to his father’s schemes in tricking and stealing from other Luperci in the region. His father tricked young Achilles into secrecy, making him believe that the pack’s chieftain had specifically given Agilmar such a job, but that it was to remain under the table due to its nature.

As things at home continued their vicious cycle of abuse between his parents, Achilles eventually worked up the courage to speak with his uncle, Kleon. His uncle had long suspected things were amiss in the family home, however, with Agilmar having the rest of the pack as putty in his hands, there was little he could do. He agreed to teach Achilles how to fight when the boy requested it. Things grew tense when Agilmar found out about the lessons, however, Achilles managed to convince his father under the guise of wanting to protect Eumelia—and to better help his father—when they left the pack.

Achilles grew, and the situation at home only continued to deteriorate. He had a few fights with his father over his mother, however, he had always been put in his place, either by losing the bout or when his father threatened to hurt Eumelia in retaliation for Achilles’ attitude. After his father learned of his brother, Jihan’s, death, the true, downward spiral started. Fights between Agilmar and Eumelia grew more violent, as did those between Agilmar and Achilles.

The final straw though was after Achilles had found out about Agilmar’s new affair with another woman. On the day he intended to tell his mother, he found his father and two other Loners violently raping a beaten Eumelia. When he moved to protect his mother though, he was shooed off by his father, reassured by his mother. It was just like every time before, but, Achilles should have never left. When he returned after the men and his father had left, he found his mother dead.

A week later, Achilles got into a fight with his father again. Armed with a poisoned blade, he ensured his advantage to overtake his larger and stronger father. He brutally murdered Agilmar, and went to proudly proclaim this to his uncle Kleon. However, the abuser’s death was not met with celebration. With Agilmar having long manipulated the pack to believe him to be a man without fault, Kleon knew that Achilles would be sooner tried as a killer than a savior.

Reluctantly and with a heavy heart, Kleon bid that Achilles leave the pack before the death could be discovered. Thankful as he was that Agilmar was dead, Kleon knew his sister would have rather her son live than for him to be put to death for avenging her.

CHAPTER 2 / CHARACTER ARC 2

In the months after leaving Moss Reach, Achilles traveled from place to place, never staying in one for very long. His heart ached for the abrupt loss of his home, burned violently that the pack would still view the villain of his life and murder of his mother as a “good” person. He internalized this bitterness, living a less than honorable lifestyle, and was content to lose himself to his studies. It was during a visit in Portland in the later, summer months of 2019 that he found a new focus in life. He adopted a new alias, Argive Hemlock, and headed northwards.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Capable of broken High Speech
  • Expert tree climber
  • Intelligent and stealthy hunter with excellent tracking/stalking skills
    • May be used to spy or collect information on others
  • Aggressive hunter

Description:

Wormwood is on the larger size as far as male fishers go. His face is triangular, with short, rounded ears and beady eyes. His coat is wiry with tri-colored hairs that give it a beautiful look that nearly cost him his life in his younger days. Though he may look small and all fluff, Wormwood is packed with muscle, and is a killing machine for all small vermin and porcupines alike. He is an opportunistic predator, however. He has killed a lynx, and has murdered a young, unshifted Luperci on orders of Argive.

Personality:

He is an arrogant creature; being extremely confident in his skills, be that in his fighting prowess, what he knows, or his deceitful ways. He is largely selfish and self-serving, and it may come off as a surprise that he has any form of loyalty to Argive. He is a sadistic creature, conniving, and highly intelligent. He is persistent when he wants something, and can get quite aggressive.

History:

Wormwood started life as a feral fisher, and had lived a normal life up until he had been caught by Luperci. He was transported from his original forest with the intention of eventually becoming a nice fur coat. He managed to escape when the caravan was attacked by bandits. New to the area, starving, and malnourished, he eventually became trapped in a snare. His attempts to free himself nearly became the death of him until a young Argive happened upon him. He felt pity for the fisher; so young, and so stubborn to not die. He freed Wormwood and fed him some food, only for the mustelid to continue lingering in the area. Argive eventually recaptured him after realizing Wormwood had been hurt from the snare pretty badly, and forced medicinal aide onto the fisher. It took time, but, eventually, Wormwood grew to trust Argive, and later became a secret companion of his.
He was strictly forbidden to be seen by Argive’s father, and was rarely allowed around the family home in order to ensure Wormwood wasn’t killed. During Argive’s time in Moss Reach, Wormwood acted as counsel for Argive, and he remained loyal enough to Argive to go with him when he left the pack.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Rider-trained
  • Fast with moderate endurance
  • Not spooked by violence
  • Can follow simple commands

Description:

---
  • Gear: For mounts; do they have special tack?

Personality:

Xanthos is not an easy horse, particularly so for any that are not familiar with him, or he with them. Overall though, he has a rather aloof personality. If you don’t bother him, he won’t bother you. He can be quite aggressive though, unafraid to bite or attack something—or someone—he doesn’t like. He’s picky about his riders, and will buck if mounted by someone he doesn’t know. Despite all of these, he can be a good horse to the right rider. He’s hardworking and tireless, stubborn to remain going if pushed to do so. He can be affectionate, though, it is rare.

History:

Xanthos was originally Argive’s Uncle Kleon’s horse. When Argive was forced to abandon Moss Reach, however, Kleon gave Xanthos to Argive. Thankfully, Argive had seen and worked with the stallion since his youth, and Xanthos’ otherwise troublesome quirks did not put the two at odds on the road. As Loners, Xanthos worked as the group’s main form of transportation and, at times, glorified pack mule.
